If you like stoner rock, doom metal, grunge, sludge, or drone, you definitely know the famous Sunn Beta Lead. There's so much hype around this amp. Buzz Osborne from Melvins uses this amp. Rumors say that Kurt Cobain used to gig with a Sunn Beta Lead during the Bleach era. The sound of Red Fang is pretty much based on this amp since they use it for guitars and bass. The list of bands that use the Sunn Beta Lead is long and includes Sandrider, Melt Banana, and Pissed Jeans. It is not a cheap amp anymore since is not very easy to find, especially outside the US. The amp in the video is from 1979 and is a US model with all original parts.
#sunnbetalead #sunn #weasacompany
The amp is not easy to find, you have to check Reverb every once in a while. However, there are some alternatives.
Hilbish Design offer a Sunn Beta Lead replica, this is what Buzz Osborne uses today - bit.ly/3aS942t
Monolith used to offer a Sinn Beta Lead replica called Magam. Every once in a while they appear in the used market on Reverb - bit.ly/35j6cun
Sacred Fire, which is an Italian brand based in Turin, manufactures an amp head called Screaming Witch which is a replica of the Sunn Beta Lead. You can find it here (in Italian) - bit.ly/2WeawXv

Great demo! I have a 212 beta combo, using as a head with a 412 cab... I hurt my ears when I bought it, I'm not kidding... It really is better for my stoner band than any other tube amp I have or had. It simply gives healthy sound, and the EQ is superb.

I own an Acoustic 134 amp. From around ‘72 I think. It is the cleanest, warmest sounding amp I’ve ever played through. It’s a perfect pedal platform. Insanely loud-never got it above 4 even during live gigs. While everyone knows about the Sunn, no one ever talks about Acoustic. I ended up pulling the amp from the cabinet (it was a 90+lb combo) and have used it in hundreds of shows. Another amp to consider if you use pedals as you main tone.

The Hot Tubes from EHX has a very similar character to the lower gain settings on this amp, crispy on the top and beefy/greasy/flubby on the lower end. I've found you can boost the Hot Tubes with a Rat or other fat distortion to approximate the tones of the Beta Lead, worth a shot if you're after doomy sludgy tones on a tight budget!

Sunn alpha series mixers are also a way cheaper alternative with the exact same preamp and opamp ICs and power section is still a healthy 100watts at 4ohms. I actually seem to enjoy the alpha 6 much better for the multiple channels and built in blendable nature of the circuit. Hey! Very nice video! - I have this amp (beta lead from 1974) for some years in my bedroom and now in 1-2 Weeks I'm gonna get this devil into the rehearsal room (which i seared for in my city for two damn years!) - anyways - I just can't wait to use my new gear on this amp. recently bought a GUILD polara S100, which evolved to be my Nr#1 Guitar (drop C) and I also got the walrus audio "ages" - I hope they'll give me both a nice heavy-rock'ish & doom-esque vibe - which will perfectly fit my new band's genre. Can you give me infos about this foot-switch? I just got the amp-combo (2x12" with the amp - which i've already taken out of the combo to use it as a head on a 4x12") but never ever knew there is an footswith. Is this aftermarket? original? where do i get something like that? I'd be happy with an (working) aftermarket-footswith tho! can you maybe help me to get my hands onto such nice footswitch? Btw - I'm thinking about bi-amping the sunn beta lead with a soldano hotrod 50 tube amp. this total set-up has balls of steel (i hope at least, lol) anyways, thanks for this video - would love to get an reply from you. Not dissing these, love concert leads, Hafler G-300s, etc. Maybe I shouldn't be pontificating so much, a pile of old Marshalls costs a poor man's fortune. Better bang for the buck to be found in relatively inexpensive but pro caliber gear. Hope for the kids. Make 'em sing! Do your research, find your treasure and get back to us.
