It's so crazy to me that Elemental is gonna make around $490m worldwide yet will lose around $80m in its box office run. It just shows how insane a 200m dollar budget is. I'm glad the movie made just about a half billion after such a bad opening though.
@spartan5285 Жыл бұрын
They spend waaayyy too much on movies nowadays. Needing 500 mill to break even on a non mcu property is just a terrible game plan. Not too long ago 100 mill was considered a huge budget.
@bobthegrinch Жыл бұрын
@@spartan5285 I don't even understand why they spend so much. I feel like since Avengers came out and had a big spectacle 30+ minute fight sequence (which I loved) almost every blockbuster has done the same and more often than not it's the least interesting part of the movie. They're spending sooooo much money on CGI and set pieces that aren't interesting. I get it with something like Avengers because they're big climaxes to movies long arcs, but the best action scenes in something like Shang Chi are the bus fight and the scaffolding fight. The dragon at the end and the big groups fighting just added time and expense on a final fight that could've been a great kung fu fight between the hero and villain. Fast and Furious could easily get away with some well crafted car chases that don't have an entire city being trashed and be more interesting. It seems like excess for the sake of it and it's ballooning the budgets and runtimes of these films. I don't know where they get the idea that everything needs to have an overlong overly bombastic finale.

The studios supposedly overplayed their hand and lowballed Taylor's team, thinking that they couldn't manage the production, financing, and distribution without them. So Swift's team, who, regardless of whether you like her music or not, have demonstrated themselves to be very capable, called the studios' bluff, self-produced the movie, and directly negotiated distribution with AMC for a 57% take (AMC gets the remaining 43%). Between this and the Scooter Braun thing, that's several hundreds of millions of dollars that the Swift team has deprived from rich snobs who thought they were the end-all-be-all. The general lesson here is: don't be a jerk and always negotiate in good faith. But the real lesson might be: don't mess with Taylor Swift.

My biggest summer shocker this year is Flash not making the summer top 10 domestic list. Insane. Also a massive shocker - Dead Reckoning dropping over $200M from Fallout, oppenheimer WW passing GOTG 3, Meg 2 passing Indy 5 and Flash There is no way I would have seen this coming back in April
@motherplayer Жыл бұрын
I would not have ever pegged Oppenheimer overtaking Fast X, frankly. Fast X is such an all-audiences friendly film in rating and content that I did not see it being overtaken by Oppenheimer, of all things. And I'm happy to see Guardians 3 had a strong finish, somewhat surprised for what happened with Indy 5 and impressed that Barbie seems to have really scratched an itch I didn't expect, with the Barbenheimer train and all that coming unexpectedly, and alas, seeing that Dead Reckoning Part 1 counts as one of the disappointments. But it at least seems it's lack of big success will mean this franchise for Cruise will certainly close once Part 2 comes out.
@CineScarborough Жыл бұрын
If it wasn't for the Ezra Miller controversy, it would have been more successful. I'm expecting James Gunn's DCU to change DC's fortunes considerably once Superman Legacy comes out.

Great analysis. Haven't seen "Haunted Mansion" yet, but it befuddles me that Disney released this in the summer...like why?!?!? This is a film that screams fall/Halloween season. Even if it wasn't a "hit" with a fall release, it probably could have better legs in the spooky season.

One thing that will work for M:I and Fast X is the fact that they are franchise movies and this will bring interest to the earlier movies as well. I remember back in the day that whenever a new Bond came out, all of the earlier ones would suddenly be shown on TV (here in Finland, where - admittedly - Bond is a very big deal), so the studio probably made plenty of money just based on those TV rights. I'm a bit iffy on the physical media on M:I and Fast X, because if I was interested in those, I would wait for the box set of the whole series instead of buying it now.

I was worried about the Rotten Tomatoes Decoded segment because that was one of my favorites (due to just how informative it is and how much more in depth it goes into about something not only not very well understood but also something that too many people go out of their way to obfuscate than just the usual "why are the critics so out of touch?"); glad to see it just found a new home instead (which, thinking on it, probably does suit it better, especially if you want to expand its scope). Anyway, fantastic content, as always; your depth, context, general lack of clickbait, and all around lack of apparent agenda (in any direction/on any side) other than to see the movie experience not only survive but thrive continues to impress me. It also makes me continue to wish more people were like you, especially online. Like would Barbie, which isn't playing in as many premium format screens actually have sold more tickets than Avatar 2 domestically, or would Disney films, which often skew towards discounted child tickets, actually serve a much bigger audience than the grosses alone show? I don't know if you can even get this data, but might interesting. Anyway, keep up the good work!
