The green stars are like the moons in Super Mario Odyssey, except they're are handled worse. They should have been collectables so you don't get booted out of the level every time you collect one.

The only way to access the green stars involves that you 100% the core game. Honestly getting booted out every time isn't bad as they were meant as a bonus for those who 100% the core game. The game also has fast loading times so not a lot of time is lost.
