A friend of mine had a gong, not too different from this one, but with a machined edge and I found that I could, with a semi stiffly padded mallet, tap gently but quickly in a fast rhythm, on an edge and start a cascade effect that culminated in a shriek that I was afraid might actually hurt the gong. I wonder if metal fatigue is a possibility in such a gong? I will say this about the Musician playing these gongs, he has done things I never would have thought of. Brilliant!!!

Playing the rim of the gong is a well practiced technique Fred so as long as you don't play the gong too hard should be fine. The shriek as you mention, is what we probably call a Tsunami and is a natural reponse to continued playing, and again can be realised through repetitive strokes as opposed to hard playing.
