I think the whole thing with Batman having to chose to save either Harvey or Rachel was Joker killing two birds with one stone. It didn't matter who Batman saved, somebody was going to die. I believe if Rachel survived, Joker would've gone after her the same way he went after Harvey in TDK. The whole 'switching up the addresses' was to add extra salt in the wound for Batman if he failed to save Rachel. This Joker is pretty sadistic. Also, the whole Two-Face is just Harvey being able to flip on a dime (pardon the pun) personality wise. For the most part, he's a pretty decent guy. But when he gets angry (such as when he finds out the Joker is going to target Rachel), he lets you have it. That's the whole 'Two-Face" nickname (or rather where I think it comes from).
@Xehanort10

Yeah. I reckon Joker was always planning to set whoever survived loose on the city. I bet if Rachel had survived she'd have become convinced that Bruce had let Harvey die so he could have her to himself. And IMO Rachel would have killed Ramirez rather than just punching her like Harvey did after the coin came up on the unscratched side. Since Rachel trusted and was friends with Ramirez she'd have been pissed that she'd helped to have her and Harvey kidnapped and gotten Harvey killed. Her friendship with Gordon would have fallen apart too since Joker would have convinced her that it was Batman and Gordon going after the mob that caused everything since that's when the mob hired him even though Joker did everything he did by choice and had only let the mob hire him so he could use their resources to kill Batman then he'd kill them and take over the city as part of his "I'm going to prove that everyone in Gotham is as much of a monster as me" plan. It was only after Batman, Dent and Gordon caught Joker that he developed his obsession with Batman and found his twisted purpose in life.

Joker switched the addressed to create a scenario where Batman can’t win. If Batman wanted to save Harvey, he’d save Rachel, and Joker would win. If he wanted to save Rachel, he’d save Harvey, and Joker would win, which is what happened in the movie.

I still believe this is just too good of a movie to be simply labeled "the best comic-book/superhero movie", specially seeing what the genre has become after Marvel took over. This is masterful filmmaking by any standards. Above all fanboyism, this movie has defined modern cinema in a lot of unexpected ways, both good and bad. And it's not even my favorite movie in the Nolan trilogy.

On a technical and storytelling level, I think there’s a handful of problems. Weird editing choices, pointless scenes, exposition dialogue, uneven pacing, etc. Far from a masterpiece IMO

I think why Harvey was given the nickname "Two-Face" is because he has a temper that he hides from the public really well. We see this temper gradually get stronger as the film goes on first with the sneers at Gordon for using crooked cops, then he breaks into the police station to use the bat signal after a bust went wrong, then he kidnaps an arrested criminal and tortures him with a gun after Rachel goes missing, finally he's in full blown rage mode when the Joker visits him in the hospital wanting to strangle him and yelling out Rachel's name when the Joker couldn't remember.

The problem with the temper argument is that it isn't really set up in the movie all that well. For most of us it comes from our preconceived notion from Harvey seeing a therapist about his repeated outburst in the animated series.

I think another reason is that some people in the movie may have believed that a man as good as Harvey couldn't possibly exist, so they call him "Two Face" because they believe he has a dark side that he suppresses.

I have answers for your questions, and if they are redundant then I apologize. 1.) Why does the Joker lie. Here’s how the characters break-down for me: Harvey Dent follows the code of Gotham City, or the code of society. He doesn’t compromise this code for anyone until he becomes Two-Face. James Gordon follows the code of society too, but is willing to compromise it on a case by case basis. Batman completely ignores the code of society and chooses to follow his own personal code. The Joker has no code at all. So when he says “You have all these rules and you think they’ll save you. The only way to live in this world is without rules.” What he’s saying is, “you may follow your own code instead of the code dictated by society, but your code still limits your ability to do anything. It’s better not to have any code what so ever, like me.” So he presents Batman with a choice: Rachel or Dent. And Batman makes his choice justified by his own personal code. But he’s still following a code according to the rules that The Joker laid out for him. The Joker lies to make the point that he would have been able to save Rachel if he’d completely ignored the rules and thus his own personal code. 2.) Harvey Dent was an Internal Affairs investigator before running for the office of District Attorney. He was essentially a cop who investigated other cops. The cops considered him a traitor, or two-faced. In the first triad scene in front of the bat signal, Dent even correctly identifies Wuertz and Ramirez as dirty, but Gordon ignores him out of loyalty to his officers.

Yeah. Everything Joker does is him trying to say "My way to live is the only way to live. When he says "See I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve" what he's essentially saying is "These cops throw their code away when it's convenient for them and I'm better than them because I have no code whatsoever and there's nothing I won't do." That's why he says "You see their morals, their code. It's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show ya. When the chips are down these uh, these civilised people, they'll eat each other."

Regarding 'Harvey Two-face', I think saying one thing and doing another is kind of inherent in the job description for internal affairs, where Harvey worked before being DA. Obviously to do a job like that, you'd need to act like you're on their side (etc) when in actuality you're investigating them.
@ztyran
@ztyran 11 жыл бұрын
Firstly I think the Nickname is "Two-Face" Not "Harvey Two-Face", but I just nitpicking. As for the nickname itself, we learn that Harvey investigated nearly all the cops. So I think the name comes from him having cops testify against one of their own, then investigating the witness later which seems like a two-faced thing to do. Maybe I just reading too much into this, but that's what I came up with.

Incredible review. You're so good at this. Honestly, this is one of the greatest stories I've ever had the privilege to see unfold. The character of The Joker is hauntingly complex. The hospital scene is a personal favorite of mine. His speech on society and human behavior was just so thought provokingly introspective. I left the theater not only inspired by the sacrifices Batman had to endure for the greater good of the people, but also questioning my own philosophy. What a modern classic.

The way I interpreted the "Joker lying about Rachel and Harvey's location scene" is that the Joker wanted to bring the worst out of the people who are making Gotham a better place (The Batman, Harvey Dent and Jim Gordon). In this scene The Joker notices how easily Batman gets angry and aggressive towards him when he mentions that Rachel was also taken. Now, in the Joker's head he realizes that Batman and Harvey would both be devastated if Rachel died and thus making them lose hope in a way and make them easier to bring them down to his level, completely crushing them. Also Gordon relies on The Batman and Harvey to make Gotham a better place for him so if Harvey and Batman were to lose hope and had the Joker make them believe they lost, Gordon would also lose hope because he knows he can't save Gotham on his own. The Joker is just playing with people's emotions. He likes to experiment with people and see how much chaos it would create to society. So having said that, it is obvious that giving the Batman the wrong location would work to his advantage and slow all three heroes down to a halt basically, then escalate it almost immediately by threatening to blow up a hospital. Harvey would lose his love and all he cares about, The Batman/Bruce Wayne would also lose his love and childhood friend and Gordon would lose Harvey and Batman, Gortham's White and Dark Knight. The Joker is nothing more than a cruel, cunning, smart roller coaster of emotions. Best character ever.

This is a good explanation. He exploits weaknesses in everyone. With Gordon, it’s his strict adherence to justice and the rules, so he turns those rules upside down and slaughters GCPD officers by the truckload. With Dent, it’s his duality and underlying obsession with justice, so Joker twists his mind to the point of thinking that everyone should be lethally judged by a 50/50 flip of a coin. With Batman, it’s his refusal to sacrifice in the name of what has to be done. Batman won’t give up what he wants to accomplish what he needs, so Joker systematically removes pieces from the board and forces Batman to make impossible choices.

The two faced nickname was pretty straight forward. He used to work in internal affairs, where his main job was investigating crooked cops. As you stated Harvey was very well liked as an individual and in person. As you could also imagine, cops being investigated would hold contempt and anger for the person that is investigating them. Since Gotham is in no shortage of crooked cops, it's pretty easy to see a nickname like two face getting created for Harvey as initially he's all "buddy buddy" with you and then he ends up investigating and charging you with various criminal activities. I thought it was really straight forward, police always hate the people that work in internal investigations, just to reference look how they treat Matt Damon in 'The Departed' once his job is to investigate everyone and find the rat (which he is, unbeknownst to everyone else).

The scene with the two locations was Joker trying to prove to batman that he's not the morally superior person he perceives himself as being. Joker knows that the moral or ethical choice is to save the white Knight of Gotham, but he knows that Batman is just a human being and that human beings are hypocritical and selfish. He knows Batman has a personal affection for Rachel based on the scene of him leaping to save her. So he sets up a scenario where if Batman makes the selfish choice and goes to save Rachel, he'll prove to Batman that he's not the morally superior hero he makes himself out to be and make him realistically the reason Rachel dies. If Batman had been selfless and made the ethical decision, Rachel would've lived.

Quite possibly, the best review I've ever heard on this film and it brings back more reasons why I love this film so much. Almost kind of choked me up there at the end because again, you the hit the nail on the head completely on why this film inspired me so much. I think perhaps the Two Face name reference is because while he may seem like a genuine guy to the public, he's invading the police on their job with internal affairs...therefore interfering with how they do things. A two faced guy.

The set up to Harvey's fall from grace started the second he appeared on screen. He was righteous, yes. He was also arrogant, he showed that in the first courtroom scene. He was willing to play political games with the scene in the mayor's office, knowing that he couldn't hold that many people for very long, yet using how long he could hold them as a bargaining chip to the mayor. He also had poor impulse control, which he showed in the scene with the ambulance and the escaped Arkham inmate. Harvey Two Face? I can see that, I can see him saying one thing and doing another when it was expedient. Look what happened when the Joker finally gave him that one, fatal push... He wasn't a White Knight, they all just /thought/ he was.

An interesting thing that I found out while viewing the hospital scene, is that when Joker is at gunpoint you can see his finger holding the hammer. So even if the coin would have landed on its bad side Harvey wouldn't be able to shot The Joker. Though The Joker is give Harvey the illusion of having a choice.

The joker doesn't lie but he also doesn't remember like a normal person, he chooses to remember based on the situation and he makes up everything he does on the day. He was just a mastermind at think on the moment and it even seems like a plan to the norm but he just does things. He has no authority so why does he have to lie to anyone! There would be not real consequence because they have no authority over him because he can use his wit and unpredictable to get out of any situation.

I think the Joker tricking Batman by making him think he's going after Rachael, while it's actually Harvey, because it goes with what the Joker tells Harvey at the hospital, that when things don't go to plan everyone loses their minds. So he probably did that to spread more anarchy like he wants to do throughout the whole film.

Great review as usual! Another thing to point out is that one scene (one of many) that stood out to me is when Harvey wakes up in the hospital. He sees the coin and turns over to see that one side is burnt. He sees an image of Rachel and now knows that she is gone. That reminded me of Memento to an extent because, like Leonard, Harvey lost the woman he loved and all he has is the images in his head and her personal item(s). All those things do is torture him and drive him mad.

That was the one complaint for me. Every single movie where the woman dies has the woman die to develop the male protagonist/side actor's characters. This film broke many molds, except this one. Can you imagine a movie where the male character dies, developing the female lead's character?
@Kumquatodor
@Kumquatodor 10 жыл бұрын
The reason for this is the main character is male, and a good way to test him is by taking his lover. Batman's parents were killed. Uncle Ben was killed. Jason Todd was killed. The character isn't killed just because she's a women. She's killed to test the protagonist, much like other characters are.

I just stumbled upon your channel and i have to say you do a phenomenal job of breaking down and analyzing these films, bravo in response to your question about the origin of the "two face" nick name for Harvey Dent, I believe it refers to his violent angry flare ups, such as how he starts psychologically torturing the one joker goon, and then a few moments later return to the white knight he had been the rest of the film.

This is a really side tangent point to a minor event you mention, but I believe the Joker was telling Rachel the truth but lying to Gamble. The reason is that Joker reveals all the tell tale giveaways of a liar when he is talking to Gamble. Pauses before finishing, looking up and to the right as he hits his next point. When he tells Rachel what happened I think it's the truth because he looks her in the eyes the entire time and the story flows naturally out of his mouth. I know it's a nothing point, but I always wondered if it was deliberate. There's also a side bit about how he's telling both of them something that might make them empathize with the Joker. Gamble could probably understand growing up in a hell hole with a terrible parent. Rachel would probably be genuinely hurt to know the Joker suffered from the mob's brutality. This also reinforces the idea that getting vengeance on the mob might be a bonus for him, but I doubt it. I'm not certain how much of that is really in there but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't something to it.

Everyone's incredible in this, especially including new comers like Aaron Eckhart as both sides of Two-face, and of course Heath Ledger as well. He's most definitely my favorite interpretation of the Joker in anything, and very quotable! His Joker is very frightening, calculating, borderline genius, and makes lots of great points throughout the film. I really love how he switches on a dime from getting incredibly angry to seemingly completely calm again, and ahead of pretty much everyone, always. He really challenges the city as well as Batman, and it's always very entertaining to watch. As for Harvey Dent, he's a really likeable character here and when he's mutated both physically and mentally by the Joker, it's shocking what he becomes and his evolution was done believably. It's really tragic, and feels very real how he was corrupted. And just like in the first film, it's really impressive how they tied in these two villains, and the story really benefited from it. I really wish I could have given this a 10 because what it does right, it really does right, but there's just one too many plot points, and to really follow and understand everything, you have to watch this more than once. Regardless it's a fantastic movie, it's a 9/10! Sidenotes, I like that Scarecrow was included in this and the whole Batman copycat idea. The torture video where the Joker had caught one of them is really horrifying. And lastly, I do like Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel, but I still prefer Katie Holmes.

He's called Harvey Two-Face because he worked in Internal Affairs. He himself said he's investigated half the men in Gordon's unit. So the cops resent that he got to the top by prosecuting cops. This adds another layer to Dent's being pissed at Gordon for working with crooked cops.

***** It's not just the best comic book movie ever made, it's one of the best movies of the entire decade. Nolan's Dark Knight is a sprawling creme epic that touches on deeper and darker philosophical themes that most hollywood films don't dare to go near. It's among the very very very few bid budget movies that is worthy of artistic appreciation.

In the scene where joker puts Harvey's gun to his forehead and tells him to flip the coin to decide his fate, if you look closely you can see that the joker is holding down the hammer of the gun so even if Harvey pulled the trigger, the gun wouldn't go off

In regards to the Coleman Reese part, my understanding is that Fox’s intimidation worked earlier in the film and Reese only came out when he felt he had nothing to lose. He weighed his value against the Joker’s and figured Batman would be too busy dealing with one party to deal with the other. The Joker saw this on the news and was furious that someone was trying to ruin the “game” between himself and Batman, hence the hospital threat, which was likely entirely false. Much of his grander plan relies on misdirection and playing into fear. For example, the bank heist plays into the goons’ fears of being betrayed by telling them to kill whoever before they can turn on you. Yet, they never consider that everyone else could have the exact same orders or even that the organizer is among their number. It only makes sense that he added the “publicize that I’m going to blow up a random hospital” detail to his plan of “I’m going to blow up this hospital and take Dent” since he wanted to throw Batman and the GCPD for a loop, as well as make them dance like his own personal puppets.

It shows what a great film it is to have such an in depth analysis like this. The way I thought Joker switched the places up was to test if Batman was truly a hero. The Joker knew he cared for Rachel and wanted to test that so by Batman going to the area thinking he would save her but instead finding Dent, the person that was more important to Gotham. Shows that Batman is 'not a hero' but just a man in a suit and suffers the consequences of deciding not to be the selfless hero at that moment. At least that's how I saw it.

That's a great point-- Avengers really did pull that off. But what I really mean with that statement is that "superhero," even in comics, is a sub-genre. At their core, superhero stories are almost always something else *and* superhero-- Marvel stories are often science fiction, DC has a lot of fantasy (and some science fiction too), a lot of detective fiction, etc. I think a lot of movies just trying to cash in on the "superhero formula" don't have much else to them than costumes and punching.

Agreed. This was exactly how I felt. The Joker was making a point that not saving someone is killing them (incidentally many fans point this out about Batman Begins and how Batman uncharacteristically broke his rule at the end). And yes, he switched the locations to make it hurt just that much more. Mask or not, Batman revealed 1 person in the city that he cared about more than others.

Great analysis! (thumb up) THOUGHT: about Rachel's death. Why The Joker lied and switched her and Dent around? Other than chaos. My guess; a theme of expectation vs. reality. And this completely builds on everything in The Dark Knight that you thoroughly pointed out. Dent and Wayne expected that they can clean up a Sodom and Gomorrah city like Gotham, but The Joker, seeing the world as FUBAR, shows Batman (and in a way, Dent too) that he does not have a choice, whether to save Rachel or Gotham.

Great review as always! I really loved this film when it was released, and I still do to this day. By the way I'm not sure if you saw Alex Jones rant on the Nolan trilogy claiming it to be some new world order propaganda by the government. It's hilarious watching him twist things around and drawing conections that are just not there. Seeing a more accurate analysis of this work has been refreshing.

I believe the nick name two face is derived from Harvey's time in Internal affairs and hints towards a character that cop's in Gotham (a large percentage being dirty) couldn't get involved with or even talk to for fear of crooked cops being suspicious of a rat. The whole aspect of 'two-faced' is someone who seems trust worthy but will sell you out, dent needed to get familiar with these cops so he could uproot the corrupt. The coin reference is also a valid take! Great review capt!

I believe that the scene where the joker tells batman to make a choice and then switches the addresses is done for his plan. He knows batman will go after the girl, which is really switched to be Harvey. This makes sure that Harvey will be alive so that he can show Gotham that even the greatest people can have their beliefs twisted. I'm not so sure about the Harvey "Two Face" name though. Great review by the way! I watched it all and just couldn't stop listening to what you had to say!

I really enjoy all your reviews, but I think this is by far the best one. I remember watching it the day it open like at 11:00am and the theater was pretty pack. I did feel when I first watched it that it was overwhelming, but watching it again a second it, I like wow this is an amazing film. I did like Nolans jokers adaptation, its different. I do agree that when you suffer a lost like Harvey loosing Rachel, your in a vulnerable state, and you loose yourself and become a villain/monster.

Thank you very much for all your reviews. You have done a tremendous job of reviewing this film focussing on the story/theme ideas, much like I would suggest most English scholars would. With that being said one idea you didn't touch on that I would very much like to hear your opinion on is what do you think about Christian Bale as Batman/ Bruce Wayne. Furthermore, which of the actors that has portrayed Batman/Bruce Wayne do you believe has done the best job.

I remember watching this in the theater back then. 'The Dark Knight' is easily my favorite epic superhero/crime drama movie. The performances are solid, the plot is solid, the experience is solid. This is the perfect sequel that can really stand on its own. I can't call it overrated because I am looking at the message about society and moral principles. It's unfortunate that 'Rises' did not have the same effect on me because this is the movie I'll never forget: both as a fan and a moviegoer.

Something that is interesting about the scene between the Joker and Two Face in the hospital is that the Joker puts one of his fingers right in front of the cocking mechanism which if Harvey pulled the trigger would seriously harm his finger but stop the gun from firing. I don't know if this was intentional but it's pretty neat.

Did you like the visual foreshadow when Bruce is getting his arm stitched up? The short pan to show his scar was a great way of address the theme of "scars". The Joker constantly brings up his scars when he's about to kill somebody and Harvey Dent is scarred for life when Rachel is killed; not to mention the horrible scarring of half his face. I love when directors do this: addressing themes and story lines through visuals. It makes complete sense to do so because film is a visual medium.

True, and the in these films he's not yet the world's greatest detective, but we see him grow closer to a detective in the second movie. Also, to be perfectly objective, there have only been three mediums in which Batman as a detective has really been shown. First the comics, then in the DCAU (BTAS-JLU), and finally in the two Arkham games. The Nolan films are the only live action Batman films that even hint at any kinds of detective work/investigations/criminology.
