That Oliver Guy - Chris Losey

Күн бұрын

After owning this tractor for over 30 years, I finally found a job for it on the farm. It starts with tinkering with the Oliver 440 and when that doesn't work out, the Super 44 steps up to get the job done.

My Son experience in All forms with High performance Drag Racing Engines ( Alcohol, Gas, With or without forced induction, has made an Art of "Reading" the spark plugs...... With the ignition systems now you can control the timing on each Cylinder seperate from the others and if you know what to look for by reading the plugs you can move the timing either way. for max performance......

@@ThatOliverGuyChris two years ago, there was a lot of downed corn around here. We were advised to be very careful buying a used combine for a couple of years, as a lot of combines had a lot of dirt ran through them.

Tedding sure makes a big difference this time of year and the little guy seemed to handle it well but I’ll bet the ride was a little rough
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 ай бұрын
@@larryfrey1283 the ride wasn't too bad, but that was probably due to the 4 speed transmission. Third gear wasn't fast enough and 4th was way too fast. The slower ground speed did make for a smoother ride, but I could have done the job quicker with the 66.

Thanks! You aren't kidding. In road gear the shifter is against my leg, so I have to keep that to the right, which then makes it hard to use the clutch because my leg is now directly under the steering wheel. I need to make a recumbent seat for it. Maybe a captain's chair with a cup holder or 2. LOL

Interesting that sure looks like a Minneapolis Moline tel-o-flo hydraulic system, they did make an offset tractor for a while in the 50's. And if that's the case that three point only has draft control in the center detent position, any point down from center and it goes All the way down, all the way back and it goes all the way up until the lever is centered again manually or automatically
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 ай бұрын
It probably is the same system. The majority of the tractor was outsourced. Continental engine, Clark transmission, I don't know on the hydraulic unit. What you described is how it worked when I mowed lawn with it 20+ years ago. Something must be sticking inside, or possibly beoken.

what is the reasoning behind one tractor one job?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I follow. I do have quite a few tractors and it's just as easy to leave them hooked up to a piece of equipment for the season, but the tractors typically get to do more than one job.
@Dan-qy1rg
@Dan-qy1rg 11 ай бұрын
Both did okay, the Super 44 did real good and the 440, well if you can get the hydraulics to let the 3 points down, it would be good too. They both ran fine, so not a problem there. My JD 1020 has a single stage clutch, so doing anything like square baling or brush hogging is a pain in the real axle. Good luck with it, hope you have a great day!

Seems like my Farmall Cub is more roomy and comfortable to sit on for another fellow big guy. Same with an A-140 I’d guess. Maybe it’s just the camera but it seems to me like those Oliver offsets were built overly narrow for the operator.

Chris what year Oliver 440, how many did made ? How long did you have this tractor? What Oliver 440 tractor used farm for? One question what year old Massey Ferguson combine, new combine and how many years Massey Ferguson made combine? Thanks again answer my questions great video keep up good work.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 ай бұрын
My 440 is a 1962 model. There were about 750 made. Dad bought this tractor somewhere around 1992, so we've had it a little over 30 years now. The most common use for the Super 44 and 440 was cultivation on tobacco farms. My 8570 combine is a 1991 model year, the new one is a 2011 model year. From what I can find, Massey first started making combines in 1938. Jump ahead to 1985 and White Farm Equipment was in financial trouble, and Massey Ferguson was wanting to get into the rotary combine market. So White sold its complete combine line to Massey, but they only put the 9720 and the brand new 9320 into production. The 9320 became the 8560, then the 8570, 8780 and so on until they finally stopped using that platform in 2020. Any Massey Ferguson combines now produced are the Fendt Ideal combine with Massey Ferguson branding. So even this "new to me" 9795 can trace its roots back to White Farm Equipment.
