The character models look really good, it's the environments that are bland. You can tell where the budget went. Explaining the opening scene: Gene going "water" is a reference to the opening of Fist of the North Star, where Ken wanders into a desert like city exhausted from lack of water. Then the rest is meant to be banter between Gene and Olivia, but since we know nothing of the context it comes off as just weird. The game's story and dialogue is mostly well done, and is quite humorous.

The way Pat describes this game makes it sound like it's a paradox. It's not "so bad it's good;" it's bad, but still really good. It's reviled, but everyone loves it. It controls terribly, as it can't really be compared with any game, but somehow works once you crack the code and figure out how to style on everyone. I've never been so confused. Edit: it somehow reminds me of P.N.03, but instead of shooting, you're punching and kicking.

IGN hates it because they are terrible at it, and you can see in their review that they didn't pass the first mission, since all screenshots they have are from mission 1. The controls are different to other games, but they are great, not terrible. The backgrounds do look quite bad, but the character models and animations are very good for the PS2 era (people said GTA looked good, but God Hand looks bad, I just don't get it... GTA looks like shite in comparison)

+hardcoreviolenceshow In Pat's case of saying this game looks bad, I sometimes get the impression that he forgets PS2 is a console instead of a computer that can have its components upgraded to handle more graphically-intensive games. On consoles the graphics tend to peak after devs figure out just how much they can squeeze out of the hardware. If he really wants to see an ugly PS2 game there's plenty, like Herdy Gerdy or Stretch Panic.

I think the PS2 Silent Hill and MGS games look a lot better and were closer to "realistic". They still hold up pretty well. They're obviously dated, but at least the environments aren't nearly as boring (except MGS 2, but that's just my opinion).

MGS2 was in that awkward stage of "well we got this technology now let's see what we can do with it" but at least KojiPro really blew graphics out of the water with MGS3. Snake Eater's graphics are up there with Kingdom Hearts' graphics when it comes to smooth polished models and textures in a PS2 game

Agreed (except the Kingdom Hearts thing because I don't know really know what it looked like). My biggest issue with MGS 2 graphics is that there was this weird look to it as though everything was "coloured" but not "textured" mixed with the Big Shell just being an area that didn't really provide much visual variety, unlike MGS 3's military base in a forest / mountain wilderness. I still love the Silent Hill games for how nice their designs of gore and "urban decay" are though. Not to mention I still think the character models for 3 and 4 look really good.

Easy doesn't actually affect the game in a meaningful way though. All it does is stop the games scaling difficulty from ever going to lvl Die. So while the game will never get to it's hardest state, that doesn't matter as most people probably wouldn't do good enough to even get to lvl Die on a regular basis. On the flipside, all Hard mode does is lock the game to lvl Die permanently. Nothing else changes. Enemy placements, mechanics, damage they do/take, are set in stone regardless of difficulty you select.

I was very close to beating this on Hard. And then my brother moved out and took the PS2 :( This is one of those games that if you get realllllly in a zone it just transcends into something magical. Figuring out how to exploit your moveset is key as you get through that. Man, I wish I could have captured some of my gameplay from back then. REMASTER THIS!!!!

Finally. This and news of Metal Wolf Chaos makes this week a good one. Really enjoyed Okami but this is hands down the most fun I’ve had out of the Clover/Platinum games. MadWorld had a sort of vaguely similar control scheme but just was not the same.
