My younger brother & I were kids seeing this in the theater with our mom. When Clark jumped across in front of the train, she was horrified and leaned over whispering admonishingly "Don't you EVER try that!!!" We found this funny as a) we weren't complete morons, b) there weren't any trains within 20 miles of our house and c) umm, err, we were already in trouble for trying to imitate Evel Kenievel on our bikes --- come to think of it, maybe we were complete morons who actually needed that warning after all.

I love how this movie messes around with time and genre in JUST the right ways. In the scene where the Kents encounter toddler Kal El in the crashed pod, they are driving a 30s era truck and wearing clearly late 30s - MAYBE 40s clothing styles. (Superman debuted in 1938) In this clip and the rest of the section with teenage Clark in Smallville it's very clearly the mid-late 50s. (Silver Age depictions of Smallville and/or Superboy - though that iteration of Clark doesn't actually appear as such in this film) And then the movie does a time and genre jump again past the Fortress of Solitude sequence and we land in 70s Metropolis (New York). (Modern - for that time - Superman) And each of these bits is filmed ever so slightly differently. Different lenses. Different lighting. Taking care to evoke the correct period. It is most definitely DELIBERATE. The director was clearly purposefully evoking the entirety of Superman style and canon from his emergence in 1938 through the classic Silver Age up through what and how Superman was being portrayed in the comics in the 70s when this movie debuted. It's "comic book time" in a comic book movie! And they DARE us to believe in it all and believe in the myth of Superman - in the real world. And the genius of it all is that it WORKS. Every bit of it!

I saw it as a little kid in the 80s too, and I actually always thought it was a very impressive special effect. Most speed running shots both past and present are just a cheapo blur effect, or the really cheap Six Million Dollar Man running effect they did on a TV budget in the 70s at the same time of this movie. This shot from 1978 was creative, yes nobody would put an actor on wires hanging from a truck today, but that's what they did back then. They even got Clark's shadow on the ground, to make it clear he wasn't superimposed on the scene. I never could figure out how they did this shot until I saw the behind the scenes documentary, I just figured they sped the actor up and spliced it with the train.

*Not* sure *if* it was the product of its time, but the way Clark runs compared to how people actually run looks really weird, funny, and stupid, no one runs like that.

Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look, up the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!

Was the music from the car altered? For what I remembered, it originally played "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets.

They changed the music on the car radio. The original movie had Rock Around the Clock playing. Here they inserted a studio band playing what sounds like TV show rock from 1966. Rock wasn't part of old TV shows. Once in a while a scene needed a radio playing "that modern music the kids are into." But you'd hear what sounded like a half a big band with more horns than guitars playing go-go style music. Just cheap, side music to tell you "there's rock music playing," but it just messes up a good scene.

John Williams composed a couple of pieces of source music, short cues of generic '50s rock in case they didn't want to pay for the Bill Haley song.

And with the original version of the scene playing “Rock Around the Clock”, I wonder if it was meant as a very subtle reference to Blackboard Jungle (which the song debuted in), which starred Glen Ford…who plays Pa Kent in Superman, seen just as the kids are about to drive off here.

Plot/Logic inconsistency. If little Lois saw a superfast kid, why wouldn't she have mentioned it after seeing/hearing about Superman?

Because saving Lois when she fell from the helicopter was Superman's first use of powers in public. Imagine falling from a building only to be saved by a mysterious and handsome flying man? I don't think a recollection from her youth was anywhere near what she was thinking, especially when the trauma/excitement from this experience had her fainting.

Yeah that's why it got cut out because it didn't make sense. But for the Expnanded Edition Donner made that get put back it. Although for 1978 this "plothole" is nothing compared to turning time back and the earthquake. I mean granted people in those days generally only saw movies in theatres and on tv so plotholes weren't really a problem until vcrs became a thing. It is interesting though that WB put all this trouble to counter the bootlegging over the TV Cut and yet they still haven't gone to the trouble of "fixing" Superman IV. If they put the deleted scenes back in and fixed the affects the movie is watchable.
