Both 'Monster' and 'Infinity' are amazing songs, but I don't know, 'Infinity' hit me harder than 'Monster'... probably because of the grand, pompous, ost-worthy vibe (I saw a montage of Infinity with scenes from Spiderverse and my God, what a wonderful and perfect thing ... especially considering their partnership with Marvel). What I didn't really like on 'Monster' was the repeating motif with the synth that continued through the whole music, what made the chorus a little tiring for me after the 1st time. But I still like 'Monster' a lot. The bridge is so beautiful, bringing a contrast to the rest of the music. Anyways, 'One (Infinity + Monster)' is a masterpiece and having the possibility of see how it was done is amazing. Looking forward to see you reaction, your (half right) deductions being confirmed and specially the chat with Moonshine ♥ PS: It would be amazing if you did the same thing with the CMR staff, showing the 2 separate tracks and then the complete one :D

@@resurgingflame I agree with you on that, but on 'Monster', the synth repeat the same movement on verses and chorus, stopping only on the bridge, what became a little tiring, at least for me, and took down a little of impact that I expected to the chorus after the 1st time. In 'Infinity' we have different instrumentation on each segment, with the repeating motif appearing only on the verses and at the end, always with some sound variation , which gave more dynamics to the music on my opinion. But as I said, both are great songs :D

SuperM might be my go-to group right now, and One is probably in my top 5 all time favs, so I might be slightly biased, YET. I think One is the perfect mix between Monster and Infinity, the blend between the two works wonderfully musically and lyrically. I think mixing two songs like this is quite hard, but they managed to pic only the best from both to create one of the best songs of 2020. Hats down.

I can't listen to Monster by itself. I always expect Infinity's chorus with that great build up, then I get Monster's chorus. It just doesn't have same grandness and fun that both songs have together. Also: Thanks for explaining the terms

Same, the chorus for Monster is not very climatic. Especially since I listened to One first, the difference is very apparent which is why Monster sounds underwhelming whilst Infinity is still amazing as is.

I feel the same way. Monster's chorus is also good but I probably would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't listened to One first. I'm always expecting a bigger chorus so in comparison it feels like a let down energy wise.

I'm excited to hear what y'all think about One. I personally liked the songs better separate and think Infinity would've been better as the title track. I do like monster though - it has this early 2000's Usher-like sound to it... but somehow more modern. Actually many tracks on this album have a more classic hip hop sound that isn't super common right now and I really dig it. Shout out to "So Long" and "Drip."

I agree 100%. I do like One, but Infinity by itself is such a strong track. Monster’s bass absolutely steals the show throughout the song. With Infinity, it feels more complete as a song (if that makes sense) and it has a proper ascension; all the way to baekhyun and ten’s high note and Mark’s little rap

Infinity won't be as good as One for title track at all, esp with the MV. The verse & esp the prechorus is too choppy. One with the monster verse actually goes along seamlessly. Keeping the energy intact & not leaving the sudden lack of buildup that Infinity's prechorus has.

I’ve been waiting for your reaction since Super One was released! I’ve been listening to One more often than Monster or Infinity, so it’s very confusing to listen to the individual tracks rather than the combined version. But I like how you guys are doing the opposite. It makes it more exciting to see how the two songs were mixed together and overall gives you a more informed opinion on the mixing of the two as a final product. That being said, I really love how they mixed the two tracks to ultimately create a new track, like how they did with Sherlock being made with Clue and Note. For Monster, I really liked the pre-chorus and how it builds up, especially with Ten’s underrated vocals! But the chorus doesn’t drop as much as I expected it to. It kind of left me hanging and wanting more. For Infinity, I adore the intro. The instruments mixed with Baekhyun’s vocals and the rapping create the epicness you expect in a cinematic soundtrack. It absolutely fits the Marvel theme they’re going for and could definitely fit into a Marvel movie. And I like the chorus and how futuristic it feels. It fits what I think SuperM’s music style is: epic, futuristic, and fast-paced in a way that can be overwhelming. And I like the bridge more because again, it features Ten’s vocals in addition to Taemin and Baekhyun. If I had to choose solely between Monster and Infinity, I would choose Infinity. But I think One is a great combination of the two as it takes the best parts of the songs and mixes them in one neat package. Though it might be a bit jarring on your first listen after hearing the individual tracks first. But I can’t wait for your reaction to One! Thank you for the reaction! I think that they did a very smart and creative move by taking the best parts out fo the 2 seperate songs and made them into one track. The verses of monster are incredible, while infinity's chorus is really powerful. (Although i think infinity as wla whole is such a masterpiece) i believe the two songs where perfect for a hybrid!

I think infinity is a great song, but I think SM trying not to be so literal Avengers of kpop. Infinity is for the heroes and monster is the villains. Combined together their perfect for a movie song for Marvel.

Why they made One instead?? I feel like it's rather obvious. See, a lot of people are disappointed over Monster's chorus bcus it feels like a "let down" since the buildup is pretty big but they dropped down on the chorus. Yet people don't realize that Infinity has that one as well. Not in the chorus but in some part of the verses & especially in pre-chorus. But bcus its chorus is in climax, people don't feel much about the lack of energy buildup in parts before the chorus. This makes me sure that they intended One to completely get rid of those parts, & instead make a song that continously build up & full of energy. Which makes perfect sense bcus just like Sean said, the song has that "grand" sound they always intended for SuperM's title track.

I absolutely love both of them. Ngl when I first heard monster it was a bit underwhelming considering how its combined. But I've actually grown to love the "creeping" sound and the chorus has grown on me. Now to get to Infinity. It has been my favorite since the beginning. I FREAKING LOVE that grandiose, electric trumpet/brass synth 🎺 in Infinity ♾ (as a trumpet player, this makes me so happy) and def reminds me how iconic the French horn part was in Infinity War and kinda of a rendition to that 😍 Also I loved a lot of parts from Monster, especially that phrasing god d*mn that was beautiful, so when they both combine in ONE, full filled all the things I wanted in both songs *PS IM SO DISAPPOINTED IN MYSELF FOR NOT CATCHING THE MOONSHINE TAG IN INFINITY EITHER 😭

Based purely on a textbook understanding, I define Kpop as music released by artists of the Korean music industry which encompasses pretty much every niche case. However, Kpop is more commonly associated with concept-based music of idols in the Korean music industry. Basically, genres and sounds are highly influenced by concepts. At the end of the day though it’s up to the artist as to whether they would like to define their song as kpop.

@@Red-sv5fu I'm not a music theory expert or musician of any level so I posed the question because in more than one instances there have been references to a Kpop way to produce music and characteristics like high keys for girl group songs for example. I agree with you on the definition as it's my minimum definition too. PD from Form of Therapy defined it as more like an attitude toward work and the system that resulted, entertainment companies, trainees system, music shows, content for fans, et cetera. Personally I fully agree with that as the difference in effort and attention to detail compared to pop music is noticeable in my humble opinion. The product itself have more to it: choreographies and more complex performances, well done music videos that are not simplistic, physical albums still being relevant and that offer a true fan experience to the buyer,... This said what I'm looking for is really if there's more to it, something more nuanced that helps separate the genre, from Western pop for example, on a purely musical standpoint.

I'm in no doubt in love with monster... the slick and sly taste for their vocal choice. moonshine experiment so much rhythmically for both rapping and singing (the vibe resembled tiger inside soooo much). I like infinity too but somehow it's way too powerful for me? its grand and all but there are parts that's overly thick and it felt a bit cut-off when dropping the chorus (it's like there is no blending motion in between pre-chorus and chorus), the instrumental is very bold and the rap is very rapid too. though I said I love monster more, I agree that infinity has a bigger potential for being the title track instead.

Infinity is NCT’s Limitless 2.0. I could totally see Jaehyun starting it, a Taeil/Haechan bridge . But that one sound in the verses reminded me of a Justin Timberlake song (“You don’t have to say / what you did / I already know...”) Monster? Really SM? You couldn’t think of another name? For me personally, I love both them separated or together as One. Monster has a great verses. The lyrics and raps are bold. Infinity ofc, the best intro, chorus and pre-chorus. That's why sometimes I think that Baekhyun was right when he said that Monster and Infinity are meant to be One. Be honest all songs of this album are bops.

"Clue" and "Note" are two separate SHINee b-sides- they were combined into one, that's how their 2012 hit Sherlock (Clue + Note) came about. I feel that SuperM wanted to recreate the impact of that song, but the mash-up didn't work as well this time. With Sherlock, I think the sum of its parts is greater than each individual song, however I feel Infinity is better than One.

Maria Clue and Note each had very iconic sounds that they highlighted, making their combination really impactful. I think in this song they tried to go more for a soundscape-combination kind of situation, which I don’t know really succeeded or not.

The problem is the op was trying to compare smthing that's uncomparable & pretty much, fairly subjective. Sherlock is Shinee's song, One is superm's song. It's not supposed to be the same. The op was probably a shawol so they prefer how they did it with Sherlock. But impact-wise, One is pretty great overall.

@@resurgingflame It really was just a respectfully (imo) expressed opinion about One. I thought the connection to Sherlock was not only relevant but obvious. Rarely is the format "___+___" used because songs are not often combined like this, especially in SM. I'd think the reasoning behind doing this (as opposed to just leaving it as One and not keeping Monster or Infinity in the album) must have been at least somewhat similar for both groups. Personally, Sherlock worked better; the individual songs sounded a little too focused on their respective signature sounds, creating a nice balance when combined. But One has a weird balance between its two components and in my opinion, doesn't sound as cohesive as Sherlock did. It's nothing against SuperM or SHINee, it's just preference.

what i love about "One" is how they get the best parts in Infinity and Monster and put it in one song and make it really work.. i just hoped they kept the intro of infinity plus mark, ty, & kai's 1st verses.. Infinity could also stand as the title track but its pre chorus is kinda underwhelming.. the pre chorus in one is really fitting before its vocally centered chorus and kept the energy going plus the outro in one is much better to close an epic song.. so i still like ONE as the title track :)) it's just my own take ^_^ but this super one album is a really great album i love every bit of it & it was such a fun experience listening to the songs.. if they could also listen to the other tracks (as it is as good as the title track/s) :)

I do prefer Infinity as a whole more than Monster, BUT Monster’s bridge is SUPERIOR for me. Baekhyun’s starting portion is heavenly and then Taemin (personally my favorite vocalist in SuperM because his timbre is my favorite) takes it to a WHOLE other level. The pre-chorus of Monster is also a lot better than Infinity’s. However, Infinity takes the cake for that chorus, opening, and choral verses! But I must say Monster’s bridge is one of my favorite things SuperM has ever put out and that’s probably why Monster still gets more plays for me still? :)

Since Adrian McKinnon co-produced both songs, you could have also asked to interview him again about both songs and the process that went into the combining of Monster and Infinity to make "One". But since you've already done that for Taemin's "Never Gonna Dance Again: Act 1" album, getting Moonshine is just as great, too!

am i the only one who doesn't like the glitching/distorted sounds in infinity's pre chorus? i love the rest of the song, but this part kinda threw me off. also, i think i'm one of the few people who loves monster's chorus just as much as infinity's. i like "one" better now than the first time i listened to it, but i think they should've stayed with infinity as the title track, 'cuz listening to "one" for the first time, it does sound disconnected. the concept of a hybrid song it's cool, but when it comes to the general audience, they wouldn't previously know about the concept behind it and wouldn't try listening to it more times to get used to it or even try listening to the two songs separately.
