Sunlight Basin - Volcano 9-25-2021

Wyoming Jeepers head northwest of Cody, Wyoming to Sunlight Basin in the beautiful Absaroka Mountains. Here they Jeep to the ghost town of Lee City and Winoma Camp along Sulphur Creek. They see grizzly bear sign, a moose, cross a number of streams and end up driving up the edge of a 50 million-year-old volcano. Drone scenery of volcanic dikes top off this visit to the volcano, which is located near Yellowstone National Park.

Hello, Mike! Thanks for joining us for the ride. Yes, there are times I experience fear on the road. Check out the show On the Edge - Pryor Mountains to see what happens when the ladies can't keep the guys in line regarding which roads we are traveling on. Later that day, I literally threw myself out of our Jeep when I thought we were going to back off a cliff when we were turning around in a hairy spot (not caught on film). We haven't gotten in such tight fixes since then, but the result of my immediate exit is that Elgin now believes me when I say, "I'm getting out!" HAHA

This is one of the scariest and best roads we have taken. Montana's Cooke City road was the most beautiful but this is a close second. Thanks for watching us nearly kill ourselves on those hair-raising roads! Hahaha. We appreciate the comment.

I just found this video. Pretty fun! At about 25 minutes, when you guys were stuck, there were some ATV tracks in the snow...I think those were mine from the day before! I went back and looked at my Onx Offroad, and sure enough, that's the day after I was up there. I made it a ways further on my Sportsman 1000XP but eventually got stopped by snow.

Always a treat getting to watch your adventures! An incredibly beautiful part of the Basin I've never seen, my thanks again to Elgin for the location tips. Just back from 10 days in southeast Oregon and northern Nevada - remote, beautiful high desert country. The Alvord Desert region was my favorite, but gas was a bear at $7/gal. lol

Elgin, just curious does your drone not return home when the battery is low? Great videos and love your drone shots. Found your channel from Myron’s channel. I watch his channel because I love earth history and geology.

Great question... Yes, it is does come home by default when the battery is low. However, a lot of the droning I do is actually following a vehicle so "home" might be two miles back from where I am at the time that battery is low. So "home" is actually farther for the drone to go and it would be going away from me. So I use the app to see where the drone is in relation to me and bring it to me rather than home. In the case of the show you watched, the battery calibration was off and it actually landed with 15% still showing on the screen. So, it went down and I could only control the direction it went down. This was good enough to get it away from the river though! Glad you loved the video... There are about 20 more you can sift through on our channel if you feel like it and we have more coming out this winter. Thanks for watching and commenting. I just found your channel, you guys are fantastic. I love the Bighorns/Pryors and Beartooths, I spend a lot of time there but it is never enough.. My jeep isn't equipped for the extreme terrain that you guys travel on but now I can see which roads I shouldn't attempt through your videos. (since most of the time I am travelling by myself with no winch) Awesome job!!

@@loristravels For the Pryor's, we will most likely head north out of Cowley, go up the western flank (road 23085 along Crooked Creek), go across the top (road 2849) and visit the ice cave, and come down the eastern flank by Layout Creek. It will be an all day trip. The next regular video we put out will on on the Pryors and will be the exact trip I am referring to. The video should be out in a week or so. The other trip will the the same trail as the Cooke City video we put out called "One Hail of a Day". Basically, head up to Goose Lake on road 3230.

We were coming out of Yellowstone last year and took the Beartooth pass instead. Was looking that direction wondering what was over that way. Spectacular. Next year we will probably investigate this! Thanks.

Our videos, "Clarks Fork to Ivy Lake" and "The Morrison Jeep Trail" (not the turn by turn one) also show the area you were looking at near the Beartooth Pass. They may be worth looking at. If your not the type to drive the switchbacks, you still can come in from the top on the Bearthooth Highway and see some outstanding scenery or just come in from Clark to see the canyon. I personally think the Morrison Jeep Trail video has almost unbeatable scenery. :-) Before too long, there is a video coming out that was recorded near Cooke City, MT that will be very close though!

We have a couple of videos filmed in the Cooke City, MT area, coming out this fall and winter. You may have a few more places you want to explore. We found some great scenery - the best I've ever seen (minus the fall colors in New Hampshire, of course).

We have been all over the Northwest and Sierras, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Florida, New England, Ozarks, Canada north of the Great Lakes, Hawaii, Utah, Nevada. Our favorite are the Rocky Mountains hands down. Want to get into the Beartooth in the Montana side. Wilderness camping is the best. Been to Yellowstone twice but prefer the Teton National Wilderness area north of Dubois and south into the Wind River Range. We go up to the U.P. a lot because it the next best thing and close to us and good fishing. And now the areas in the basin near you and toward the Beartooth Range. Remote and rugged. Freedom. A campfire and the night stars is all we need!! Family has us bound here in the Midwest but sometimes we escape for a month or two!!

The Copper Harbor are is nice to plus Northern Wisconsin. Porcupine Mt. Area is nice too. We take our grandkids up there to fish and the Lake Superior beach at Blind Sucker Flowage. Then hunt for Yooper Lites at night with UV lights.

Yes, we take a lot of trips where we just enjoy the ride looking for new places to film, grabbing short clips for fans. I try to post daily on social media. We have a great video coming up and two more recorded, so there are more coming. We spend about 40-50 hours editing per video after they are recorded. :-)

We don’t run into too many people on the back roads and when we do, we often stop to chat. Although, I will tell you that when we were in the Morrison Jeep Trail we had an ATV pass both our Jeeps on the same corner!!! That was exciting!

Well we went ahead and did Sulfur Creek and Galena Pass. I regret to tell you that the road onto the gravel slump above the Wynoma mine has slid away. The road is now about three feet wide just as you start onto the slide. Also Galena Pass is slid away as it has been for some time. Lots of water has gone down Sulfur Creek. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the update. Too bad they don't blade the rock slides. It would be really nice to get to the end of the Galena Pass road. We actually didn't make it to the end of either one. Those rock slides are just like moving glaciers. :-) Glad you were able to get up there though!

We have the volume set to be the same as other videos on KZbin. Sometimes you can't hear someone in our show because they are too far away or facing away from the camera when they are speaking. We raise the volume on these to the max, but it isn't always enough. We leave the clips like that when we think they are still worth the content. There are two spots in this video where you can't hear someone's speech well. Sorry about that. We do the best we can without professional equipment. Wind also throws a wrench in our audio at times. Thanks for watching and wanting to hear every word we say. 🙂

If the boys went on their own, they wouldn't know when to stop, and they might have a Jeep slide right off the edge. We took our four-wheelers up there the year before and discovered that the rocks roll, and the more you fight it, the more they roll. Dang! We were lucky not to lose a rig over the edge. Plus, if the boys went on their own, no one would get to see what they did because we ladies provide all the videos for our viewers. 🙂 Thanks for watching and commenting.
