I don't think the message here is that people only care for one another in the event of tragedy or in this case death. The residents of Sunny Havens did not care for the Meat Man after his death; their body language (the hands in pockets, the casual stance and slow stroll up to him), lack of concern and reluctance to exert effort in helping him or checking him, all suggest that he is worth little in the eyes of his onlookers. The tone of voice that the residents use is unconcerned but also irritated. They can be heard to say the phrases "could never ever", "well" and "all this time". Together with the tone these seem to suggest the residents' indifference and their justification of not helping him. The Meat Man had always been an outcast, and nothing changed after his death. As to why, I could not work out. Perhaps the message is anti-meat, or more likely a metaphor for something. We may never know. This is my favourite video on the internet.

Very powerful little film. A man who was weird and scary was avoided by everyone until he eventually has a heart attack and is possibly dead only then everyone cares about him. They only care when hes probably dead. Reminds me of the song Grocer Jack (Excerpt from a Teenage Opera) in a way where they all take advantage of the grocer man and treat him like dirt only he dies of a heart attack and they realize 'Oh no we should have been nicer to him'

I don't think it's really a fair critique. I mean of course if someone fucking falls over and dies from a heart attack you're going to go see what's up. Meanwhile, if a man drove into the middle of my neighborhood and had a bunch of dirty meat in the back of a hatchback yelling "MEAT!", of course I'd avoid him.
