CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Clark (Christopher Reeve) works out with Lacy (Mariel Hemingway) and pretends to have a hard time.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Superman (Christopher Reeve) tries to save the world from nuclear destruction at the hands of Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) in this action film featuring the man of steel. In a speech to the United Nations, Superman declares he will rid the world of all nuclear weapons. Arch-villain Luthor emerges from prison obsessed with killing Superman and creates an adversary known as Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two engage in a fight to the finish in various landmarks on Earth before taking their battle into outer space. When Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) invites both Superman and Clark Kent to a double-date dinner, Superman's powers are tested so that both men can be present. Jackie Cooper plays the gruff veteran newspaper editor Perry White, with Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen. Sam Wanamaker plays tabloid tycoon David Warfield, the millionaire who buys the Daily Planet. Mariel Hemmingway is Warfield's daughter Lacy, Clark Kent's date at Lois' luxury apartment. This is the least interesting of the four Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve.

@@paulsmith9192 He likely does. In the comic's he doesn't, but in reality they can't remove skin oils and such, so in the film universes he totally does. In the film universes we've seen him sweat - it's typically not from exertion, but from nervousness. This act isn't easy to keep up all the time, also if he wants, he can engage other muscle groups. To put it another way, if you wanted to work up a sweat you could just tense extraneous muscles against restriction that isn't there. Like if you were faking lifting a dumbbell right now, and you tensed your arm, if you did it long enough you'd work up a sweat even though you aren't lifting anything - it's just engaging the muscles. Carlos has a point, he does fake issues of frailty because it's obtuse, but additionally the "act" probably takes a lot of exertion and practice over time. To put it another way, he's exercising his acting ability and if you've ever been on stage, you SWEAT.

I like the fact that Clark allowed the weights to literally lift him up because of the fact that even if he was a human he would have easily outweighed the weights and wouldnt have been literally lifted off the ground so clearly he is employing his ability to levitate for the sake of his disguise. This is something that was sorely missing from the more recent Superman movies. Clark being humble enough to actively pretend to be weak. He would let people pick on him and didnt care about his own ego. It's a quieter strength that really shows what kind of a man he is.

Yes to a degree your right. However in these movies they took it to far. This is not how Superman acts as Clark Kent. The whole point of the Clark Kent identity is to not draw attention to himself. When you watch the Donner films he does the exact opposit of that. He acts like he clumsy and a complete wimp and just all around like an idiot. This is not how he is in the comics. In comics he comes off boring and uninteresting. He blends to such a degree no one really notices him and when they do they don't stay focused on him for very long so not one has time to put two and two together. Honesty George Reeve is the only actor that nail both sides of the character down accurately. We have gotten a lot of great men who done a wonderful job of playing Superman. I think Henry Cavill would made the best Superman/Clark Kent if he had been given the chance. However he was royally screwed over on that front. I think George Reeve is the only one who nailed down both sides of the character. Don't get me wrong every actor that has stepped in to the role has done a fantastic job of bring something to the role. I love Christopher Reeve because he made Superman friendly. I like Tyler Hoechilin because he nails down Superman confidence and sense of purpose. Dean Cain did great job with playing Clark Kent. Tom Welling showed a Superman who struggled and had doubts and didn't always have all the answers. Henry Cavill gave us a Superman that had confidence and strength. All these actors exhibited some piece of the character in one way or another but none other George Reeve nailed bothsides down.

It's spot on for the Silver Age comics that this is drawing from. However, I disagree that Clark isn't humble in say, Man of Steel. He lets the guy dump the beer on him, throw a can at his head, etc. When he could pulp the guy, or just leave him in upstate Alaska or Taiwan.@@deaddudegaming

@@inceptionarts2947 unfortunately in that scene Henry doesn’t really pretend to be weak. Lois tells him to be careful with the bags but it doesn’t show him “struggle” to carry them or anything. When you portray Superman, you have to have alot of self-confidence as well as being empowered by the suit. And when you portray Clark Kent, you have to pull-off that meekness as well as little-to-no self-confidence. Christopher Reeve pulled those off extremely well.

Lacy actually liked Clark Kent and was not at all impressed with Superman, the exact opposite of Lois Lane. Lois never really loved Clark, she loved Superman. @amazinmets8439
@amazinmets8439 6 жыл бұрын
How did Lacy try to "fix" Clark? She liked him from the moment she laid eyes on him. Lois barely acknowledged Clark's existence and used him to run errands like getting her a hamburger. She treated Clark like shit! Lacy may have tried to help Clark more with his confidence but that's not trying to "fix" him. Lois thought Clark was Superman because he was never around when Superman was, and because she started to figure out the physical similarities. She never "liked" Clark. She didn't hate him, but she certainly used him. Remember when Superman asked Lois "Who's Clark, your boyfriend?" Lois said "Oh no he's nothing!" LOL that's exactly what Clark was to Lois: Nothing. Lacy NEVER felt that way about Clark. She never tried to use him the way Lois did.

Messier 11 Wrong. Lacy liked the idea of having Clark, because she was just like her father who wanted to control everyone and everything. You must've forgotten the part where Lois was looking out for Clark by telling Lacy to take it easy on him. Lacy only become a better person and stood up to her father because of Clark. Lois didn't treat him like shit, you're delusional lol.
@amazinmets8439
@amazinmets8439 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to disagree with you, but I think you're dead wrong. Lois told Lacy to take it easy on Clark because she didn't realize at first that Lacy was asking about Clark because she liked him. Yeah, by Superman 4 Lois got closer to Clark but she didn't respect or like him very much when she first met him. Lacy liked Clark instantly. Lois liked Clark, at best, as a brother. Lacy was romantically interested in Clark. Lois loved Superman, not Clark. We're talking about Clark here, not Superman. So you're saying Lacy only liked Clark because she "wanted to control him"??? LOL what a ridiculous statement. There were many others who worked at The Daily Planet, why would she want to "control" Clark? Just admit you're wrong already. Maybe YOU forgot where Lois told Clark "This girl REALLY likes you, so notice the dress". Lois HERSELF stated that Lacy "really liked" Clark. End of discussion. You lose! =)

@americanjesus8085

I think it has to be recognized, or remembered, that Christopher Reeves studied at Juilliard. He was a classically trained actor. And rather than seeing Clark/Superman as a “GD, I should be doing Shakespeare instead, what have I been reduced to?”, he made it his. And I recall reading an interview where Reeves said, to make the two aspects of Clark/Superman distinct yet united, was a lot harder than he thought out would be. It’s not just lines and attitude, it’s physical posture, the way he walks, there’s a lot of important, key subtleties that have to be nailed to make it a convincing portrayal

The way she reacts to his back is a nice window into how people viewed injuries back then. I even remember this still happening up to the end of the 90's. To be specific, I bet everyone who did sports or any physical activity remembers any time you felt pain or hurt yourself slightly. Your coach, friend, teammate would likely say something like, oh just push through it..... keep going.... no pain no gain. Its interesting to me (I use to work in a gym during the 2000's) when I saw the transition. I remember a guy doing just that on a bench press and his friends egging him on to stop complaining and push through his shoulder pain. Then a trainer with actual experience politely explain why this was actually a horrible ide and completely counter productive. Am I the only one who had experience with this kind of thinking (even just innocent version of it like lucy demonstrates above)

This is one of the reasons why ppl dont realize hes superman. Superman has an alpha attitude. Clark is nerdy, awkward and passive kind of attitude. Top that off with the fact that superman doesnt hide his face, meaning he doesnt have a "secret life" so no one will look for him.
