If someone was blind and relied on sound to see, wouldn't background noise make it harder to see clearly, not easier? Like, echolocation works by sending out sound signals and seeing how long it takes for the sound waves to rebound back to you, so background noise would only get in the way of that and conflict with your own sound waves, right?
@M7S4I5L8V2A6 жыл бұрын
At first it may be like the Daredevil movie where Mat Murdock first gets his echo-location. However I would assume it's like normal hearing where you can pick out certain noises and tune others out like your own heart beat.
@WoodlandDrake6 жыл бұрын
No, shutup though, Daredevil does it!
@athenatheshewolf6 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that the sound waves from the background noise would serves as 1. Landmarkes and 2. Give extra feedback/information regarding the location of things. For example, if you hear music playing in the other room, the wall will muffle it, so would anything in front of it, etc. I think if the background noise was loud enough it would disrupt his ability to hear the clicks he makes. (His name is Ben Underwood.) I haven't watched his documentary but maybe he addresses that.
@megasartshack6 жыл бұрын
realism often doesn't make for good game design.
@chadschmaltz97906 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but also consider how people can adapt and enhance the other senses when one is no longer available. Many people who became blind or deaf claim that their other senses grew much more acute after they lost their hearing or sight. So for someone like Ben who learned to use echolocation, he probably became so familiar with the noise he would make that it would "stand out" against the background noise. If you have ever had a friend with a very distinct voice and were at a busy location like a mall or a cafateria; did you notice how their voice seems to cut through the crowd noise? I imagine that echolocation for Ben worked in a similar fashion.

I'm thinking the stuff involving the orphanage and other places without blind powers means that guy was recently blinded, and that orphanage stuff is flashbacks.
@gaminggoddess856 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly (spoilers for the ending) The whole game is the guy using some kind of VR machine to relive all the good memories he has of his dead wife forever and ever. So there's no real justification for the blindness gimmick or the evil babies and children as far as I can tell, unless I've missed something. Could be traumatic memories of their dead kid are bleeding into his recordings or something I guess.

This is exactly like what happned during the Great Herring War. Between the Lindstroms and the Johansons. The two families controlled the most fertile herring waters off the coast of Norway, so naturally it would seem to be in their best interests to band together. Oh boy was that a mistake. You see, they couldn't agree on what do to with the herring! The Johansons wanted to pickle the herring and the Lindstroms wanted to train them for the circus. Sort of like Seaworld, only smaller. Much much smaller, but bigger than a flee circus. They shot a herring out of a canon only once, but they shot him into a tree. After that no other herring would do it. My grandfather told me that story. Although he always used to call me by my sisters name, and occasionally we wore his underpants on the outside of his pants.

Fun fact - There's actually a blind man who uses echolocation to see! His name is Daniel Kish, and while it isn't like this game(which seems to have a protagonist with only partial blindness?) he's still able to hear reflected sounds when he clicks his tongue and makes a mental image of his surroundings. He currently works to teach other blind folks to use echolocation as well. There's actually been a few humans who have been able to use echolocation, including Lucas Murray, a student of Daniel Kish, Kevin Warwick, who isn't blind, but has a sweet nickname("Captain Cyborg") Juan Ruiz, who is able to ride a bike with echolocation, and also has a sweet nickname("Electro Man") and the kid that Pat mentioned here, Ben Underwood, who unfortunately died when he was 16, but was able to play basketball, football, rollerblade, and skateboard even with his blindness. In fact, he was the first person who used echolocation I ever learned about. R.I.P. Ben. Here's the wiki page on it - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation
