Rodney, I’ve watched dozens of your excellent “how to play” videos and I hope it’s ok to ask this question. Your delivery is so fluent and natural sounding that you don’t appear to be reading from a script, or even referring to notes, and yet you manage to cover every aspect of the game rules in a perfectly methodical and efficient way without any obvious editing and without ever having to backtrack or leaving even the smallest detail out. There’s never any pauses while you’re trying to recall some detail, or untimely waffling, or “Oh sorry I forgot this” or “I’ll come back to that later”. How do you manage to remember everything and get your performance down with such perfect accuracy each time? Does it require several takes, or do you just have a superhuman memory and flawless natural ability to articulate everything? Or to put it more simply, what’s the secret behind the production of your videos? :)
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын

Great work! This game has been on my List for YEARS but it was always hard to find (and/or costly). I play the app version often. I have to say, I’m a little surprised they didn’t split the cards so that the player on the other side could read them clearly. A big downside to the strategy is not paying attention to your opponents cards and it’s a little weird to keep having to ask or to grab it and read it, then forgetting where you grabbed it from, ha! Tarot sized cards could accomplish this though it would greatly increase the cost. But man, that would look impressive.
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
Probably the logistics of the board size would be an issue too. A card might be facing you, but at tarot size, it would be so far away, you still might not be able to read it :) If you pick a copy up I hope you have a great time playing!

Hello Rodney!! All of your videos are top quality and now because of you and your amazing explanation Summoner Wars is now my all-time favourite board game. I have a really specific question and anyone is welcome to comment if it is within their knowledge: Tacullu of the Breakers faction uses her ability to mind control enemy units and turns them to her side instead of the opponent discarding them . Let's say that the opponent now kills the mind controlled unit. Will this unit be discarded to my discard pile since it's now mine or to the opponent's. This information is vital because it adds a huge advantage against factions like the Vanguards or the Fallen Kingdom which can return discarded units.Thank you!
@WatchItPlayed Жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed the video and have been enjoying the game! I think I can help. In the rules it says this: DISCARD: To discard a card, place it face down on top of its OWNER'S discard pile. When a card is discarded from the battlefield, any cards under it are discarded and any tokens on it are removed. If a discarded card is later placed back on the battlefield, it is considered a new card. OWNER: A player is the owner of a card if they started the game with that card in their deck. So, the definition of these two game terms would suggest that discarded cards go to their owner's discard pile, and the owner is the player who began with the card in their deck. Which means if a "controlled" card is discarded, it goes to the owner's discard pile (not the controllers). Hope that helps!

Rodney is the Master of the video tutorial. Should he die suddenly (God forbid), say via a future flu pandemic, a stray landmine incident, or falling from a ladder while rescuing a kitten, then to learn board game rules will require careful watching of a minimum of 5 alternative videos and filtering out all the inaccuracies until you have the complete rules. So it comes with 6 premade decks, but I see there is deck building as well. Does it come with extra cards or do you deconstruct the other decks?
@chardris773 жыл бұрын
Neither. Each Summoner has 2 deckbuilding symbols. There are 12 symbols total. Each of these 6 has symbols no one else has, so their cards can only go with them. Later summoners will have cards of symbols that are already in use. Ie, a summoner now has symbols A and B. A later summoner might have symbols A and C. The A cards from either can be used in either.
@GaNSiNaTeR3 жыл бұрын
@@chardris77 I believe each Summoner has 3 symbols rather than 2. And some common cards have 2 symbols on them, but you only need one of the symbols to be the same as ANY one of your summoner symbols to be able to be a part of their deck. At least that's what it has seemed like reading all the previews on Plaid Hats website in the News section the past month or two.
@chardris773 жыл бұрын
@@GaNSiNaTeR True. Each summoner has the basic symbol, plus their unique mix of 2 of the deckbuilding symbols. The basic one is what allows for mercenaries. As long as a card you want to add gas at least one in common with the summoner, it’s good to go.
@GaNSiNaTeR3 жыл бұрын
@@chardris77 ah, I did not realize it was the basic symbol! How did I miss that! Haha. I've never been that big on deck building, especially when the premade decks are pretty well put together, but if they end up putting some mercenary/ reinforcement packs out there I may end up having to buy into them this time around, it helps to start collecting around when the games launch rather than later on like I did with first edition!
@chardris773 жыл бұрын
@@GaNSiNaTeR Definitely! There is also less of a need for deckbuilding this go round, and there won’t be any dedicated reinforcement packs. Just entirely new decks with some pieces to swap around. They’ve already said that tournaments will be twofold. One bracket with standard decks, one with deckbuilding, so there’s no need to mess with tour deck even if you want to get competitive.

Is there any pdf that I can print and cut the cards out to play? I would really like to pay the creators for their awesome work but you know, my country's economy is not at its best right now (I am pretty unsure if the situation ever got worse but pretty sure will get worse and worse day by day) and a board game which is not produced locally (no modern game does) comes with 40€+20€shipping and thats 1/3 of minimum wage here😔 I am still desperately trying to finish my hanmade copy of catan after 4+ hours of work

I'm not aware of a print and play version.

Which edition of Summoner Wars do you like better: 1st or 2nd, and why (like artwork, etc.)?
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
@danielschaublin3 жыл бұрын
@@WatchItPlayed So, in summary, you tend to stay away from sharing your personal opinions on things on the internet, and keep it to yourself in secret, then? (I did notice you mentioning that a few times on videos that you posted on twitter about that in the past, despite a lot of people asking that all the time.)
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
@@danielschaublin I do occasionally share opinions on games, but generally at times of my choosing - not by request (I get quite a few requests, so it would become quite challenging to be regularly explaining what I like and why I like it). I do try to answer all other questions and comments on my videos, and that tends to keep me busy enough :)

Rodney always says that he wouldn't bother doing a Watch It Played of a game he didn't like so you can read into that what you will :)
@danielschaublin3 жыл бұрын
@@Veaseify I guess I'll take it as if a videos of a game goes up on the Watch It Played Channel, then it's most likely one he likes. Otherwise, then don't ask about it games that don't have videos on the channel. I think he wants to keep his personal thoughts on games, and personal life, private in those cases as much as possible.

I see shades of Ashes here...which I think Rodney still prefers ?! 🤣
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
They both have cards, and involve destroying an opponents hero, but otherwise, I find they play quite differently.
@billl76463 жыл бұрын
@@WatchItPlayed But you would still prefer.......
@WatchItPlayed3 жыл бұрын
@@billl7646 I don't really think of games in those terms. It's situational. There are situations where I'd prefer Ashes, and situations where I'd prefer Summoner Wars. Know what I mean? But I do adore Ashes, that's for sure.

so... this is basically chess with dice and special abilities? I'm really curious to see how it plays

That’s the elevator pitch, definitely, and it knocks it out of the park.

@razzendahcuben3 жыл бұрын
No, as a chess player, it's not much like chess. Chess is deterministic and uses alternating activations for the action system. This is highly random and uses a phase-based turn system. SW is more like a spatially-aware MTG.
