One thing thing I miss from the SNES version, that's not on the Switch, is the glowing symbol that appear when a character uses a special move. Like the blue Spades for Mario and the green Clubs for Mallow. I know it's a small thing, but I liked the whole playing cards suits aesthetic. ♠♣★♦♥

Has anyone noticed this detail at around 2:19 in the remake? Toad is wearing a blue vest while the other mushroom retainers are wearing red vests. Not so in the original.

As far as the dialogue goes… I like the text boxes coming from the person talking. But if they made a small blip sound queue when dialogue started. Or better yet a small gibberish sound from the character speaking would’ve been a nice touch. Also, would’ve rather they kept the paper scroll aesthetic over the sanitized transparent blue text boxes with the white border. Just feels like it strips away some of the character.

Same. Star Ocean Second Story remake did the same thing. Replaced the cool text boxes with something absolutely generic and basic. I don't understand why companies keep doing this. Both remakes look amazing, but the text thing is annoying and I don't get why they get rid of unique charm like that.

I kinda wished after they first announced this game, that they released the original on snes online. My first thought in the beginning of the first trailer was that we were getting it on snes online and then it turned into a whole remake (which I'm still very excited for)

Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll release separate versions for at least most of their games, if they released the SNES version first, fewer people would buy the remake since it appears to mostly be 1-1. If they released the original, there’s not very little point if they have the remake. It’d be great to have multiple versions, and I noticed they did this for Link’s Awakening, but from a business perspective, it’s not always a good tactic. Keeping certain games exclusive to the online service gives people more incentive to pay for it.

The attack that mario guards at 3:34, it seems like different action command timing than the original for this specific attack. In the original, that attack from that enemy has a little delay iirc (not shown in the side by side). I wonder if a lot of the timings will be slightly different for veteran players who are used to the exact timing for perfect guards.

Yeah i believe they stated there are changes to the defense and super hit timings. I believe they made them easier to time.

My only gripe is the text size. Maybe I’ll feel different once I have the game on hand and maybe there is an option for changing it but the OG text boxes and text size made so easy to read at a glance. I’m a grown adult now and sometime only play late and sometimes reading a bunch of small text when tired just ain’t it. I’m sure I won’t care once I have the game in hand but just a nitpick of mine.

While it's very faithful (to a point it's a bit flavourless), I don't understand why they've decided to not keep that very distinctive look for the fighting scenes happening on a "chunk" of the set (like a puzzle piece). For me that's what I remember the most (with the squished characters and harsh colours) from the SNES version. That was a strong visual concept and could have been extended to the exteriors themselves (which used to be like that too as we can see in the comparison but maybe lack the "thickness" needed for the diorama effect). I'm still impatient and that's awesome to have that game coming (with a french translation, it's a first for us frenchies), but I can't stop thinking this could be perfect if only that sort of things (including the battle UI) were a bit more refined.

@@LZMP60 If you want to make it sound funny, yes 😝 but if you are serious, no that's not what I meant. I don't want it to be "the same", I wish it carried the same vibe, which means not trying to be the same, but understanding why it felt in such way. That's where this remaster misses its target on a few aspects, because while the graphical style was a very strong proposition back then, here it looks very basic (and unpolished for the UI). A good example of what I mean, is how Mother 3 was remade in the Curiomatic mockup. It doesn't look like the original, it's not a 2D-HD style either. They took the artworks, the vibe of the series, and their proposition is perfect, to me it's exactly how the game feels, although it looks (obviously) very different. Ultimately, this remaster is nice, I enjoyed playing it and I don't regret buying it. It's nice, but not great.

I like the new look but I still prefer the look of the classic. Still, looking forward to getting back to this. My biggest complaint is the dialog boxes and the inventory. They feel lifeless compared to the original.

It feels like those in charge of that stuff just did the least and copied and pasted the old file texts into a new document used it for the new game and called it a day

I've said this before and I'll say it again, this cutscene 2:19 its pacing of animation was so much funnier in the original. The whirlwind transition Mario makes before turning into a different character model kinda makes the whole air of the scene a bit, less exciting, I would say. I wish the devs had kept the instant cut-to-a-different-character-model transition instead and Mario crazy punching like a maniac in the air. That's not to say the remake looks bad per se. It looks and sounds gorgeous and I absolutely cannot wait to experience this game all over again with brand-spanking new SupergraFX!

I NEVER played this. Love super Mario on my super nes but I missed out on the first Mario rpg ever made. I’m very excited to play this game and FINALLY see what all the fuss was about. But I gotta admit, this remake looks VERY well done

I like more the graphics, animations and music in the original. Easing the difficulty breaks the original game. I will replay Super Mario RPG next on my SNES (alongside all other timeless RPGs there) Owner of both SNES and Switch, I love both consoles.

SE didn’t want to make a remake they wanted to make a sequel and that is what they did. FFVII remake is no remake from the technical pov but a time travel sequel with a narrative subtitle.

Small thing but i dont like how the begginning stage bowser castle was changed.. in the original you walk into the room to confront bowser and everything is white.. the snes parallax scrolling is put to use to highlight the chandeliers above you and the whole secene feels odd almost like an anime. In the remake it looks very blah. Lacks effect. Also i think they could of made marios character model a little more reminiscent of the original. . He looks like he belongs in a 3d side scrolling platfrormer in the remake.

Aside from the UI, everything looks amazing. The old text boxes and action selection boxes had so much personality but the new one is just so... basic. It's not going to keep me from playing, just feels like one thing they could've spent more time on.

Honestly this is a great comparison between the switch version and the SNES original, and I think the SNES original really does hold it against the switch, but you can tell that the switch version does obviously look better in most places than others. Both are very very close to each other..

prefer the original. not a fan of the new nintendo mario graphics. imo has no unique character or lasting impression. really wish they would hire new artists or give them a chance to make a completely new artstyle for mario. its been like almost 20 years already. back in the day, each mario release had its own spin on graphics and art.

1:45- Oh my God! (Joseph Joestar style) I look forward to the Remake. I like this more over Star Ocean The Second Story R, that one disappointed me the most. The only downside to Super Mario RPG Remake is it's exactly like the original that there's no Third Person Camera. I'd get the game, but I have yet have the ability to record from my Switch... Or a PS3 or PSTV.

I'm honestly surprised Nintendo got the rights to reamke this from the ground up again from Square Enix. It's great to see it making a comeback on switch. Especially for people like me who wasn't much into RPGs growing up on the snes era. Now I can fully enjoy this class in full HD soon yay.
