So you talk about how the X-Files were inspired by "Twin Peaks" (which it certainly did influence it) but there is actually another show that had a much larger pull. There was a series back in 1974-1975 starring Darren McGavin (the father from "A Christmas Story") called "Kolchak: The Nightstalker". McGavin played as an investigative reporter who constantly got mixed up in supernatural stuff and in the end always had to solve things. Some of the episodes were pretty silly, but there were others that were pretty scary.

As long as we're talking television here, the series that Pat was discussing at the beginning was called "Red Shoe Diaries", it was created by Playboy I think as their way of getting in on the whole cable television action that was blowing up at the time. The weird part was that the premise of the show was supposed to be about Duchovny's character being depressed because his wife had killed herself over being "sexually stifled" or something like that so he would contact women through personals to hear their sexy stories as a way of trying to 'understand her pain'... Which isn't exactly what I would call 'sexy', and yet somehow they still managed to turn every episode into a borderline porno. Ah well, each to their own, I guess.

Tank controls exist as a work around to a technical limitation. Big detailed environments were hard to render, so they just used fixed angles and pre-rendered environments. Now, that's not a technical necessity, it's a style choice, and I'd argue it's not worth the awkwardness that comes from the controls.

Buddy Buddy A game shouldn't get it's tension from being dysfunctional. Now, Alan Wake isn't a phenomenal game, but you had functional dodging and movement controls. In a RE game, that kind of ability would make the game too easy, but the game was designed to be able to match you. Yeah, you could duck and sidestep, but the monsters could keep coming for you and try and intercept you. Having 10 varied enemy types with different abilities between you and the light post that will protect you and having to try and get through them without getting your head hacked off and only having 3 pistol bullets... now that is genuine tension. Trying to drive two tanks past each other in a hallway and calling it tense is stupid.

Within the X-Files universe, it makes sense for an X symbol on a window to be a save point, since in the series it's the main method of summoning X, who is an informant/assassin who helps Mulder. I had the first one, the point and click adventure, now I was born in 1993, and it was my mum's game because she liked the show, but I still gave it a few goes because back then point and clicks were new to me and I grew a love of them. Tank controls were used in a lot of the classic survival horror games. It a control scheme that is tied to the position of the character instead of the camera angle. They made them like that because those games had a lot of fixed camera angles that would change a lot so it helped the controls stay consistent with the shifting camera.
