Suni Lee has kept the American streak alive. Coming into these Games, an American woman has won the women's gymnastics all-around title in each of the last five Olympic Games.
She totaled 57.433 for gold, holding off Brazil's Rebeca Andrade (57.298) and ROC's Angelina Melnikova (57.199). Lee joins U.S. greats Mary Lou Retton (1984), Carly Patterson (2004), Nastia Liukin (2008), Gabby Douglas (2012) and Simone Biles (2016) as the only U.S. women to win the all-around title at the Olympic Games. Lee is the first Hmong American gymnast.
Andrade's medal is the first for a South American woman in the women's all-around final. Prior to Thursday, the best finish by a Brazilian woman was Jade Barbosa's 10th place finish in 2008. _____________________________________________________

Especially considering how impacted her career has been by three ACL injuries. Perhaps that taught her tough lessons about acceptance and gratitude, which has given her her wonderful positive demeanour. She is amazing to watch, with an innate ability that is both elegant and powerful. I think if her career hadn’t been so tainted by injury then she is talented enough that she would have reached legendary status, like Simone. There is still time, at age 22. I hope her knee holds out and we see more of her.

Because here we have VERY few athletes that are on the elite level, because it’s a country that still supports very few sports. So this not only about the medals. Being an Olympic finalist was already HUGE, so winning 2 medals is way better that we anticipated! Maybe you should google for more info 😘

It's refreshing to see a silver medalist be happy about getting silver instead of pouting about not getting the gold. Even by combining their best scores Suni would still win by a very narrow margin (0.035), Suni also gave away around 0.4 on beam. In the end it all worked out because now all 3 medalists are Olympic champions
@james2175

For anyone who thinks Rebeca Andrade lost the gold medal: you're wrong. She EARNED the silver medal. She gave it all and this was her best performance. It was good enough for silver and there's nothing bad about it! This was the first medal a female Brazilian gymnast earned at the Olympics, and days later she won gold anyway. Just celebrate what she did here instead of criticizing her performance.

A little factual detail they got wrong, at 9:02 minute mark, from the man commentator: Suni's parents were not from Vietnam. They're from Laos.... although it's also due to the Vietnam War (Laos is the Secret War part of the Vietnam War; Laos also was the most heavily bombed country in the world, not Vietnam, although 99% of people think of the Vietnam War took place only in Vietnam.) The German girl, Kim Bui's mother was from Vietnam; but her father's also from Laos. Tragically, these are children descended from people the Vietnamese communists and Lao communists had driven out of Vietnam and Laos, respectively, after the Vietnam War, so those two countries have been rather mum about Bui and Lee...

She was really happy with the silver, but I still feel bad for Rebeca Andrade for missing out on the gold because of ending outside the lines in her floor routine. She was so good and enthusiastic throughout this final.

She missed out on the gold because the judges wanted an amercian to win, these are facts. She was immensely robbed in UB and BB, she should've won regardless of her OOBs
@stephanieanneg.gimongala723

@@felipebarros1572 No. She missed out on gold because she has the mistakes and don't have the control on her landings. She didn't even got the desired D Score on beam. Come on, as much as the other gymnasts need to work on their execution, others need to also work on their difficulty and control. You are saying she was immensely robbed in UB and BB and you are so into US gymnasts when it is not a US gymnast who won those events. Derwael and the Chinese gymnast 100% deserve those medals. She isn't the only one who excelled and worked hard for it.
@SamanthaD89
@SamanthaD89 2 жыл бұрын
@@felipebarros1572 that’s bullshit. It’s obvious the judges don’t care what country the winner is from. Suni puts up a huge score on bars which helped her win.
@felipebarros1572
@felipebarros1572 2 жыл бұрын
@@SamanthaD89 now what you say is bullshit. Andrade put up a huge score in VT, exactly the same as Suni on UB. Andrade should get an additional .3 on UB and BB each in E-score. If you know anything about gymnastics scoring you know that's true. If you want to harshly score Rebeca, you also would have to harshly score Suni, which would still give Andrade the gold she earned. In this situation, where the judges were harsh just on Andrade, it stops being fair. But of course, the judges wouldn't let a Brazilian, Ms. ACL, who lost literally the entire quad due to injuries, come and win the most important medal in the most important event of the most important competition (OG AA Gold), even if the gymnast earned it (this case).
@felipebarros1572
@felipebarros1572 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephanieanneg.gimongala723 your logic doesn't exist. Please, it doesn't even make any sense. If the judges robbed Andrade of an AA MEDAL, what does that have to do with the UB and BB medals? But of course, the judges wouldn't let a Brazilian, Ms. ACL, who lost literally the entire quad due to injuries, come and win the most important medal in the most important event of the most important competition (OG AA Gold), even if the gymnast earned it (this case).

@N L Listunova was only 16 years old, yet gave a strong performance in all the events she participated in team final. She scored the highest on floor, beam and bars among her teammates, and kept her cool in beam and floor even after Melka and Vlada fell. She 100% deserves the praise she got. Valentina should have also praised the other 4 too, but again, if she was fair, Russian gymnastics would be something entirely different.

I’m hopeful that someday when they are old and in charge of the governing bodies, REAL change happens in the sport. Because at this point, I sometimes feel as if I wish my favorite sport never existed. It has done so much harm to even low levels like myself and queen Rachel Denhollander. *sigh* so many CoMpliCayTed feelings!
