Imo, don't try to make skincare for babies, just buy what reputable companies have already tested and marketed for them. If you make something and it is harmful, that would be unfortunate. I work for a cosmetic ingredient supplier and the regs when it comes to infants/toddlers are so strict, it is not a good space for DIY. It's like when people try to make their own SPF = foolish to think they can do better.

@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tania! Have you read the partner blog post? I have suggested some broad stroke ideas for alternatives. Remember: it is essential that the base contain no water, and it needs to be able to suspend the L-ascorbic acid powder so it doesn't settle out. Happy experimenting!
@taniavisser272 жыл бұрын
@@HumblebeeAndMe I have indeed. We are very limited with regards to availability (and affordability) of raw ingredients😞 That is why an oil to milk balm formula(although oilier on the skin) feels like an option. I am definitely going to give it a go. Thank you🌸

I bought all the ingredients and tried it out today. However I couldn’t get the vitamin c to a very fine powder. I even tried with a supposedly already finely powdered vitamin c powder. There still visible small vitamin c specs in the suspension even though I stirred this for quite some time. Could you please provide some tips on how you powdered the L-Ascorbic acid? How long it needs to be powdered and how much time to grind it up even further or what it should look like when it is fine enough to be used in this formula? Thank you so much 😊
@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christine! Since vitamin C is not soluble in the base, there will always be some small specks, no matter how finely you grind it. This is why I recommend mixing the suspension with a water-containing product at the moment of use; it should dissolve readily in that and you'll get a smooth application. Have you tried that yet? Are you still encountering gritty vitamin C after mixing it with a hydrous toner or lotion?

@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
This formulation is a suspension, not a solution. The L-ascorbic acid is suspended (not dissolved!) in an anhydrous base. L-ascorbic acid is water soluble; in order for it to dissolve, a formulation needs to contain water. The key to the stability of this formulation is the absence of water. L-ascorbic acid will not dissolve in this formulation. It will remain solid and will be noticeable if you rub this suspension directly into the skin without mixing it with some sort of product that contains water first. This is why I encourage grinding and smashing the L-ascorbic acid as finely as possible and mixing it with a product that contains water before application. Please read the free partner blog post if you haven't for more information. Happy making!

Hi I'm years late to the party 😀here. Unfortunately, I tried the 3 ingredient serum two times and found that Coco-caprylate does not create a uniform mixture. The L-assorbic acid is extremely grainy. Not sure if its the Coco-caprylate or the acid thats the issue. Perhaps the solution is to attempt to grind it. Unfortunately the online directions didn't mention this. I suppose I will try for a third time. UGH.

Hi! Did you, by chance, stop watching after the screen where the formulation is shown? Or perhaps you were joking when you said "unfortunately the online directions didn't mention this"? The solution is, indeed, to grind the vitamin C-as explained and demonstrated in the video starting at 01:18. The written formulation in the description box and blog post specifies "finely powdered L-Ascorbic acid", and the free partner blog post also explains that it's best to grind the L-ascorbic acid and details how to do that (it's the same method shown in the video). Finally, the application instructions at the end explain that you'll want to mix it with some sort of product that contains water to dissolve the vitamin C for a smoother application experience. So, yeah... the online directions definitely do mention it?

@@HumblebeeAndMe Hi thanks for the reply. I reread and saw I missed the details in my online reading (RIF - Reading is Fundamental). I took a screen shot of the recipe only. My bad! Last night, I was just tired and so frustrated, but I was eventually going to stop and think after the 3rd go at this - I'm glad I just hopped to this vid.. So today I followed the advice (I actually didnt believe it would work) but it did. I have found that regrinding poorly ground starbucks beans or even rice (for rice flour) never works. So I was pleasantly surprised. YaaY! I hit more snags though. I'm guessing it is the silicone i'm using. The end product separates and doesnt blend - the end product is greasy. I will purchase silicone from TKB trading and try again. Thanks for all you do!

@HumblebeeAndMe Hi I was able to formulate VC without ANY silicone using Jojoba oil+Distilled water. It's consistent with my Tizo Vitamin C. I really dislike the silicone. It diluted perfectly. But you saved me on the l-Ascorbic acid grinding. Maybe I will try the TBK silicone if it's not oily/greasy mess.

@@Tech.Luxe1 I'm afraid the addition of water means what you've made will not last longer than maybe 10ish days before the L-ascorbic acid oxidizes and becomes ineffective :/ You also need a preservative and to check & adjust the pH once water is involved. Check out Lab Muffin's video on an easy vitamin C serum if you want to go the hydrous route :)

I wish I could use vitamin C! However I use Retin A so my skin will not tolerate it. Be careful when using vitamin C with actives as it may cause sensitivity. I noticed the serum you recommended to use this vitamin C with has lactic acid in it. That may cause some people sensitivity. Really nicely done on your vitamin C serum!!!!!

Thanks for watching! The serum I recommend has a tiny, tiny amount of lactic acid for pH adjusting-0.07% of a 90% solution-which is nowhere close to the level required to be an active in the formulation. I do specifically say in both the video and the post not to use this with AHA/BHA/retinol products :)

You can still use vitamin c! As long as they aren’t layered over each other in the same routine you’re fine, it’s recommended to use vitamin c in your morning routine and retinol at night, easy!

I made this vitamin C serum as per your instructions. I substituted Isoamyl myristate in place of cocoate and squalene in place of silicone gel as I could not get hold of the two ingredients. My serum is watery and L- ascorbic acid has settled down. I followed all the instructions. What could be the problem and how to settle it please let me know. I made 10 percent vitamin C concentration

Wow…..not everyone has time to do this. For those who do, might as well make it a hobby if you love the activity. You learn in the process too. For myself, instead of buying all the separate ingredients that I don’t even have on hand, I’d much rather buy one product with everything already in it.

this one will last a week at most until vitamin c degrades.

L-ascorbic acid doesn't oxidize until it encounters water, which is precisely why this formulation contains absolutely no water. It'll last years without oxidizing-and you can be confident it hasn't because L-ascorbic acid turns orange when it oxidizes. I'm far from the inventor of this approach; The Ordinary sells a similar product for exactly the same reason :)

Silicone, really?? I make my own stuff NOT to have things like this in it...

Silicones are safe, non-irritating, transepidermal water loss reducing, vegan, hypoallergenic, moisturizing, and non-toxic. There's a lot of myths out there about silicones, but they're great ingredients. I highly recommend reading this post from LabMuffin to learn more: labmuffin.com/silicone-mythbusting-with-video/. You certainly don't have to use silicones in your skincare products, but don't avoid them because you believe lies about them :)
