In Japanese: 4 = Shi Death = Shin So level 4 = Level die.

On the note of what difficulty settings actually mean, Megaman 2 has Normal and Difficult. Normal was added in the US release. Difficult is simply just the standard difficulty for the original version. So yep gotta make the easy version for the babies over at the US. In case people don't remember, God Hand's level affect enemy aggression. I believe level DIE is offscreen enemies will attack you with increased aggression and at the same time.

Lvl 1-3 are basically the same with bloated damage numbers and increased aggression, lvlDIE gives them new moves, increases the speed of enemy attacks, makes them impossible to launch/trip unless you counter/stun/guard break them, and enemies block more often/Parry easier.

Though in the FF example I think it does make more sense calling the difficulty you'll encounter in the regular story mode game play "Normal". Yes it's the easier difficulty, but it's the normal difficulty of the game since it's the obligatory default setting your first time through.

I actually did a little digging and actually the naming system in Japanese for Normal, Hard, and Extreme trials is a prefix at the beginning of the name. So Garuda for example is "Garuda Annihilation Battle", "True Garuda Annihilation Battle", and then "Extreme Garuda Annihilation Battle." Ultimate is "Absolute" in JP.

Human:Become Detroit reminded me of a delicious bowl of Lobster Bisque. It's nice and hearty, seasoned well. There aren't as many chunks of lobster as you'd like, but the lobster in there is still delicious. You're enjoying it and you're down to the last few spoonfuls. And boom. Another example of difficulty that was changed during translation that I can think of is Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and it's sequel Radiant Dawn. In the original version, the difficulties were normal, hard, and lunatic. But for whatever reason, when it was brought overseas, the difficulty was changed to easy, normal, and hard, meaning that anyone who doesn't know that going in will likely play what is actually hard mode, thinking it's the standard difficulty.
