I remember trying to get the 100 coin star in Dire Dire Docks and I constantly got sucked into that square hole trying to grabs those few coins near it. It was infuriating, and after I actually grabbed the star, I noticed near the start of the level there were four coins located near the edge of the water which couldn't be seen unless you get close enough to them. That stage is one of my least favorites.
@sagichdirdochnicht46534 жыл бұрын
Most of the level while not being GREAT isn't really that bad, especially for a water level. But the 100 Coins SUCK. They suck so hard. You can't see the fucking things, wich makes it extremely frustrating to collect them. And the major problem with that is, that there are only 106 coins in total to obtain in this level. That's incredibly few. If we pare this with not being able to see them if you aren't upfront, you can only obtain them by a) Knowing where they are or b) searching every damn inch of the level. And having to swim around those god damn circles, so slow and silly, and not fun, just to get those damn coins. Drags the red coin Stars down as well, if you want 120 Stars (wich I do), because no matter what, you need to collect at least a few of them. So might just collect em all to get both stars.

The critiques of SM64's movement (changing direction at low speeds) and camera (not being able to handle enclosed spaces) were some of the best I've ever heard, and honestly changed the way I view the game as a whole. It's still one of my favorite games of all time, and I don't think anyone can deny it's influence or importance, but I really appreciate you convincing me of its flaws... it's definitely not perfect. I really respect your perspective and knowledge of game design!
@salvatronprime98825 жыл бұрын
Both of those criticisms are not valid, actually. I get the impression that he's not actually playing the game with an N64 controller (which it was specifically designed for). The turn radius argument is dumb - when you need to make small precise movements, you just utilize the analog controls with a very light pressure, the turn radius will remain small because the light pressure is the appropriate movement. The radius only becomes "too large" if you are swinging wildly from light angular pressure to heavy angular pressure in a different direction, meaning quite literally "you are doing it wrong". If you need to run fast, then run fast. If you need to walk slowly, then walk slowly. Don't try to do both. It doesn't even make sense to try. This is plainly obvious in the video example, the player is using quick heavy steps in alternating directions instead of one light continuous motion. (just like other "tutorials" examples, the game spells this out for you in the first few stages when you are walking on the thin planks for example. You must utilize the light pressure on the stick while also utilizing the c-buttons. It's very simple. Remember that this game is designed for children, and they can figure it out quickly. If an adult is having a problem controlling this game, the problem is with the adult who clearly lacks skills.) The camera... there are 4 buttons and robust options to get the appropriate view at all times. It's one of the best cameras in any game, period. But this is not so obvious if you are not using the N64 controller, which the game was designed spefifically to utilize. If a person cannot figure out this camera, they are either lacking in basic skills, or using the wrong controller. Or both. This is a horrible review with many factual errors.

Great retrospective and analysis! Reminds me at my own childhood playing Super Mario 64 where you were the king on school grounds if you had managed to get all 120 stars. I am convinced that one of the reasons for MIPS is for the player to find out about Shifting Sand Land. No first time player would easily catch that rabbit and probably jump against a wall near the hidden entrance back there only to realize that the wall is all wobbly and you can probably enter it. At least that's how I found out about it as a kid. :)

This is a great design doc about the small details. I'm suprised you havn't talked about the improvements that Super Mario 64 DS made. They made the camera control and precision movement easier, as well as having Yoshi with mid-air corrections. I think that one has aged better than the original.

On your criticism of tick-tock-clock: In my opinion the stage is really manageable once you use the mario-camera, not the lakitu one (I think you switch with R, but i might be wrong). I think if you consider Rainbow Ride and Tick Tock Clock again from a different persective you may see that the flaws of constrained camera space were actually intelligently designed. In my opinion these levels constrained camera movements forced you to relearn movement skills you have already gotten used to, presenting a new challenge. For example reversing direction on a shifting platform while climbing to a new platform on Rainbow Ride was easier to accomplish with a sideways somersault + ground pound, as opposed to the jump + turn while adjusting camera + double jump many players were using up to this point. Also you forgot to mention the castle itself was a level that contained all the entrances to the other levels....having 15 stars to find. The 3 cap room red coin stars, 2 from Peaches slide, 2 from the rabbit in the basement, The flying level near Rainbow Ride, The swimming level near Jolly Roger Bay, a red coin star in each Bowser world and 3 castle mushrooms handing them out like candy. 15 stages, 15 hidden stars - Coincidence? I think not!
@aidenhanson8846 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that you’re not fighting against bowser anymore. You’re fighting against Mario and his Lakitu. A game should be challenging because of the level design, not because you cripple the player with confusing or strange control and navigation. While an interesting concept that I myself briefly toyed around with while thinking of video game ideas, it doesn’t make a difficult game. It makes a frustrating game where being used to and mastering the controls is punished by turning it around and changing it completely. -I hope you enjoyed this little comment-

suddenly 40 minutes were over xD very nice video! I only played the DS remake of mario 64, they fixed a lot of things there imo, but I don't know how different it would be to play with a joystick :o

Super Mario 64 (DS) is still my favourite 3D Mario game ever. Edit: Actually, that would be Super Mario 3D Land.

With Mario's ledge grab animation, I heard that the game animates him hanging on the ledge despite his real game position being on top of the ledge, which is why Mario can't inch off a ledge

Calling comparing Mario 64 to Banjo Kazooie "unfair" sounds dangerously close to arguing that people are obligated to ignore understandable technical issues and pretend like they like the final product more than they actually do.

12:38 I feel that if the hitbox where bigger during this time period especially with the scale of some of the level design being a bit smaller might have made the platforming feel clunky and possibly more difficult to manuever.

15:30 I had an idea for a Super Mario 64 hack: Super Luigi Sun and Moon. You play as Luigi, and try to save Mario. There are two types of stages: daytime stages and nighttime stages. The daytime stages would just be the normal stages with the stars, coins, enemies, etc. moved around a bit, and some various additions or something. The nighttime stages would be that stage during the night, with more challenging enemies, and a fair amount of ghosts. Luigi would control similar to Mario in the daytime stages, and in nighttime stages, he would use the Poltergust 3000 (the 5000 model can't use elements) to ward off the ghosts. As a result, however, Luigi's jumping ability would severely decrease. The nighttime stages would have harder platforming challenges, and more micro-challenges per star, while the daytime stages would make the micro-challenges harder to get to.

loved this video! you perfectly verbalized my frustrations as a semi-casual player with mario's different turn radius at different speeds, as well as the camera, but also all of the other incredible things that are available to people once they explore mario's movement options

Amazing video but i disagree strongly with Tick Tock Clock. Tick Tock Clock is one of the best levels in the game for me, the difficulty is a good balance and first: shows that sometimes you need to be carefull while platforming. Second: i personally dont know why anybody wanted to turn around in the level like you do, plus its not that hard to change direction in those platforms, just reach max speed (which you can btw) and then turn around! third: i think that the thing of climbing the clock over and over its good because if you did a part by luck the first time, you have to do it again to show that you are skilled because, lets face it, luck isnt what Super Mario 64 gameplay is for. And fourth: the re-climbing thing also lets you try the level in different ways. The first time at normal speed, the second one at fast to add difficulty, the third slow and the fourth freezed. I really like that and it adds variety to the level. Well, i kinda agree with rainbow ride, the only thing i dont is the turn around thingy but tbh the level is kinda crappy Great video

I know this video is over a year old, but at 28:00 Ceave says that you have to enter Wet-Dry World with at the top of the painting to get to the town. It's true that this is one way to get to the town, but this stage also has a cannon that can be used to launch over the wall to drop down to the town as well. Just wanted to point that out.

First time I ever really hear someone else talk about the subject but I absolutely agree that hitboxes should be designed so that objects you want to pick up has either larger hitboxes or the items themself are attracted to you, while hazardous things should have hitboxes slightly smaller than what they look like.

it certainly aged beautifully. I dont have any of the nostalga that clouds peoples vision. I wasnt born yet when the game came out and played it fairly recently (2016) and I LOVED it. cold cold mountain was my favourite stage because of the sliding mechanic. it was brilliant as a game even though my first experience of the game was 20 years after its release

Quick Tip for the camera: Use zoomed out Mario cam by doing R to switch cam modes and then press Down on the C-Stick (I don't know why it's called a C stick when it's not a joystick) Edit: You forgot the Cap stages.
@brandonbombplays93043 жыл бұрын
Those cap levels are secret stars, and therefore not standalone levels.

5:00 i actually didn't understand that hint and found it by complete accident when trying to use the cannon to get the own cage and my finger slipped. TBH not sure if u would have ever found it, would probably have spend my days running around the stage trying to find a bomb-omb to throw into walls...

Your points about the levels being rushed and how it would be nice to see what they could have done with their excellent systems has they had they time played into one of my long time arguments... I would have loved to see a proper sequel to Mario 64, and by that I do NOT mean “Super Mario Sunshine”, but one that came out on the 64... a game where they spent all their time making excellent levels since they already had everything else in place.
@jinjoscar6 жыл бұрын
28:07 Actually, there is a cannon that you can use to shoot yourself into the lower part of the level should you not have the water level required to enter. Of course it's more difficult to aim the cannon, but not impossible.

Putting completely aside technical limitations, do remember that Mario 64 was like revolutionary period they changed so much and it was the first real 3D platformer ever pretty much. They were absolutely still figuring things out and I think that things like the swimming level you were talking about all had their reasons for existing, ultimately you can have all the best marketers and gameplay testers but you really cannot predict how a game will feel to the general public. They did their best.
