I’ve been in the Bighorn Cave. It’s about a 70’ drop from the top on a rope. The cave system itself is very expansive and basically on a horizontal plain once you’re down and extends for thousands of feet. It’s very hard climbing back out on ropes though so be prepared for having the correct equipment. We used rope ascenders.

I'm heading to WY the first half of June. Is that too early? Will the high mountain passes still be closed? What's the best way to get info on closures?
@wyomingjeepers6 күн бұрын
The first of June is fine in the mountains for the lower roads. The higher ones like the trips we took in Cooke City are the middle of June. Sunlight Basin is the middle of July. The Pryors (this video) is the middle of June. The best way to find out is go to the Forest Service and search for MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Maps) for the area you are looking for. The GAIA Overland layer in GAIA GPS will tell you open dates as well. However, the best option is the Forrest Service MVUM. The book we are putting out shortly of all of our trails we put on KZbin will have open dates as well.

The first 100 yards or so doesn't require a key or permit. To go beyond does require a key (probably a permit) as the cave is very large and would require experience to be safe. The BLM controls this so I would check with them regarding permits and the key.

@@melissacook Melissa,I’m sure that it hurt, but Elgin is a Master in using the Drone and its wonderful to see where you guys are going on your trips, but its also useful to check ahead to see if the road is clear. I’m watching a series on a guy who looks at the old Indian Dwellings in the cliffs (mostly in Utah) and he uses his drone to go up close for a look, these dwellings are on very steep cliffs and are pretty difficult to get to. So the Drone’s are especially useful for videos like yours. I’m glad you got a new one.
@melissacook24 күн бұрын
@@bigviper64 Thank you. Yes, I agree. Elgin is a master at that drone. Although... He has wrecked many times and it has been replaced not once (this trip) but twice. They left from the NY/Vermont border, drove to Alaska, were gone for about a month, stayed in hotels, and drove a Tacoma. They didn't go all out but enjoyed a few excursions along the way. $13,000. So, if we go, we may have to fly, rent a Jeep and stay two days. Haha! No, really, I'd love to go to Alaska and film a show. It is something we've discussed. Thanks for watching. Years ago before I did this trail I read that the turn outs at each switchback was so you could pull straight in and then back up to the next switchback. I could not conceive of backing up this trail with hopes that you do not get to close to the edge. Can you imagine how difficult it was to haul freight up to the ranch using a wagon and mules?
@wyomingjeepers3 ай бұрын
I would not want to be backing up too much on this trail. I did have to back up some to let a four wheeler go by and that was all I needed. I would rather just make multi point turns. All and all it wasn't too bad but you do need to focus on the trail as mistakes can be costly. Turn 16 is the one that can get folks in trouble. I saw a guy in a rig try to pile rocks to build up the shelf. The rocks gave away and he almost lost it. Going straight up it is really the only safe way. The old timers with the wagons and all were a tough lot. I do think the trail has deteriorated over the years because I know some used to take a tractor up there and it would not be possible now... Especially on number 16.
@melissacook3 ай бұрын
Before we drove the trail, we droned it from across the valley. Then we drove to the top on opening day and filmed the first person to drive it in 2021. RORA was taking a group over the trail that day. What a fun group. I can't image taking anyone on the trail. I would be afraid someone would freak out and drive off by mistake. Fear does crazy things to some people. I met a lady in an assisted living who watched this show with me on their TV. She could hardly sit still she was so excited to where SHE had ridden horses up and down the trail as part of her job when she was young.
