The best positive review for this film I have ever seen as it doesn't feel like the typical review I have seen for this film in which it is just the reviewer saying the same recycled shit like "it is fun" or "it is a comic book come to life" and the worst of the bunch "it knows exactly what it wants to be" and now I have a slightly better understanding on why a lot of people like this film, even if I am still not a huge fan of it. No wonder you are my favourite reviewer online, Cap.

This film has satisfying interactions between all the Avengers throughout! You see them all clash with one another physically or mentally at some point, and then it's really awesome when they all finally come together. And if you want to see any of these heroes shine, they all get to, and a number of times. Loki again, is very good as the main, or focused on villain in this film. It's always great to hear him manipulate others and to see how he uses his diseptive abilities, like the one he used to imprison Thor in the jail and death trap SHIELD had him held in, by his choice of course. I also really like how he was slowly pushing each soon to be Avenger a bit more and more, to have them infighting. Loki and the Chitauri secretly with Thanos behind it too were great choices to have the Avengers all come together and battle for their first film as a team. Plus, knowing for sure that Thanos was involved by the end credits is an exciting way to wrap this film all up and have you excited for what's to come. I wouldn't say Agent Coulson was a very beloved character by me but the way his characterization and death were done here I feel were a great way to motivate most of the heroes to focus, and feel the gravity of the situation, aside from all that Loki was able to do as their prisoner. I also need to say, this is also a fantastic first outing for Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. All in all, it's a 9/10. My main complaint is this had amount 5-10 minutes too much action. And yeah a lot of what's here is great but in this case, a bit less is more. Also, I didn't really like Captain America's suit in this, especially when we've had a number of fantastic-looking ones before and after this film. I wouldn't say it's awful either, but it stands out among his main combat suits. Besides that, it's definitely the right colors to be among all the other unique heroes and their designs.

Great and insightful review. You brought up a lot of points that I've noticed on my various rewatches. There were some nit picky things that I disagreed with (the Natasha party line for example), and if you look closely the nuclear explosion that went off in space was about to come through the portal so closing it as soon as possible was a good move. Can't wait for when you eventually do Age of Ultron in a few years. Green Lantern should be a lot of fun. I'm bringing popcornXD.

One of the greatest movies of our generation. A milestone for all fans of comics. Marked the definitive entry of comic books into mainstream audiences. No longer the stuff of nerds. Now take that, below-average moviegoers! You will never know as much about this Universe than us. This Cinematic Universe is intended for US, the longtime fans, not for you, who came late to the party. Its OUR reward. Yes, I'm talking about you who only after the SEVENTH MCU movie has learned to wait until the end credits scene. You, who thinks that you know a fuckton of shit about this just because you've seen a bunch of moviesin the span of 8 years. You, who has just learned who Thanos is. You are only here to bankroll the whole thing and throw money at Marvel Studios, while we see this modern mythology depicted on-screen. We are entitled to this. You're not.

I never got the "Loki is just watching" complain. Where exactly is Loki supposed to go? Unlike Thor, he can't fly, and he is on a very small plateau high up in the mountain. What is he supposed to do, jump? It is pretty clear to me that Thor brought him to exactly that place because there he could talk to him without having to worry that Loki uses one of his illusions and escapes.

Love the review, Cap. Excellent work, as always. Oh, lord. "Green Lantern"... Over at Warner's, they keep saying, "Hey, that dark, heavy, realistic-tone worked for one character, let's do it for everyone. Superman, too!" "Here the pitch, guys! So Green Lantern is about an alien cop with a pseudo-magic ring who fights evil monsters from outer space!" "Wow, sounds exciting. Promising, too. So, what's the movie about?" "None of that. At all. Ever." "... Why?" "Because that's totally unrealistic and too silly, child-friendly stuff. No one would buy that. What, are comic books primarily written for children? Grim-dark, guys! Grim-dark!" "Umm..." "What?" And they still don't understand why that picture didn't work.

Although a bit contrived, the battle between Thor and Iron Man, I thought, was one of the coolest scenes in the entire film. Yes, it was forced, and maybe out of place. But it did serve the old school/ nostalgia idea of superhero vs. superhero. And man, what a bad-ass battle it was.

I'm glad Captain Logan touched on the fact Avengers was just as much a set up film, as a payoff film. Despite the stand alone films, the very idea of the Avengers still needs to be introduced, so it really is a origin story in disguise. Theres a reason Ultron hits the ground running and seems so jampacked in comparison. Also interesting is CL speaks about how watching newer installments to the MCU gives more context and dimension to other films and their themes. I saw subtle hints to Civil War in Avengers and Winter Solider also payed off those themes even more while also introducing themes related to Ultron. Everyone complains that Ultron didn't do a enough to set up Civil War, but I strongly disagree. Marvel's been working towards Civil War since Avengers and there was HEAVY nods to Civil War in Ultron. You really think all of the destruction caused by Ultron and the fact Tony is responsible won't have ramifications relating to Superhero accountability?
@ConorCarlisle9 жыл бұрын
what do you think of the idea that everything that happened in Avengers happened exactly the way Loki wanted it to? We know that at the end of Thor 2 Loki faked his death and somehow usurped the throne away from Odin. We also know that the Infinity Gauntlet is in Odin's Vault. What if Loki planned to be defeated and he's still working for Thanos? What if Thanos and Loki's true plan was to find Loki a way back into Asgard so Loki could deliver the Gauntlet to Thanos and in exchange Loki gets to rule Asgard?

Brilliant review as always, although I personally would've given it a 3.5. While this isn't the best movie in the MCU, I personally think it's the most fun. When I initially saw this movie, the only other MCU movie I had seen was the first Iron Man, so I was lost as a one eyed camel in a sandstorm. Now, having seen every film in the MCU, I still find it to be my favorite. Side note, is there a reason the Kick-*** review isn't in the superhero rewind playlist other than the fact it has a swear sword in the title and you don't like swearing on the channel (which, by the way, makes you the only channel on KZbin I can watch without a pair of headphones, and given how brilliant the analysis you and your friends bring to these movies is, I really appreciate that.) I cannot wait for your Iron Man 3/Dark Knight Rises/Arkham Origins review! Knowing their release dates and your 2 year policy, I wouldn't be surprised if they were in that order. Keep up the good work, Captain Logan. The Geekvolutionaries salute thee!

Great review. The only thing I might disagree with is Cap's take on the forest skirmish. I didn't feel it was contrived. Thor had never interacted with the other Avengers,and being a prince of Asgard,his somewhat haughty attitude towards just taking Loki seemed in his character. Also Loki cannot fly and there was little he could do but scramble aimlessly over hill and dale. Cap,Tony and Fury all mention Loki's seemingly "too easy" compliance, so it's not as if the film glosses over it.

Like your take on The Dark Knight, this was a very thoughtful and thorough review. And I appreciate that a major chunk of it was spent on critique and analysis rather than just easily gushing about the payoff of buildup from Iron Man. Like Age of Ultron, which I enjoyed, but to a lesser extent than The Avengers, it's a fun film, but on repeated viewings, you start to notice the flaws. And it wasn't one of those 'Oh, but it's a superhero movie' situations where you try to put that aside and just enjoy the ride- no, these things can and should still be examined critically. Brief question, Cap: though this wasn't a Banner film, what did you think of Mark Ruffalo's performance in this film since taking over from Edward Norton?
@xanderclint32899 жыл бұрын
Hmm I re-watched the Avengers the other day and considering that the movie was mostly involving juggling acts between 4 different characters universes and themes, I would say this seems fairly underrated. As a matter a fact, I'd say aside from a few small issues you brought up, (which many of actually have justifications or explanations for) this movie executes almost exactly what it sets out to be. I see this as more of the perfect have fun while making it look effortless type of movie. Consider what the movie is trying to do, and how well it achieves it.

Fantastic review man! Love the thematic analyses regarding Tony's heart. I thought we were done with that in Iron Man one and two. Apparently not! At the risk of nit picking, Thor decides that Captain America can take his hammer blow because of the Cap's massive leap from a tall tree. Watch that bit again, consider that Thor has just thought someone else brightly coloured and powerful and that Cap is addressing Thor with authority and bravery, indications that he is powerful enough to enforce his command. That being said, well done! The best part of this vid was your assessment of Whedon's task. He is a great director and writer and people will only appreciate him fully when the world no longer has him. But then, that's the way of all legendary folk, right? Peace :)

One thing I don't get in this film is Iron Man at the end, falling back through the portal back to earth. I'm no physicist but seeing as how he is in deep space with the nuke giving him a tonne of forward momentum (which would not dissipate as there is no resistance in space) how does he fall back to earth? Is the Earth's gravitational pull strong enough to drag him through? If so then also wouldn't the vaccuum of space create such a pressure difference that the massive updraft would keep him from falling back though?
@nathanhickman17239 жыл бұрын
Rodney Henriquez I agree. The few justifications I can come up with are that either the explosion or radiation pushed him through, or that his modular armor pieces, which he jettisons in the opposite direction, provide enough thrust to push him to the Earth's gravitational sphere of influence.

This is the first superhero rewind I've watched (aside from the Batman 66' top 10), is there somewhere that I can get a full version of the "ba ba ba badada" theme?
Constructive thoughts: Dark Energy is what he states (not dark magic), which is a reference to the energy we don't know anything about in current astronomy, which seems to force the universe to expand faster ( kind of negative energy, which would be needed to create wormholes, if possible ). I think what was going on with the "hero fight" was that the tesseract could exert some influence on those around it even when not " controlling their hearts". It's shown that those in close proximity to the tesseract seem to be more on edge and have their less attractive personality traits brought to the surface. Stark is more sarcastic and "Starky". Banner is more irritable. Captain America is perhaps more jingoistic and convinced of his own altruism , which makes him more judgemental of others he sees as not measuring up to his own personal code.. Fury is more apt to exert influence and manipulate the others. Natasha seems more capable of resisting and that may be due to her past of having to throw off years of conditioning and brain washing.

I think your opinion of these characters as moral people is a bit higher than mine... I had no problem believing that they would act like jerks to each other when Thor first arrives, and I DO think that "they needed the push" of Coulson's death to really forget their egos and do what's necessary in the final act so powerfully. But maybe that's because I don't read the comics? And I never got the problem with the aliens dropping once the mothership thing is blown up. It fits the 'control' theme, and it makes the movie much stronger and more satisfying emotionally. I had a much bigger problem with the ending of the fight in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', when I had to see Falcon fighting some bad guy I don't care about, and then watched everyone escaping the collapsing buildings in really tedious ways, after the fight was done. I prefer the plot conveniencies in 'The Avengers' over the pointless destruction porn in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'.

Great review, and I think the score is fair (though maybe a 3.5 for me). Avengers 1 really is an interesting film. It's not deep nor is really that cerebral and has a simple story, but like Raiders of the Lost Ark and the first Star Wars film, it's a thoughtful and inspiring character piece for how these different and interesting individuals come together and go on this memorable adventure in this fun and colorful world. In a way, yes, the films that came after definitely make this film a little better on repeat viewings and I do think Age of Ultron is a superior movie in some aspects, but I just can't hate or despise this movie for what it is. The movie is just so fun and colorful and I love the hell out of it, I've always wanted to see a fun and colorful comic book film on screen and this film definitely doesn't disappoint for me and I think it works a lot better as a season finale to a Season 1 of a show. As far as the naysaying goes, alot is valid, but I feel there's a bit of unfair criticism as the complaining goes from, "Oh, why isn't Loki Ledger Joker? Why isn't this dark? Why is there so much levity? I hate action movies that aren't gloomy." Maybe I'm generalizing but then I would bending over backwards toward snobs who keep calling people brain dead morons who don't know good film for liking or loving this movie. Don't get me started on the "Anti-Loki crowd" as I can't stand them considering Loki, after this film, became one of my favorite cinema villains.

I would say if The Avengers movie is another genre outside of just superhero, then it’s a disaster movie. The comic it’s based of, that being The Ultimates, is Independence Day but with superheroes as that was the intent. It’s also visually similar to Transformers Dark of the Moon that came out the year before.

Yay rewind is back! I enjoyed Avengers alot the first 2 times I saw it (both at the cinema) but for me personally it depreciates significantly with every subsequent viewing. Its at the point where I just skip to a couple of scenes (mainly thor v hulk and battle of NY) and ignore the rest. This is still however a better made and more coherent film than Age of Ultron, which I too enjoyed but don't foresee myself rewatching nearly as much.

Same for me, but not for the action. The humour just become so distracting and takes me out of the movie even after just a couple of viewings. This is actually my biggest problem with the MCU. Not only does joking in the middle of an action scene destroy tension and make the characters seem a bit crazy, but it becomes annoying after I've heard it before. This is why I was so dissappointed with the BvS Trailer #2 too. I was so excited when I heard that they were going to keep the humour more subtle and have a lot less of it. But I'm not so sure anymore, obviously there'll still be less of it and the film that seems to have a lot more of it has a pretty good reason for it (the film being Suicide Squad and the reason being that they are all crazy). I think the MCU films are better theater experiences, but the DC films are way better Blu-ray experiences and eventually they become better imo. For example, I loved The Avengers the first time I saw. It was my favourite Superhero movie until I saw it like the fourth time, but it's still my favourite theater experience ever. I thought MoS was pretty good the first time I saw it. I enjoyed it more than Batman Begins (I'm not as big of a TDK-trilogy fan as most seem to be), but that's it. But then I bought it on Blu-ray. I've now seen it about 16 times and it get better amd better everytime. Where as something like The Avengers get worse everytime I see it. Now I even like MoS more than most of the MCU films, where as first I thought it was on the level of the first Thor and Captain America movie. My biggest dissappointment ever in terms of film has probably been Age of Ultron. Simply because it was marketed as this dark film with Ultron as a menacing villain. I still liked it when I first saw it andbit was definitely a good movie, but I didn't like Ultron. Now I've gotten very excited for Civil War, but I've heard that even it'll have Cap and Widow quip in the middle of fights and Ant-Man joking a lot. Which dissappoints me. I'm just waiting for the MCU film that delivers to me what some of their trailers have promised. Well, there's always the Netflix shows which I love a lot. Sorry for the rant.

Never understood Cap and Starks stance against S.H.E.I.L.D. developing the advanced weaponry. They themselves either are, or utilize experimental weapons to fight evil. Kind of hypocritical to me.

Also, it's not really fair to blame Odin for the actions of Loki. It's like blaming Jor-El for the actions of Zod.

egodrive yes and not because Jor El and Zod are more to blame to kryptonian communist society and their lets bioengineer our member of society which result in individual trap in short sighted box thinking a guy who brilliant plan to save everything is shoot a baby into space so he can force a god into a another civilization and guy who can't pull of politics and resolves everything with militar actions

You know, there's one criticism that Captain Logan never brings up, or anyone else for that matter. Why does Loki know that Captain America is a man out of time? How does he know that? Loki's adoptive brother Thor, doesn't even know that.

John Earley He's already taken over Barton, who gave him all that intel about Black Widow. I wondered that myself but that's gotta be it. That certainly could have been made explicit but it's a reasonable assumption that Barton would have told him everything he knew about the rest of the Avengers, so he'd know who he was up against.

Geekvolution I never would've guessed that Barton learned about Captain Rogers's return. I guess those Shield guys knew pretty much everything, except for the fact that Hydra infiltrated their ranks...

John Earley I guess it didn't occur to me that SHIELD was keeping him a secret at this point, but we don't really know either way, do we?

I saw it twice at the cinema. Enjoyed it the first time but found it to be just 'meh' the second. I guess the novelty just wore off pretty quickly.

while it may be a bit simple in terms of plot and certians things may be happening just because it looks cool, this is my all time favirite movie because this is the most personal enjoyment I have ever gotten out of a film and the feeling of it creates of "this is the team coming together for the first time" can never be repeated.

I'm one the view who really didn't care for the movie. I don't think it's bad, but far from great. For any movie, but especially a movie that combines the styles of various characters, Avengers is some of the blandest out there. The directing and cinematography is one of a highly expensive TV movie rather than the epic cinematic experience The Avengers warrants. Even the final fight scene, which is heralded as epic, for me, is meh. I like the *thought* of a half hour mega-fight scene in a city with six heroes, but Whedon's lack of filmmaking experience with a lack of a thought out style makes it anticlimactic. Also, I think Whedon started the awful use of inserting a joke at major in a forced way to created a sense of levity while undercutting itself. The characters feel more like archetypes, especially how they speak in one-liners rather than natural dialogue.
