I’ll never understand why Nuclear Man was voiced by Gene Hackman. Mark Pillow probably could’ve just done it himself, but if he had to be dubbed then it should’ve been Christopher Reeve, since he’s suppose to be Superman’s clone.
One of the scenes that I really disliked in Superman 4 was when Lex Luthor impersonated a USAF 5 Star General to command a missile launching! Even for a fictional movie, that just doesn't work. The 5 star general rank (although still listed for use) has not been used actively since the 1950s. There has only been ONE USAF 5 star general ever in USA history, and General Henry Arnold started as US Army general before being made the commanding USAF general. Thus, the USA Armed Forces would clearly KNOW if they had a new 5 star general. And ANY nuclear missile launch still has to be cleared by the President. So Luthor impersonating a USAF 5 star general is not just unreal and impossible, it doesn't even make sense. Hence, that scene cost the movie another minus 10 points out of a 100 score.

I didn't hate it back then, as I was just happy to see a Superman movie in a theater. But after seeing it again as a teenager, I could not wrap my head around how terrible the whole thing was. Learning about how Cannon basically blew through most of their money on Masters of the Universe (an equally terrible film), it's no wonder A Quest for Peace was doomed to fail. I don't think it would have been a good movie, had the budget not been halved, but it might have had a chance of being tolerable. As is, it's a "so bad, you might chuckle a few times" kind of movie. At least Christopher Reeve was still the best Superman, even in the worst possible movie.

Still, despite its flaws I enjoyed and Nuclear Man is my all time favorite Superman villain. Sure he had a horrible weakness, but without it Supes would never have been able to beat him. And as far as I know Nuclear Man is the only live action villain to beat arguably the strongest Supes twice alone. First time nearly killing him, and he was just having fun and if it wasn't for that crystal he'd be dead. The second time, he buried Supes alive in the freaking Moon. Ok, but no Parasite, Bizarro, Metallo, Toyman, Prankster or... Brainiac? 3. No attention to detail, most evident in visuals. 4. Rehashing some stuff from the 1st 2 movies. 5. Nuclear Man lands in Metropolis to capture Lacy, Superman confronts him, but lets him start messing things up!?!? And pleads with a retread line from Superman II!??!? However, this IS the Superman movie that helped get me into the character (in my defense, the 1st 3 Superman movies were rented out from Blockbuster).

Would rather watch this than Superman 3. It's actually about Superman, Gene Hackman is back, and it's only 90 minutes. 3 is over 2 hours, and feels more like 4.

Superman IV was no cornier than Superman III. I personally love all 4 movies.

It was lots better than Superman III.

@@denizen53 Haha I like them both pretty well but to each their own. The beauty of art is that we can decide for ourselves what is canon and what is good or bad, and it's all personal. For instance, I don't consider anything Star Wars after 1983 to be legitimate and that's my personal preference.

I'm going to have to hold the phone here and say that Superman 5, if it came out as conceived could've had the chance to be the best of the series, the Salkinds would've returned to the series, and it would've featured brainac. Now if it was done correctly it could've been one of the best comebacks ever in film history.

John Travolta as superman would've been sooooooo horrible. 😅

What I find crazy is that they wanted to use the delete scenes from 4 as the basic for 5, write new scenes and a story around those. That is the epitome of cheap - these scenes are not good enough for this film but don't get rid of them, we will use them in the next one 😂 To me, this movie was always going to fail and it is just a question of did the slashed budget ruin the story or was the story so bad that even a decent budget wouldn't have saved it. I imagine there is stuff they cut because of the low budget but the story is what it is and I don't think it was going to be good even with a better budget. Sure it wouldn't have looked as cheap with proper effects and such but good icing doesn't fix and under baked cake.

Nuclear Man wasn't even really Nuclear powered. He was more like Solar Powered Man.

The sun produces energy via nuclear fusion of hydrogen atoms with other hydrogen atoms in its core, thus creating helium atoms & an incredible amount of heat.

Wish there was a directors cut with those missing scenes and enhance effects only one can hope

I actually liked this movie. And I didn't know Ron Howard did Splash - awesome. Wes Craven for this film could've been amazing.
