Never understood the logic of putting the wipers up in the snow and ice.... ever see what snow and ice does to a tree branch? That could be your wiper arm. Leave it down, don't turn them on until your windshield is clean, otherwise you're gonna tear them up anyways. (Advice from a Northern US off-roader)
