Ahh, memories! I installed hundreds of liners for a chimney company in Virginia, both Supaflu and Solid Flue. I can see several things I would have done differently, but that's the nature of a service industry. No one warns you that one day you will come across an historic property that should be torn down, yet they want several thousand pounds of a masonry mix dumped in the top of the chimney. By the time it's all coffined up and cast, you feel like you built a whole new house. We cast homes and commercial chimneys. One day we'd be set up on the one way streets of Richmond, the next in a cul de sac in the Northern Neck. Having been in the industry as long as I was, I can say this is genuinely a product that saves lives. People don't realize the shoddy jobs done constructing chimneys in residential homes. Let them get dirty and have a chimney fire, and it jumps right to the framing of the house. Can't happen with a masonry liner. I've seen liners on fire like a jet engine, but no structural damage. Close them off at the bottom and they go right out. Shouldn't let the creosote build up in a chimney. Good stuff. My chimney is cast.

You need a 1/4" expansion joint between the top tile and the crown, otherwise heat expansion will crack the crown. Crowns look best if you build a form to create a 3" vertical edge that overhangs the brick. Also creating a drip point so that water shed by the crown drips off instead of running down the chimney. Remember to apply a chimney sealer after all masonry has cured at least 3 days. You guys have a great system. Good video too.

Can you pour around my current flue tiles without removing them?
@SupafluRestorations12 жыл бұрын
For demonstration purchases we keep the cap off. We do recommend a chimney cap in most instances.

The void formers at size are around 18 lb of air pressure, they are very firm to the touch. Yet flexable enough to bend around curves.

A liner would last longer than this? OR would it last just as long but cost much less to install? Thinking about refurbishing mine to make it useable again with a wood burning stove.
@blackvelvetchimney6 жыл бұрын
I would have done a pre cast crown or poured one. Bond break is easy- use 1/4” foam and gently remove after a cure period. RTV after. Beautiful Job!!

The top tile in this video was installed just like mine...and as stated below, it pulled loose during cleaning. I had to pour a 4" cap to hold mine firmly in place. As an "oh by the way", I used dye to make the cap black, providing a nice contrast. The lack of brick repointing was the same as well, which I fixed even before the top tile fell out.
@spiegelsteven13 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if they repointed up the brick when they were done because it looked like there were no mortar between the bricks its a wonder that the chimney didnt blow out with all the presure ! It seemed as though the guy looked like he knew what he was doing and i have been a Brick Mason for 27 years and i could tell it wasnt his first date with a trowel . Besides he was trying to make a good impression on the video .

|A few things in error on this video, although this is a wonderful product. 1/ the chimney exterior should have been properly repaired prior to the installation of the Supaflu system. Tuckpointing in order to maintain structural integrity of the brick units 2/ there needs to be a proper cemnet crown cap installed with overhang and drip lip as per NFPA211 3/ there needs to be a bond break between the flue tile and the cement wash or crown.

The mix flows very easily. You"ll notice the springs in the vidio, around bends extra are placed to provide the needed clearances. The void formers, although flexable, remain round. The wieght of the mix is the same all the way around it.

How does the mixed product pour around bad bends??? When the tubing is let down around bad bends its going to lose its shape!!!!!

Ooooh, more cool tools. I wish I had those. That looked easy and fun. Thanks for the video. My ghetto method is putting in the stainless steal liner and cementing all around it. Le the next owners deal with it, right? No, just kidding. Thanks for the show.

Yea chimney caps are great, as far as chimney sweep are concerned. They cause the smoke to slow and take a 90 degree turn before it can leave the chimney. This can allow the smoke a chanch to cool and deposit the un-burnt carbons on the chimney wall. Please... only place a cap on for the off season.

d sloan you mean like these two dead squirrels from the inspection i did today. I can't believe someone would suggest not installing a cap. I wish I could include the photo it was kind of gross
@LordVoltRod2c6 жыл бұрын
Problem is I would think you would also be getting rain and snow down the chimney. You really don't want it getting wet in there. I do know when chimneys are not capped leaves get in there and water comes out the clean out door if it rains hard enough.
@LordVoltRod2c6 жыл бұрын
Chimney cap means no presents. Nah I will just cap it off. The chimney is worth more than gift wrapped crap you never asked for. Maybe that is why Santa makes sure it's never what you asked for. Just cap the thing. It's always the kids who have all the Chrismas fun aw Sh-t. And if that don't make matters worse I found out you shouldn't be burning unwanted gifts in the fireplace. Can't we grown ups have any fun!?!

"Properly installed liner"you say.Someday you should tell me about properly installed liners.Like air gaps or insulation maybe."If you ever have a real problem" Well,with a stainless liner,at the very best you would need to remove the liner and replace it. At worst, what you would do is most likely rebuild your house.The poured liner system used by Solid Flue was tested at higher temp.s then a chimney fire for three times longer then the average fire. Ask anyone who has one,the wool was worth it

"7000 dollar wool" ? "10 years" ? you do not know what you are talking about !!!! I have been pouring chimneys for thirty years, the refractory does not fall out. If it did, it should be less trouble then removing the old tile, right.

Yes the products are very differant. As a installer of poured liners sence 1984, that I can agree with. I worked with Mr. MacFarland, repairing a chimney on the campus of Oxford Univ.(UK) as well as hundreds of others in the Central Michigan area. This vidio is a show case of poor workman ship. No connector thimble,lack of consistency in the mixing. The crown was a joke, I hope that they dont charge when the have a chance the replace it. I could go on and on and on, but I'm out of characters....

Big mess why bust all the flue out just reline that bastard with cement like heatshield does now you have holes in walls just way more work then needed.
@chriskelvin248 Жыл бұрын
1) the flue tile was damaged from a chimney fire, who knows how cracked or busted up it was throughout the whole flue 2) if you put a smaller diameter liner inside the existing broken flue, you are left with a smaller diameter flue pipe than before. You have to maintain the same diameter as originally designed or screw up the draw of the chimney. That means smoke and CO in the house. It would just create another serious problem. 3) I see there is a thimble for a wood stove in this particular chimney. Big no-no to feed a larger thimble into a smaller flue. 4) if there was a fireplace below, there is a direct relationship between the flue cross section area and the fireplace opening area. That even changes with chimney height l!

Plz do better crowns! Wait on second thought, Keep doing crappy ones. That’s job security lol

WOW, I'm sorry but i have to comment. First off this is the same process as "golden Flue" or "Solid Flue". Second, This guy looks like he has never worked on a chimney before, he is too dressed up like he could be the owner of the company and doesn't want his guys to appear on camera. Finally the tile that this guy puts in place will crack or simply come out every time the chimney gets swept.
