Excellent series, I gained a great deal from these well informed discussions. I have seen a KZbin lecture by the British historian William Dalrymple which indicate British thinking on strengthening Brish grip on India while making a show of religious responsibility to take democracy to backward countries and at times controlling rapacious acts by British East India Company.
Appreciate if you could give the names of Sinhalese people who helped the British to march to Kandy and then to capture the King, in addition to Ehelepola.
I believe many signed in Tamil because the King was of Tamil origin, a "Wadiga" King. It's like many Sri Lankans sign in English at present. Please refer the following link for more information. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandyan_Convention From NSW, Australia
They wanted to abolish the king's powers coz British got their own Queen as well. They weren't ready to accept the power of another king. It's easy to control after removing the king. The king was arrested not surrendered.
