In fairness, Shadow was literally created in a desperate effort to cure Maria's sickness. It's just the other parties who were helping had agendas of their own for an unkillable warrior.

Abe joined GUN probably because of the ARK incident, as a "in order to fix the system I must do it from inside" kind of thing. Also, people involved in that are either retired or long dead by now. But now that I think about it, GUN was also responsible for creating Eggman. Maria's death was the catalyst that turned Ivo Robotnik bitter since all his family neglected him in favor of mourning Maria.

Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) only briefly goes into it, but he joined G.U.N. originally because he blamed Shadow more than G.U.N. for what happened on the ARK. He says multiple times in that game that "Shadow is the reason Maria is dead." An important thing to remember is that Abe never saw Maria get shot, he only knew that she died during the raid. And he was already afraid of Shadow because he knew what Shadow was, because he saw Gerald making the deal with Black Doom to get the final piece to finish Shadow, so with the information he had probably convinced himself that Shadow killed Maria to try and get away from G.U.N.

​@@JLuisJoni Hilariously while PS5 version has animatic with extra cut scenes... The animation itself was cut AGAIN and removed scenes of Gerald"s execution and Maria being pierced by a "shot" of lightning in Shadow's nightmare to fit game's ESRB rating. Though It does add a second aftercredits scene with Maria hugging Shadow in a flower field saying to him everything will be all right and then turning to stardust as Shadow is left alone by the broken tree.

In Shadow Generations, Gerald's journal comes with a note written by a third party to the commander that implies that his predecessor covered up the attack. Even the journal itself is edited to leave out incriminating information and could only by found thanks to Eggman.

10:26 To answer your question, Shadow was created with the innate ability to manipulate Chaos Energy due to Gerald Robotnik studying the Chaos Emeralds. This allows him to use techniques like Chaos Control, Chaos Spear, and Chaos Snap without necessarily needing a Chaos Emerald to do so, though he makes sure to have at least one on hand at all times to get the best out of those techniques. Sonic can also use Chaos Control, though he doesn’t do it nearly as often since he needs a Chaos Emerald to pull it off. Unlike Shadow, Sonic doesn’t have the ability to manipulate Chaos Energy as effectively or efficiently. He either needs a Chaos Emerald, or to be in his super form to wield Chaos Energy as efficiently as Shadow.

To be honest I don't have a problem with Shadow working with gun. It's been 50 years, so most of the people involved in the ark raid are probably already gone. The commander of Gun is even someone who lived aboard the ark along with Maria. After the events of SA2, I'm sure Shadow is mature enough to not hold onto a vendetta for everyone in the organization when most of them probably have nothing to do with him or what happened to the ark. If gun got up to any shady business again, I don't think Shadow would hesitate to fight them, but if they're genuinely helping to protect the world Shadow doesn't have a reason to make them his enemy. At the end of SA2 when Shadow remembered Maria wanted everyone to have a chance to be happy he gave up on his revenge to save the world, so I think it would be weird if right after that he decided to go back to fighting gun. Also if you're still confused about the timeline stuff in Shadow Generations, in Sonic Generations a random Eldritch God thing called the Time Eater mucks up the timeline, and Sonic meets a past version of himself, tails, and eggman. If Sonic can team up with a past version of himself then it makes sense Shadow could meet a past version of Maria and Gerald, nothing about Shadow's past was permanently affected or changed however. When the Time Eater starts Time Eatering all over the place, Black Doom seems to start harnessing its power to become a biblically accurate angel. I'mma be honest, don't know how that works, but it's kinda neat I guess.

If your curious about the whole Chaos Control thing, here's my understanding of it: Black doom has the innate ability to use Chaos Control, meaning he doesn't need an emerald to use it. So since Shadow was created using Black Doom's DNA, he can also naturally use it (presumably without an emerald but i'm not 100% sure on that). During SA2, after watching Shadow use Chaos Control, he was able to learn how to do it too, however he only ever used it in SA2 and O6 (however the events of the 06 technically never happend because time travel). Also a little side note and some Black Doom trivia, Chaos Control seems to be both teleporting and stoping time, however i don't know if they retconned that like in the comics or a later game. Finally, the Black Arms larva that was shown on the Ark in this video, is how Black Doom was able to regenerate and why he was on the Ark, kinda obvious but it went over my head initially so i wanted to include it. It's one of those weird "yes, but also no" things. Shadow naturally generates a moderate amount of chaos energy inside his body which is regulated by the Limiter rings he wears. This allows him to perform basic chaos techniques without a Chaos Emerald, like Chaos Spear and a shorter range teleport called Chaos Snap (his version of the homing attack in Generations). I don't believe he can manipulate time without an emerald though, meaning it's not a true Chaos Control. Some extra details: additional Chaos Emeralds extend the range and scale that he can use Chaos Control on, which is why he needed to get in close proximity to Rouge (and the three emeralds she was holding) in SA2 in order to teleport them both off of Prison Island. With all seven, you can teleport massive objects like the Black Comet and the ARK, which is why Black Doom needed Shadow to collect them. And while Sonic 06 technically retcons itself, it's still considered "canon" in some way, given Mephiles appearing in Shadow Generations, so the whole "time travel with two Emeralds" technique is probably still possible. And to confirm what you said, yes, Chaos Control allows the user to manipulate time and/or space. Some examples of spatial manipulation are, as previously mentioned, moving massive objects like the ARK and Black Comet, as well as Sonic teleporting directly from inside the escape pod in SA2 back onto the ARK using the fake emerald. And in Shadow Generations, using Chaos Control causes everything to freeze, including the in-game timer, which pretty definitively proves that time manipulation is possible.

Also thanks for the correction and additions, Between Shadow O5 and Frontiers, I have a bit of a gap of knowledge as I wasn't really playing the games at that time, and I only know some things about the IDW comics.

Some fun facts about emerl (the robot from the first one). He is an ancient machine that Gerald found in his research that's over 4000 years old. In legend he as known as the original ultimate lifeform and the god of wrath. Usually though he's about as harmless as a child, only reverting to his original programming of kill everything in extreme situations or when overloaded by having all the chaos emeralds. What makes him dangerous is that he can copy abilities just by watching them once. Which is why he was able to spin dash like shadow. Funny enough he and shadow are kind of like siblings. Not only because they were on the ark together but because Gerald the fucking madlad also gave Emerl part of Maria's soul like he did with shadows. Emerl ends up sacrificing himself and his final words to shadow was to ask "should I be happy I was born?" All is to say that emerl is a really interesting character locked in a game most people didn't play

There's no way to post this without feeling extra and kinda rude but honestly I just like Sonic idk. * The Gizoid Incident (Emerl's rampage aboard the ARK) is referenced in Sonic Battle. Gerald excavates an ancient combat robot at some point and brings it aboard the ARK. He tries activating it to convince GUN he's making progress and earn more time to work on Project Shadow without their interference, but after a certain point it goes berserk. Super cool to see that visualised here, if even only a little. * The "ultimate lifeform" moniker refers to Shadow being ageless and immune to all disease. GUN proposed and funded Project Shadow because they wanted an immortal supersoldier, Gerald at the time hated the idea of working on a potential weapon but agreed because he believed that research might somehow lead to a cure for Maria's autoimmune disease too. * Despite the complex history, Shadow joins GUN because he deems it the best way of protecting the entire world to honour his promise to Maria. Abe and Shadow talk it out during one of the Shadow 2005 game's pathways, and there's dialogue of them reconciling in the Expert Mode. But because of timeline shenanigans 06 is the only main canon instance of him working for GUN, and that game erases itself at the end through the closing of a time loop. * Sonic uses Chaos Control a number of times in SA2, 06, one of the Twitter Takeovers, Sonic X and the Archie Sonic comics. He just doesn't rely on it particularly often (because it doesn't suit his style & because the stories haven't really had a place for it since the Adventure-era), and has other random unaddressed abilities like Sonic Wind or his Frontiers projectiles that don't seem to be Chaos powers. * Shadow canonically needs an emerald to use any Chaos abilities. It's silly because those powers are what define his moveset + role in the franchise and there's justification for him to have an innate Chaos reserve: Gerald's Chaos Drives were part of his research into storing Chaos Emerald energy in living tissue, his inhibitor rings are explained to regulate his internal energy so that he doesn't straight up combust, the Biolizard (Project Shadow's first prototype before they switched to a hedgehog design) had a Chaos Control-inducing organ, and Black Doom provides his DNA to share his genetic proficiency with the technique. Further to that point, Black Doom and Neo Metal Sonic (after copying Shadow's bio-data) can use it without any emeralds. So there's literally every reason for Shadow to have some modicum of innate Chaos powers, and every other spinoff canon tends to give it to him, but regardless, each time the question gets asked in interviews they seem to hold that Shadow needs an emerald for Chaos Control or Chaos Spear (unclear what this means for his signature blue warp). * shadow the hedgehog omg ( つ ◕_◕ )つ
