+Dan Barker I know it's been a couple of years, but here's the explanation: Early Ford Pintos were found to be very susceptible to explosions in collisions, especially when hit from the rear. I believe Ralph Nader labeled them, "Unsafe at any speed." It was a piece of general culture knowledge in the days of this game show.

Nader wrote a book targeting vehicle safety titled "Unsafe at Any Speed." The book was published in 1965. The Pinto entered the consumer market in 1971. While Nader covered the entire automobile industry, the main focus was the Corvair, not the Pinto.
