Konnichiwa and thanks for watching SUMO PRIME TIME. I'm Hiro Morita. This latest installment will take you to Miyagino beya which is run by former yokozuna grand champion Hakuho. The new Miyagino oyakata reveals his thoughts on becoming a stablemaster by sharing some of the challenges he's facing as he currently coaches 19 young men who're vying to become the next Hakuho. The former yokozuna also gave me man-to-man instructions on a basic sumo training. I mean what an amazing and awesome experience it was learning firsthand from the 45-time champ!! I'm sure all of you who're trying out sumo wherever you may be will find his teachings profound and enlightening. The king of the ring also offers his message to our worldwide sumo fans, so please check out the show and find the secrets of Hakuho's success. Arigato always!!

Hey NHK - Either offer complete coverage of the Basho (at least top two divisions) on demand so those of us in the western hemisphere can watch all matches the following day, or stop copyright striking the channels that allow us to watch this amazing sport. We all wish we could buy a subscription that would allow us to get all matches direct from you, but it’s not available. Just so you know, I speak for THOUSANDS of sumo fans.

I think the contrast between Hakuho inside the dohyo, and outside (even before he retired) is remarkable. Inside the dohyo he was always fierce and daunting, exuding so much confidence it almost could pass for an air of arrogance were he not actually so superior. Truly a warrior, embodying the fighting spirit. Outside the ring he's different; he seems humble (more than one would expect for his achievements) and always looking to improve himself as if he never reached his ideals, he seems kind and patient, and very grateful for his incredible journey in sumo. He does seem more relaxed now as retired from competitive Sumo, which is great to see. I feel like his retirement as a rikishi was only the beginning of something else maybe even bigger, I can't wait to see what he intends to give back to the sport he so loves. I'm very excited and happy seeing him on Sumo Prime Time, and that he wants to share Sumo with the world!

Benjamin Kraft Thank you for writing such a wonderful essay about Hakuho. I enjoyed reading it so much that I wish it was longer. I could not have done any better myself and I've been an essayist for over 50 years. So many of us sumo fans came to this amazing tradition because of first being exposed to Hakuho in some way. Beyond his obvious athleticism and dedication to sumo, his intelligence and sincere charm make him, I think, incredibly attractive. It was in a 2015 interview with an American martial artist where my man and I first saw Hakuho and, like most people, we were instantly addicted. So, thanks again for commenting and sharing your appreciation of The Greatest of All Time. Your new fan, Jo-Anna

His insights for proper teppo technique were fascinating. Making Hiro focus on sliding his lead foot forced him to plant his rear foot on the ground, a fundamental part of generating power in any striking based combat sport. Really awesome to learn.

Why a champ this guy is! Even as former yokozuna, he still exudes an aura of greatness whenever you see him. Seeing that teppo training being applied against one of the toughest fighters like that is quite satisfying! Really cool that they included that clip in the video! On a side note, did anyone see Ishiura in any part of the video? I'm hoping he's recovered and is back in training... He's one of my favorites in the top ranks and it sucks to see him fall down in ranks

Hello from Canada, thanks for these videos and sharing official sumo content with the internet! I started watching sumo a little over 3 years ago, when Hakuho was still dominant. I feel privileged to have discovered sumo just in time to witness the end of his reign, and will watch his students with great interest moving forward!
@LauraJdogmom2 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you for this. Hakuho is the GOAT! He also seems to be a good teacher, which will certainly contribute to his success going forward. His rikishi are devoted to him, and rightly so. I just hope the NSK realizes what a treasure they have in him. I loved the teppo lesson. The basic sumo exercises look so simple, but that is deceptive. It is easy to do them wrong, isn't it? I love it that Hakuho wants to promote sumo internationally, and that he wants tourists to enjoy sumo. It would help immensely if it were easier to get tickets to sumo events and to make arrangements to visit stables. I wonder if the NSK has considered making a centralized tourist information hub? I know of a few people who would like to attend Hakuho's danpatsu-shiki, but are not sure if they will be able to get tickets. Did he mention how Ishiura is doing?
@Ric_Vicious2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not! I've been wondering, myself, what's happened to Ishiura. I guess the neck injury was more serious than originally thought.

It cannot be states just how good Hakuho was. Yokozuna at 22. 45 championships! The second most yushos won was by Taihō at 32. Hakuho ended his career with a zensho yusho of 15 - 0! Imagine how hard it is for one rikishi of hundreds to climb the bonzuke to the top ranks. Then win enough times while staying healthy to become ozeki, then win consistently to become Yokozuna. Then continuously beat all other top ranked rikishi to win yusho after yusho. Now think of all our top contenders; Teru is injured, Shodai is kadoban, no current ozeki are on the track to yozokuna. Hakuho is truly the GOAT of sumo, and no one else comes close. He is a once-in-a-lifetime Yokozuna, let alone rikishi.
