Full Comic Story and Review/Recap for Mark Millar's Superior written in 2010-2012.
Twelve-year-old Simon Pooni was a normal kid with a great life, until multiple sclerosis hit. He lost the ability to walk, went blind in one eye and sometimes could barely speak. Every night, Simon would pray his multiple sclerosis somehow would go away. "Somehow" turned out to be a magic monkey named Orman, who granted Simon one wish. And with that, Simon stood transformed into a real-life version of Superior, the legendary comic-book hero. Simon spent one glorious week saving those in need, averting natural disasters - becoming the most-beloved man on the planet. But Orman ominously cautioned Simon all would be explained in one week. Will Simon be forced to go back to life in a wheelchair after being the world's greatest hero? Faced with adversity, will he prove himself to truly be...Superior?

I feel like if ormon said he hasn’t had a pure, perfect soul in 500 years would make that whole soul thing a little more believable.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s more of a “satire” of Shazam in its story about a kid becoming a superhero after a magical wish, but it does take elements from Superman. I’m glad I discovered your channel, way better than any of the other comic book explained channels

Regarding the soul to lives conversion... The way I see it is like this; A soul is eternal. Many cultures have interpretations of reincarnation, and almost all involve the soul living on beyond the physical form. So while you can end a hundred billion lives, those souls continue on. They may live again, or they may just join the afterlife/ collective "whatever". Each one is a unique and powerful soul. By relinquishing one, a human is handing over everlasting "life".
@123r97

26:29 His wish was to be superior man. Which probably included having disasters to save people and feel like a hero. Things being wrapped up nice and easily just being part of being that character rather than actually being that easy. I think Ormon also misspeaks. Rather than saying he hasn't gained a soul in 500 years he probably meant a pure soul. He doesn't want the bullies' soul and he talks about how his kind are way too paranoid now and how a bucket of gold or a woman would have done it before. The whole conversion rate on soul to lives I feel like it might have to do with reincarnation? The soul is now gone from the cycle so it's like taking an infinite number of future lives away.

I think when he says “a human soul is worth more than 100 billion lives”, it’s because in many religions a human soul is considered eternal, and a normal human life expectancy is 76 years. So the exchange rate would be something like: 100,000,000 < ∞

In response to the whole "Supervillain Poster" thing. I remember seeing various comedies in the 80's and 90's of people wearing T-shirts of the Joker or the Cobra Logo from GI:Joe. To me, It's no different than a Star Wars fan wearing a Darth Vader T-shirt.

It's a good story overall, it's a story of doing your part and hoping for the best despite the lot given to you. The Afghanistan war is viewed from the eyes of those who didn't understand what really happened IRL during those those times so it really would appear off.

I mean I think the entire montage of him doing things to "save the world" was over simplistic, but in a book with space monkey demons I don't think realism is really the aim.

Glad you are covering this one. I think this and Starlight are my favorite Mark Millar books by a fucking long shot. I like to think of Millar’s stuff as akin to The Fast and Furious movies in the sense that they are fun books with cool ideas that are easily digestable and aren’t too high concept or deep. Starlight and Superior aren’t “deep” or “high concept” per se, but they definitely stand out as two of the most heartfelt books Millar ever wrote, and where it actually seems like he had something he wanted to say. I’d also put Reborn and Huck up there, but I don’t think they end nearly as strong as the other two.

This was so cute! I absolutely loved it! I expected Simon to not want to help Chris with his bullies cause "secret identity" and that'd lead to a fight between them, but it's so good that didn't happen and they remain freinds all the way through! :) The one thing I don't like is the amount of destruction in the final battle. That was like Man of Steel levels of buildings crumbling, a lot of people must have died unfortunately. I wouldn't really mind if Superior made more of an effort to maybe try not to cause destruction? But he just throws them into builidings and stuff that was weird. And can I just say how great it is that there were no sarcastic assholes in this story? Everybody is a kind, brave, awesome person. No Rick Sanchez, no Deadpool, no Joker. It's just a happy story.

Good work friend. I like channels that actually explore the books and not just the films. Which is funny (to me) because I've always seen Millers work as attempting to sell screenplays with illustrations. I can't say I'm a fan...But I respect his talents. Bonkers ideas and he writes douchebags like no other. I mean..He managed to make the Avengers quite unlikable even while they were saving the world. And I won't even go into his Authority run. Again though, good work.

Hey Danny, I haven’t been following your channel for a past few months or so. I remember you took a little hiatus after the whole Invincible debacle. Kirkman should cut you a check for all the publicity that you gave him and his character. Anyway I’m glad to see that you did not shut down your channel. As for the story? It kind of sucks! The only good thing about it is the penciling and the inking. I’m really not too crazy about those flat colors. The blending is almost nonexistent and the highlights are too high contrast.I’m gonna see if there’s anything else that you posted recently that I haven’t watched. Keep your head up dude!

The plot holes and predictability in the writing is a bit odd? I would love to see them turn it all upside down as a reveal for the true story? I kinda like the idea that the demon had so much trouble finding someone to sell him their soul. It makes sense if you go through step by step. He is a magical being telling people to sell him their soul. Meaning every time he tries this people basically get the confirmation that souls and demons are real so they can expect god and heaven,hell to be real too. Under those circumstances i think it would be hard to find anyone that wants to trade their soul. To put it simply what could you offer them in a mortal world that would measure up to infinity?

25:13 kids have giant posters of Darth Vader, who is notorious for being actually much worse than most of Lex Luthor or Darkseid versions, literally blew up a planet and by the time of that comic already literally killed all the children in jedi temple. Personally. And what (Lex , () since he wasn't always "Lex" before Silver Age) Luthor or Darkseid did? Kill couple thousands at best, all mostly adults, and kids only died in collateral at best. Nowhere near entire planet. Although, ultimately any unjust and evil murder is bad so in any case, kids ALREADY have posters of Darth Vader and dress like him.

If they ever do a film adaptation, I would change Ormon's scheme and motivations a bit. Let's say that demons have been making pacts with humans throughout history so they can become part of Hell's legions in preparation for Judgement Day. However, Satan has become increasingly dissatisfied with recruits. Alcoholic bums, greedy bastards, and lecherous fools ain't going to guarantee his victory against the Heavenly Host. Ormon, seeking to elevate his status, comes to Satan himself with a plan. He'll turn a desperate mortal into the most powerful sueprhero on the planet (Superior). Once their soul is his, Satan can use that heroes power as a spearhead to breach the Heavenly Gates, destory the angels, and take the throne for himself. Satan allows Ormon to carry out this plot, promising great reward for him should he succeed. However, should he fail, he'll be consigned to the lowest pit for all eternity. When Ormon does fail, Satan himself appears before them all. He has Ormon dragged off to Hell while sparing Simon and Madeline. Satan assures them neither he nor his demons shall try something like this again. The cost for such a venture outweighs any benefit Hell could reap. They'll just be sticking to low-down sinners from now on.
