Few people talk about how each Yoshi's Island level feels like a self-contained story, an episode of a delightful kid's show, more like an adventure than an obstacle course. Your description of Mario Wonder reminded me a lot of the reasons I love Yoshi's Island, and I'm glad you concluded the video referencing that game. I was afraid it would just be another New Sup with a different aesthetic, but I'm happy it doesn't seem like it. Looking forward to playing it.

I still remember playing Yoshi's Island for the first time. It was a lifechanging experience. As much love as it gets I still feel it's an underrated gem. There are very few games I would call "perfect." Tetris is a hard lock. Yoshi's Island though? Maybe it's not perfect but it's so close to perfect I feel it's fair to argue it is. The beautiful spritework still stands to this day as some of the best of all time imo. The graphics were especially incredible for its time on the SNES no less. That 3D chip was such a wonderful idea. And don't even get me started on the OST. To this day random tracks from this game will suddenly start playing in my head. I also think it has the best fortress theme of any Mario game. There was a sense of magic to Yoshi's Island that few experiences ever quite match. It is one of the few games I ever gave a perfect score to.

I feel like this game is in some ways a response to everything that came out of Mario Maker. Players got such mileage out of the standard Mario elements and came up with such amazing designs, that Nintendo must have seen it all and realized that in order to make a new 2D platformer, they needed to do something truly unique and impossible to imitate. That's why I think there's so many brand new ideas in each level; an example of fan-content pushing the developers to innovate their own IP and bring back the "wonder" that was originally associated with the series from the beginning.
@averhardt5840 Жыл бұрын

I like you enthusiasm but I'm a little confused by this. NSMBU was a directorial debut, so was NSMB2, NSMB1 and Wii were directed by the same guy and his only works to date, Odyssey was the solo directorial debut from Hayashida's protoge... Like, can it even be said that the old masters are the ones passing the flame when they gave it up to other young prospects decades ago, some of whom failed? Mouri clearly knows what he's doing but he isn't like some wunderkind that they finally found to be worthy of the Mario mantle

Honestly, this has been one of the most fun and creative Mario games in a while. Every course is extremely fun to play and explore, and the Wonder effects are a welcome change of pace. My only complaint is that excluding the final two courses, this game was extremely easy. I 100 percented every level leading up to the final Bowser conflict first playthrough and 100 percented the entire game a few days later. For reference, I often find myself struggling with the later pre-bowser courses in Super Mario Bros. 3 and World. So I could only imagine how easy this game is to long time veterans of the series. Despite that though, I do highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Mario game closer in design philosophy to Super Mario Bros. 3 and World. It won’t challenge you as much as those older titles, but compared to the New Super Mario Bros. games from the past few years, it is a welcome breath of fresh air.

I felt this way about Yoshi's Island, that a lot of Mario games can be separated into worlds but I couldn't tell you a favorite level per say, 3D World was probably the closest to actually having varying levels that felt entirely different concept-wise from one another, Yoshi's Island was the original for me though.

Nintendo knows how to make a masterpiece video game and they don’t need major graphics to do it. This game brought me back to my childhood. When gaming was simple and addictive.

I changed the language of the flowers to Korean and it made them more tolerable. I don't understand Korean, but the voice acting for the flowers was wonderful out of all the languages to me. It was funny to hear the random English words that I guess there was no Korean equivalent. Also almost 100% the game already. Definitely one of the few games I have bought and actually can't put it down. Going to get back to it later today when I get home.

Side note it's 10/10 game and would have been a 11/10 except there are a few levels that aggravated me to rage because you have to time the jumps perfectly. I got the CRKD nitro deck for my switch that allows you to program the extra back buttons. You can't remap the Y dash button to a shoulder button with the in-game change button controls so you can easily continuously hold it for jump, jump, jump maps with jump on X. My poor arthritic hands were yelling at me till I finally tried out the button programing. T^T So get the CRKD switch nitro deck if you are an elderly 30+ year old gamer and need those extra back buttons. The only complaint about the deck is the rumble of it sucks so had to turn it off, right stick feels out of place for my large hands, and no Amiibo scanner.

I honestly think Super Mario Odyssey turning out to be a huge success paved the road for them to try a similar approach in Wonder in that they're free to try new game mechanics instead of being forced to play it safe with gameplay as other big studios with established franchises make their design teams do.
