Correct me if I'm wrong. I have some kind of memories of explaining the Tamil script signatures of the infamous Kandyan Convention weren't actually Tamil, but a sort of calligraphic and creative representation of the official "signature" of the Kandyan nobility by combining Tamil scripts, Sinhala scripts and artistic imagination to create an individual official "stamp" to officially represent each Kandyan nobility. From memory, it was Dharmasiri Kaariyawasam who explained that in his earlier videos in his youtube channel "Kaarige Channel Eka" in the video series about the 1815 Kandyan convention. Kaari quoted Senarath Paranawithana's literature as a source of explaining those signatures using the offical calligraphic writing system of "Granthi" or "Granthye" which was neither Tamil nor Sinhalese but a creative style of mixed scripts and styles. I do understand Professor Raj Somadeva couldn't possibly know all the history with all the details, but I would've thought he would've come across that explanation about the claimed "Tamil signatures" of the Kandyan nobility when they signed the Kandyan convention. Kandyan convention document is a dubious and beguiling document. I seriously doubt the actual original document has even survived to the modern day. The document that accidentally found in the national archives few decades ago and the document that apparently exists in London archives are likely counterfeit documents that were created later by British colonials. The one that is claimed to exist in London archives is no doubt a "photocopy" produced by a document duplicating specialist for the British colonials during colonial era. However, it is entirely possible to do a forensic examination of the one in Sri Lanka to ascertain whether it is the original document, but I would say such scientific examination is only likely to conclude that it was from that era. The original document was of no importance to British colonials, nor it was to the Kandyan nobility who stupidly and foolishly betrayed their own king and kingdom.

Wonderful program with educational value. Why this was signed in tamil is my question as well but today I understood the reason. By the way; I believe this is the best program in this nature. The magnificent conduct by eminent journalist Nuwan Liyanage should be greatly appreciated. His knowledge about history seems to be very high, maybe working with a great intellectual in the calibre of Prof Raj Somadeva.... 😁😁 Fantastic..please keep it up...

Yes, Kaariyawaam has done a lengthy research into the infamous Kandyan convention. It would be good if we can see a critique of Kaariyawasam's version of the events of the Kandyan convention by Raj Somadeva.

@@lionelfernandopulle3713 I would say both terms were interchangeable back then. Basically, the word "signature" would've come out of the word "sign" or may be even the other way around.
Sir, there is a recent publication which describes these signatures belongs one person. Publication used Forensic studies on signatures comparing with Saparagamu ancient documents and mismatch dates on singatures in 'Udarata Givisuma'/ Kandyan Convention with Jonh D'Oyly's description details on his diary. What is your thought about this?

These Nayak rulers were Telegu though, not Tamil but were from Madras. The signed convention was shown as a possible fake by the members of the archives department around 2010. So might also explain why in Tamil as British favored the use of South Indians with them.

Nayakas come to the Tamilnadu „ Viyanakar Empire Period „ They Telungu speaking community like military Commanders and small, small places. I things after 13 or 14 centuries. They are names Palayakarar (பளையக்கார ). Hence, they are studied Tamil . Mixed with Tamil people. For an example Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr M. Stalin he is also Telungu Generation M.G.Ramachadran Malayalam, Jayalitha Karnadaka. This the Cinema and Political history, in Sri Lanka D.S.Senayaka, Dudly Senanayake S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, and Rajahpaksa families all are Telungu mixed families. This is the reason aborigines in South India and Sri Lanka in Pavement

@@disnasriyanthaNo, Tamils also use appatchi in village area. I have experience in Tamil nadu village. Note that, Malayalam is not separate language in few decades ago . Malayalam is a one of the variation of Tamil . Now a day Southern Tamil nadu people easily understand Malayalam. Malayalees also easily understand Tamil. Travancore kingdom was not Malayalam or Tamil kingdom because most of people in that kingdom were widely spoke Tamil more than Malayalam. Even Kerala royal families also claimed that they are belonging to pandyan kingdom.

Appan & Appa are Tamil words. Meaning : Father. Appachi is not Tamil. But Appa must be the root word for Appachi !
Now professor is simplifying the Tamil signature matter and the elite group had a privilege to do so. Then why the majority people are calling “DEMALA” and my personal opinion is to downgrade the language. Henceforth why do not our Sri Lankans would not like to call as THAMIL instead of DEMALA. I kindly request all the scholars ,government officials, politicians and general public as THAMIL community.
