I opted to use our backhoe to get my nephew out of a similar mess. I had to stick walk it down 75 feet of a nearly 45 degree hill, then stick walk it back up pulling the car along as I was able, until I was finally on enough flat road that I could pull him with the drive tires. That stretch of road was bare gummy clay, like what you were on. 36 degrees and falling, misty rain. By the time I got home you could have stripped enough clay off of my coveralls to make a pallet of bricks, and I never did get all the clay off of the towing straps that I had to tie together in order to reach him. I didn't even try to take them apart. How he got that little Pontiac that far down that stretch of road is beyond my imagination. It took a hot shower and 4 hours under the electric blanket before I felt warm again.

That older truck is the perfet recovery truck to put in places like this. Don't chance tearing up your newer/road trucks in this kind of enviroment. That Base model Holmes 600 was a winching truck-if you set it up right . I operated one for five years on a long wheelbase Loiusville Ford--and it did everyuthing needed to be done. Maybe down the road--when it is replacement time--find a nwer truck with the right engine/tranny--swap this body over to the newer truck. Just an idea.

Gravel or crushed rock wouldn't do anytime. I'd get washed out and just mixed in. It'd need to be dug out and a proper base put in as well as sufficient drainage. Those who love in the country know. When it rains it pours and those roads just wash out. It would be a never ending project of laying stone or a huge big time prior to dig it out and put a base in and proper drainage.

sometimes it involves trade-offs. you pull me one day, I pull you out on another ... at least that's how it used to be around here. The 'old heads' never kept score or competed with each other, and often had no qualms with helping to teach a new one (if that new one was willing to be taught, that is). When it involved a "big mess," you often would have thought they were all working for the same guy ... well, they were, in a way, when the State Patrol called them all.

@infoanorexic3 жыл бұрын
@@richardhaag3959 same here, collectively about 12 years worth, but many moons ago and all before cell phones. The district I did the most for eventually added cell phones to the communications mix for a variety of reasons. I have to assume that some small districts did the same in lieu of maintaining radios. Anyway, school bus drivers are under the same requirements regulating truck and commercial bus drivers. If the phone has to be used in route, it has to be "hands free" or while parked. Being parked isn't going to work everywhere along the route, as you know. Of course, the driver has to know when they should ignore the phone as well as a radio, but that can't go on for the entire route either. Otherwise, panic ensues and they assume you've been kidnapped by aliens or swallowed by a sink hole. It's the same mess we dealt with, just with more or different ingredients involved. In spite of the hassles, I still miss it at times. Especially when one of my (now grown, with kids of his own) riders told me, quite openly "Thank You, for giving a damn about us."

That slushy road surface is a real joke. Good for skating though.How come they put that down and think it is satisfactory?
@SumterWrecker3 жыл бұрын
Mr Nick That is mostly the type dirt in that area and when it gets wet it is a skating ring. That bus in my opinion should not be on that road. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe

Rule number 1 of driving a tow truck, truck Does Not Leave the Hard Ball. I know from personal experience and gettiing my ass chewed. 2nd thing is a major bath for all the muddy equipment. In all due respect, I guess you guys don't take Pride in your trucks, from what I have seen. Trucks need to be painted and look nice, and yes nice trucks also work, come out to California and we will prove it.

Mr Richard Actually one of our trucks came from Tow Industry in California. There are nice wreckers there. Wrecker and Skid steer got a bath when they got back. Not sure about other tow truck. This company has been in business since the 60's so they must be doing something right. Thanks for commenting. Stay safe

Gotta go through the work of cleaning equipment and rewinding cable at the shop. I like to see the older iron still being used. May not be as fast, but it still has jobs that can be done. Like asking retired people to work and share their knowledge. That truck could have been retired, but it is on the job. A+

Mr Drew I love listening to older wrecker drivers. Some of the things they did with older equipment was amazing. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stsy safe
