The Pilea peperomioides, otherwise known as "Chinese Money Plant", "UFO Plant" and "Friendship Plant", was a bear to try to get here in the states for quite some time, but now the supply is up, the prices are lower, and I think that signals a good reason to do a care and propagation video (since probably more of us-at least in the states-have access to this plant).
This video was graciously brought to you by Espoma as well, and some of the products are featured below:
Products:
- Pilea peperomioides 4" plant: amzn.to/2DWy0KL
- Pilea peperomioides 2" plant: amzn.to/2P9ntNx
- Espoma potting mix: amzn.to/2O539Rd
- Espoma perlite: amzn.to/2PaLaVR
- Espoma biotone: amzn.to/2P6MWHj
- Espoma organic indoor plant food: amzn.to/2DZcZzk

I first came across this plant 30 years ago. A friend had a huge specimen in her window that was decades old. I felt in love with it straight away. Unlike any house plant I'd ever seen before. She harvested so many shoots for friends that in the end it gave up the ghost. It then took me many years to find another one because until recently they were rare in the UK too. We called it the Lollipop Plant because none of us knew what it was. Until one day I spotted it growing as shade ground cover in one of Royal Kew Gardens' glass houses. The RHS expert there identified it for me.

We call them elephant-ears in Sweden. And I like to put my small ”babies” that I’ve propagated, into small glasses of water for a couple of weeks for them to grow white roots and that way I feel like they have a higher chance of surviving 🌱

I came to this country 1981 and my mother in law had that plants in a house on north facing window sills in large room used for gatherings only...my husband joked and called that room ,a museum coz lots of nice stuffs accumulated... The room was much colder at winter seasons and the plants survived... The pilea peperomioides is also back to popularity here as well as other indoor plants sinced the homestyling/homestaging includes house plants ,to have more homy feeling etc.. Bring the nature inside...Now I know how to care properly my one year old "Chinese Money Plant" and it happens to be standing now infront of the table with my laptop so cannot resist to comment here. Now I know where the plant originally came from. We call it in Sweden "elephant ears" , thanks !

NB Please may I make one correction here: this plant adores water and never likest to dry out, ever. You can keep it happily growing by sitting it in 1"-2" (2-5cm) water constantly. Also, if you don't rotate it its leaves will be lovely and flat, not curled over like the ones shown here. And if the new leaves do go wrinkly, pinch those out and new ones will grow flat. I've had mine growing like crazy for over 20 years now.

Thank you so much for your deeply knowledgeable video. It's so useful to hear expert explanations and background. I just bought a pup from Etsy, then, found a bigger plant at Home Depot for much less! It had a pup already. Your video will help a lot to transfer the pup, that is healthy and has a lot of leaves already for 1 1/2-inches tall! There are too many plants called a "Chinese money plant/tree", eg. jade, Pachira aquatica, which I find confusing! So, I've also heard this Pilea is called - "Pancake plant," which is what I'm going to call it because it's so sweet!!
