Around 1982 the Kawasaki dealer in my hometown had a 1972 240 Z that he completely tore apart and rebuilt into a IMSA looking car complete with a homemade fiberglass body kit & a massive whaletail rear spoiler in the back room next to the loading dock with the first tube frame chassis I ever saw, a 350 chevy, M21 4 speed & narrowed 9" rear. You could hear it coming from a 1/2 mile away!

Very nice! Thanks for the tour and info - most of which I had no idea, but loved the look of this car back in the day as well.

Nissan Motors was unsure about their ability to be successful in the US market. They adopted the name Datsun to distance themselves from the corporate (Japan) name just in case they did not succeed in the USA. The story is that when the first cars arrived under the JDM name of Fairlady, Mr. K (the father of Datsun/Nissan USA) believed the name not appropriate for a macho sports car. He supposedly tore off the script badge, turning the F on the side to create the letter "Z". I have an '81 280zx turbo with 30k miles. It's a surprisingly solid, well-built car (unlike the tinny 210's of that era) and a very comfortable GT cruiser.

Reason why the headlights became covered was a mandate for safety! Ruined the looked entirely!

I agree

Ohh I always thought they're for looks since they didn't come standard with covers even till the 280z

Not true about the headlight covers. They were an aftermarket item here inspired by the racing cars of the day. The headlights were covered for better aerodynamics. They were available in Japan from the factory as an option.
