A video essay/critique on game of thrones season 6 where I look at why the season is so mixed. Some people think season 6 is outstanding with the Battle of the bastards and the trial of the seven, and others thinks it's bad because of the David and Dan's writing.

I originally thought that Jon Snow’s “plot armor” was part of the plot. He was the light bringer, the prince that was promised, yada yada yada. @@blaubeer8039 That's wrong. It is Tolkien, in that GRRM is on record clearly stating that Tolkien is his number one influence, and that the ending will be highly modeled on that of LOTR. The expectation is that defeating the white walkers will be the rough equivalent of the War of the Ring, followed by the Scouring of the Shireish battle at Kings Landing (the show got the rough events right, just executed them horribly). He is also on record saying that Jon is directly modeled on Frodo - who never got over the war and soon sailed into the Nor- I mean, West. Jon WILL save the world - and depart. Kts kinda a pet peeve and its not really important, but Rickon’s fate really pissed me off, as the last uncrippled son of Ned Stark his life was really important, and it makes no sense that the Umbers would turn him in since not only were they Stark loyalists, but they’d sheltered the kid for years. They probably took it from the published chapter of unpublished Winds of Winter. Spoiler alert! Arya is part of the acting crew. The play is about Tyrion making some sort of deal with the devil, killing his family in the process. As Tyrion is much darker character in the books, it is a very ironic. We are not sure who Arya plays, it could be Shae, some suggested Sansa (which would be wholesome).

Like dude, half of his family died through the series, watching his little brother getting killed was just too much, he had enough, he is no longer acting rationally, he just wants Ramsay's head no matter what. Other complaints are: "The plot armour", Up to this point on the series he was brought back "for a reason" (although ruined on season 8), he was obviously not going to die 6 episode later. And last but not least: "The "Deus Ex Machina"", The Lords of the Vale arriving to save the day is not a Deus Ex Machina, it was planted as a posibility the second Baelish mentioned them. Why didn't Sansa tell Jon? Ok fair enough, plot hole. But sometimes you need to accept a plot hole for a story to work, take Toy Story for example "Why does Buzz freeze if he doesn't know he is a toy?" BECAUSE OTHERWISE THERE'S NO FUCKING STORY! If Sansa tells Jon about them from the beginning and they just come and crush Ramsay's forces it would be FUCKING BORING. Seasons 7 and 8 are indefensible, but I still mantain that Battle of the Bastards and Winds of Winter are some of the best episodes on GoT, and also the last great episodes.

Well, interestingly the Bran story kind of mirrors the great Sept explosion: It looks really good, concludes/furthers an important storyline, but introduces massive difficulties for it's continuation. My thing with the Mereen resolution is that it pretty much glosses over the fact that since Season 4 Dany was clearly shown losing control over her dragons. It’s a big plot point in the book, one GRRM is building up to resolving. Here Dany returns to Mereen with Drogon completely under her control and the other two who have been chained up and haven’t seen her in over a season break loose and join in on the carnage without an on screen look on Dany actually seeking out them. We never have any scenes in the show of Dany training any of them, they just start to magically do whatever she needs them to do. It especially bugs me because this unresolved plot point could have been used to explain away the destruction of Kong’s Landing instead of turning her into the Mad Queen
@sabahmerchant1866
@sabahmerchant1866 Жыл бұрын
Your comment about training the dragons reminds me of HOTD and how they had a whole TEAM in the Dragonpit to look after the dragons and such. Dany struggling to control her 3 dragons would be interesting too in terms of having her think about her ancestors and wondering how THEY did it, giving her a feeling of loss for a heritage she’s never known. It would add so much to her character as the last known Targaryen and how she’s finding herself (after all, in the books, she’s barely 16 and hasn’t had a stable home in forever)

The entire season kinda missed what made GOT's writing so good in the first place. There weren't really any consequences to a character's stupid choices. I remember thinking Jon leaving the Nights Watch or Arya leaving the faceless men would really come back and bite them in the ass, but no. Just like five years of Jon's life and it was never mentioned how he kinda abandoned his post lmao. They just wanted to brush everyone to where the plot wanted them to be without doing so in an organic way.
@HighAdmiral
@HighAdmiral 2 жыл бұрын
... abandoned his post? His vows are sworn for life. He died, thus nullifying them. Besides, a law is only a law as long as it's enforced. @RandomsPage

@@HighAdmiral this explanation doesn’t work because the northern lords don’t even know that he died. No one bothers to ask why he left his post, which should be huge deal in the story, and absolutely should have come up when Jon was begging for support in the north. To the lords, it looks like Jon just up and left the wall and abandoned being lord commander to fight familial wars, which is fine for a character choice if it has consequences (like what happens in the books) , but what makes no sense is the northern Lords never even acknowledge this. Not a single lord is like “hey weren’t you lord commander? Why did you leave?” It’s like the northern lords “kind of forgot that desertion is a death sentence” and the writers just want the audience to kind of forget about it too.

The show was doing so good up until the last 2 seasons. I get that they wanted to wrap it up and didn't want to take the time it would take to properly flesh out each characters ending arch, but even in a summerized version, it could have been so much better. Dan and Dave did a great job following the books, when they still had source material. And I'm sure they tried their best to give an ending they believed was true to where the books were going. But they also HAD to have known, that they were rushing and that fans would be disappointed. Given that they announced the last 2 seasons would be the shortest seasons of all. I think they basically said "F*** it" and just wanted to be done with it. "We made the biggest show of all time, even if we botch the ending we will still have a guarantee of millions of dollars and any writing job we ever want after this"....well, not really. Lol yes they still have so much money that they'll never have to work again if they don't want to. But because of such bad reviews regarding the last season, neither one of them have gotten any significant work since then. Which just goes to show that they themselves were NOT good show writers. They were just good at adapting someone else's good writing. But once they ran out of source material and had to do some writing on their own, they screwed it up. Such a shame. ESPECIALLY how they butchered Euron Greyjoy! Whom has already been confirmed as the next big bad after Ramsay and Joffrey. Just reading the preview chapters George Martin released from W.O.W, showcase Euron as the baddest/most evil villain yet! Worse then Ramsay, because not only is he as heartless and ruthless as Ramsay (if not more) but he's also a very well trained and seasoned warlord! He's the greatest naval commander in both westeros and Essos. He's even got a dragon horn, which is what he really uses to petition Dany, NOT just a thousand ships and "his big C*ck" like the show said. They basically turned him into a douchebag, egotistical frat boy, because they didn't want to spend the time making him into the devil on earth, like he is in the books. One sample chapter GRRM released STRONGLY hints to the theory that Euron is going to summon a literal kraken! I agree that this season was very hit or miss. But there's a few things I don't fully agree with. The Bloody Hand play: I didn't think i'd be hearing fart jokes in game of thrones but whatever. I actually think the play is an interesting few scenes. It shows us a comedic retelling of the events of seasons 1-4 (the good seasons) but with clear bias. We know that Ned Stark wasn't a bumbling idiot and that Tyrion didn't poision Joffrey but the public doesn't. Of course they'd think Ned Stark betrayed the crown. He said so himself and it's the story the Lannisters would peddle. And Tyrion was found guilty of killing Joffrey so yeah that's probably the official story. At this point I don't think even we knew who did it for certain. Little Finger and Olenna both said they did but I don't think we knew for sure who it was until S7 E3. And so, of course it's painful for Arya to watch because she knew her father wasn't a traitor and to hear everyone laughing at him would be hard to endure. Bastard Bowl: I have a lot of problems with this. The story beats that lead to the battle are really good and it makes sence. The conflict between Jon and Ramsey felt good and real. But the battle itself was very flawed. Firstly, Ramsey's men shooting arrows in the air for them to rain down? Does not work. It's a common movie trope but that doesn't mean it isn't stupid. If you shoot an arrow in the air, when it reaches the top of its arc, it has lost all of the energy given to it by the bow, so the only energy it has now is the potential energy from its height and mass, which is almost none since arrows are so light. Second, just having all the cavalry charge straight at each other? Why would you waste so many men? Third, Why did the Bolton men with the shields and spears do nothing until they could form a circle around Jon's forces? They should have been in the front line to stop Jon's cavalry charge. And the fact they could just surround Jon's forces with no resistance is ridiculous. Fourth. Wun Wun was so underused. Having a giant on your side would be such a huge advantage. Even without a weapon (Which he should have had by the way, a club would be perfect) a charging giant would be nearly unstoppable. It's not like cavalry where if the spearmen stand their ground, they can stop the cavalry charge. That won't stop a giant. Imagine him running at full speed and delivering a huge kick to the enemy, ranks instantly broken. Once again, when they were surrounded, he could have kicked straight into their shields and made an opening. Or even tried to jump on them or something. Yes, he does break down the gates and get a sad death but still. Fifth, Sansa not telling Jon about the Knights of the Vale. I know he already talked about it. Dumb and Dumber wanted their own Rohirrim moment and couldn't think of a better way to do it. They still could have been kept in reserve for a surprise attack and Ramsey didn't need to know about them. If he knew the Knights of the Vale were there, he may not have met Jon in the field and then it would have been nearly impossible for them to win. The Great Sept Expolsion: Great scene but I don't think it's season 6's fault that there was no fallout to the event. It season 7's fault that the whole even was just forgotten about.

amen! the giant being used as an arrow magnet and battering ram really bothered me. They had time to put hides over wood. Could've been an opportunity to showcase Ramsey being a crafty commander. They think the giant should help them turn the fight or that he won't know the giant is fighting, then Ramsey lures them into a trap, something. It's so aggravating to watch, it's like a terrible disney action movie where all the characters single-file run out into no man's land for no reason firing their weapons into empty air in slo-mo while the show's theme plays and they somehow kill everything around them. Every third shot of the bastard battle was a character (supposedly seasoned in war) breaking ranks to save a buddy who broke ranks to save a buddy who broke ranks.... It's so ridiculous, on par with Daenerys alt+F4-ing her cavalry for no real reason in the beginning of/before the night-king battle.

For fecks sake, the entire economy is agrarian. More populace = bigger army. Or you can acquire a bigger army + mercenaries. And besides there wouldn't be a need of this idiotic plot point if they had simply addopted Stannis's crusade from the Fifth book, intsead of killing him off in that retarded way. Jon being king... I beg your pardon, WOT?!? Sansa is right there the only legitemate child of Eddard Stark, who has the army of the Veil and instead as a king was decided that Jon should fufil the role - a man that slept with a wildling, a man that is a friend of the wildling smth, a whole thing that wasnt talked about, and most importantly a man that had left the night's watch, who almost lost the battle because he decided to rush. Cersei being crowned... this is so stupid on so many levels I am not even going to waste my time discussing this shit Season 6 was just a bad fanfic of the books and the idiotic choices made in season 5 - killing off Stannis and giving his plotline to Jon, killing Baristan and just abandoning the East, Butchering the entire Dornish theatre which would evolve in Ellaria just killing of Doran and somehow no one having problem with that like no one, everyone was ok with that, fucking up the faceless men, and the three eyed crow degrading in whatever those time travel plot points were/Fanfic.

Jon was relieved of his duties in Night s watch when he died. But not many people must be aware of his resurrection. This was unaddressed. I never really saw Sansa as ruler material.For most, she was just the character that was abused by Joffrey and like or manipulated by lil finger( another wasted character). Cersei becoming Mad queen was fine but further seasons made her seem like dumb queen.Jamie not killing her, still baffles me. I think one of the biggest things with Sansa holding out information to Jon is that she makes him accept her apology for how she treated him when they were younger. This doesn't make it any better for the sake that Sansa wanted to build up the trust for Jon. The other thing I wanted to point out with the Sept Explosion is that Cersei knew how much Margaery meant to Tommen. Sure, she might've not realized that Tommen would do something so hasty, but at the same time, she actively knows that Tommen cared for her deeply. I feel like for the sake of her character, it would've only been a last resort if she realized the results.

Cersei becoming Queen Regnant was a really big cliffhanger cause as she was a really interesting & unpredictable character you were wondering What would have happened later. But I agree about the consequences of the Sept. D&D could have added some dialogues of People being scared of Cersei or Angry at her and we could have had through her spies that then would have reported Everything back to her. They could have also added a scene where someone would have tried to kill Cersei but Jaime or the Mountain stepped in or smth to show that the were some that still care

It’s infuriating because while it makes sense to for Cersei to suffer consequences, she was also handed the perfect distraction on a platter with the North seceding and Daenerys invading. All she had to do was say “Targaryen spies killed your beloved King, Queen and High Sparrow, help support me against their invasion”. Even Jaime could confirm that the wildfire had been put there by Aerys. It’s sad I can think of better plot point on a YT comment than the writers who were paid thousands to actually make the show.

Great video, can’t wait for the season 7 analysis. I remember forums where they really believed the cracks and decrease in quality started season 7🤣🤣🤣

Great video, really enjoying the GoT content that is taking a critical eye at the series after its completion. Gives me nostalgia for a show I was really invested, while validating my feelings of disappointment about the later seasons lol
