I find it interesting that the character of Lobo was originally created as a satire of overly violent sadistic characters in comic books, and then proceeded to become one of these very characters. To paraphrase Obi-Wan, he became the very thing he swore to satirize.

I also love how he was actually Stan Lee's favourite DC character, and it really shows how much of a chaotic, yet fun character he is. He mutilates and breaks the fourth wall just like Deadpool, and he satirises the 80's and 90s era of overly edgy/grimdark comics.

Once the Dark Age of comics ended, he was no longer a warped, hyperbolic reflection of mainstream heroes. He was a parody of a concept that kind of faded away.

That's very similar to Rorschach. He was made to parody the edgy, Paranoid, Ayn Randian characters (specifically Question) and then he became that. However he is not as entertaining as Lobo is.

Lobo’s a treasure. Being in Superman’s rogues gallery generally means you’re one of the strongest beings in the universe and Lobo’s no exception. But he’s really only interested in living fast, getting rich, and having fun. Basically Deadpool if he could bench press a planet.

You actually really hit the nail on the head on the difference between Batman and Superman. I’ll say this ad naseum ad infinitum but it’s like this: Batman reminds us of who we are as people, our limitations in our flaws and failing but persevering. He is the shadow in the night watching over and will see by god Justice is done. Superman is all we hope and dream to be, everything good and noble in humanity. We always have a chance to be more than we are if we look up… in the sky. You can guess who my hero will always be.

I remember when this show aired and saw rhe opening credits and saw Lobo and got excited about the show. I had read some of his solo series a few years prior and how he was a parody of the grim and gritty comics characters emerging in the late 80's and early 90's, particularly over a Marvel at the time

I myself am a Mexican Scottish American who was mistreated by white and Hispanic folk alike. I had the physicalisty of a Mexican, the features of one, constantly clocked and the victim of racial abuse. For Hispanic folks, I was too light skin and couldnt speak spnaish as I never got to talk to that side of the family. I felt alone. But this is Chicago on the south side, predominantly African American populated. I was raised by many families who had ancestry from here and the Caribbean [barabados and Jamaica specifically]. I learned the traditions, history, culture, and what they valued and they became a lot of my own values. They respected me, and I them, and we bonded and healed over our traumas from what we were treated as for who we were. Although they moved on and away, they told me after I moved to the suburbs and they moved back home to their respective islands, I'd always be welcome as one of them. They were my mothers, my fathers, my sisters and brothers. We looked nothing alike but they were the closest thing I had to a people, a place, a culture- a family. Right now I'm trying to learn patois to visit someday. I dont have the money since I'm going to college to become the teacher and I wont have that kind of money for quite some time. But when I do, I'll go give them a visit. Thank them for making me feel like I had somewhere to belong. Clark had the Kent's, I had the Dubois.

Loved this one. One thing BTAS doesn't do much is crossover with the rest of the DC Universe beyond Earth, but Superman naturally runs into aliens all the time. Like Guardians of the Galaxy, Lobo lives in a very raunchy, bizarre quadrant of space, designed as a parody of gritty 90s antiheroes with his only redeeming quality being that 'the Main Man's word is his bond'. Really like how Superman and Lobo's themes are dueling in part 1 as they fight but harmonize together in part 2 to symbolize them teaming up to frag that Preserver bastich.

Not enough love gets heaped on Lois/Clark as a competitive couple. So happy you picked up on it! Lois gets mocked throughout media as a quintessential damsel in distress, as if being a pillar of humanity to prevent the man of steel floating off into unrelatable godhood isn't an interesting character trait. She doesn't need to get beamed full of superpowers to be worthwhile - Superman certainly seems to like her even if she can't go toe-to-toe with villains!

Like many have written in the comments, Lobo was originally a parody of the grim & gritty violent anti-hero characters of the 90's, mostly Wolverine. In the episode Lobo said he blew up his homeworld, but in the comics he released a bunch of deadly insects that killed the entire planet (the only one who survived was his former school teacher 😜) & the reason for it is because he wanted to be the only unique one of his race. He has healing factor & can regenerate, once his blood could regenerate clones of himself. Even though he acts mostly like a villain, he does have a moral code & always sticks to his promises when it comes to bounty hunting or mercenary jobs. And he has slang words such as "fraggin", "bastitch" & "Clyde" (why, I've no idea 😜🤣)

Lobo can basically regenerate from any injury, and I believe has canonically been kicked out of the afterlife on more than one occasion If he’s split into more than once piece, he can basically create a duplicate of himself. In one alternate universe where all life in the universe was wiped out, Lobos DNA was used to basically restart the universe He was also a member of the Green Lantern corpse. For more information about the Lanterns check out the film First Flight

Lobo is one of my all-time favourite comic book characters, he is legitimacy one of the most chaotic, deplorable and funniest characters in fiction, he is even Stan Lee's favourite DC character (actual fact). Lobo is essentially a critique of the edgy, dark, punk rock era of comic books in the '80s/the '90s. He is an intergalactic bounty hunter, and when he was born he killed his mother and the doctors as a baby, and the more he grew up the more chaos he created on his home planet of Xzarnia which he did, in fact, blow up for fun. H has a healing factor and can break the fourth wall just like Deadpool. Even if you blow up his brain his cells will just reform into another Lobo clone from even the tiniest amount of blood splatter, this man is literally immortal, so immortal that he is in fact banned from the afterlife, he can't go to Heaven or Hell because of how evil he is. Lobo is an unstoppable evil and yet does nothing but be a bounty hunter, he can go toe-to-toe with the Justice League and Superman like their ragdolls. No joke Lobo's name translates to "He who devours your entrails, and thoroughly enjoys it!"

@MegMage Reacts I'm so glad that you got to this episode 🙏 🤩 Lobo appears only a few more times in the DCAU. Interesting fact, in an interview Stan Lee said that out of all the characters from DC universe the one that he actually really enjoyed was Lobo, he admits that he wished that Lobo was one of his marvel characters. Which is ironic because lobo's character was loosly based off of the comic book characters from marvel comics during the 1990s such as ghost rider, wolverine, and Deadpool. Speaking of Deadpool, Lobo also has a healing factor like Deadpool making him immortal and he has on occasion broken the 4th wall too. Also Lobo is literally the best bounty hunter in the DC universe. He is so good that he can even capture creatures and beings that don't even exist! He also always keeps his word.

YO! I am So excited when whenever you post anything, but as you can tell from my Profile, Superman is special for me. I will say, I’m not Any sort of immigrant or have gone through that much trauma or anything, but I have struggled with Depression, anxiety and a struggle to find my identity and figure out who I am in the world. Superman has always been my favourite superhero because he’s always been a force of Positivity in my life, I off course love Batman and he can really help me confront the darker sides of my soul, Superman just makes me feel warm and happy, he inspires me to be a better person and to keep going through life and figure out who I am. One of the elements i love from superman is the search and figuring out who you are. One line from the Movie Man of Steel, Speaks to me a lot and it’s when Pa Kent says to Clark , or round about says “You’re here for a reason son, and even if it takes you the rest of your life, you owe it to yourself to figure out what that reason is”

So technically Lobo can't die, plus he has a healing factor that's basically limitless. Also Lobo never goes back on his word, if he makes a promise, he will keep it. Both of my parents are immigrants to Sweden. Dad is from Chile, his family having escaped the Military Coup of 1973, and mom is from Finland, her mother moving to Sweden to work with computers. I am born here, Stockholm is my bread and butter. I have a strong appreciation of the culture and land my parents come from but Sweden is very much my home. I love the mixture of urban city life and walks through the woods and how close the countryside is if you take the right bus there. I very much agree with you, Superman is our hero but also the hero of those adopted and loved by non-biological parents. The fact that he was created by two guys whose parents were Jewish immigrants says a lot.

Oh and believe it or not compared to how Lobo is in the comics, he was made much less edgy for this show. In the comics it is said that Lobo's race was so unnaturally pure and innocent that all the greed, violence, and edgyness manifested into a single being. The edgyness of an entire plant shouild have been spread throughout the entire race evenly but somehow it all ended up in Lobo only. That said he has been an anti hero who sometimes does good deeds in the comics like he did here but he is still very dark. Case in point in the comics Lobo was OFFICALLY rejected from both Heaven and Hell so he can never die.

Lobo is an amazing character and you're right that how it seems like Superman has met his match with Lobo. He is really powerful in the comics is probably one of several characters that can stand against Superman. Also that scene with Superman taking in the scene of the "earth" was definitely awesome. Yes Clark loves Earth, not only because Earth's yellow sun is what gives him his incredible powers but because it's where he was raised by such wonderful parents in Martha and Jonathan Kent. And also cause I think he believes in the good of every living being, especially humanity. It's one of the reasons why I love Superman. Two Lobo facts Depending on continuity, Lobo had such super healing abilities, that each SINGLE DROP of his blood would actually grow a new Lobo!, thankfully he has lost that ability in most settings. Sooo, funny thing about Lobo... well, a lot of funny things. When he said that his word is law, he meant it. One very weird thing about this homicidal bounty hunter is his weirdly consistent Integrity: if he takes a job, he follows it through. If he makes a promise, he keeps it. If you pay him to protect you, he will protect you because you paid for his protection. The reason he can speak English as an alien is... well, he's in a comic story; it's for simplicity. However, he is, in fact, a super genius with comprehensive knowledge of over 100,000 languages. When he said he was the last Czarnian with such Certainty, it's because he did it. Because he hated his people for being "Boring," and because he wanted the honor of being the last of his kind. Did it as his science project; gave himself an A, he claims. The comparisons to Superman are very true, since they're about on the same power level. In fact, Nothing can really kill Lobo, not permanently. Unless you completely eradicate his physical remnants and destroy his soul. It's the reason he acts like such an asshole: because he knows there's nothing anyone can do to stop him. He does hate extreme pain though. There are two things he loves more than his free Bounty Hunting life (and that's saying something): Dolphins and his Bike. No joke, he literally tore through Hell and back to rescue dolphins. And if you scuff his ride, he will Kill you. No insurance, no money; you're just dead. He REALLY fragging loves his customized SpazFrag 666 Spacehog.

_"It's the reason he acts like such an asshole: because he knows there's nothing anyone can do to stop him."_ Arguably that's a good reason to not act like that since someone could encase you in tough material (compare Metallo and Doomsday) and no one cares to come rescue you. Which DCAU kind of shows here as it's Superman who breaks him out.

I'm watching these videos only now, so I don't know if you've gotten to Justice League yet, but out of context, there is a line where he is referred to as "Kal-El of Krypton, the immigrant from the stars, who taught us all how to be Heroes" It's a powerful sentiment, and I love it.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were both children of Jewish immigrants, and they created Superman in the late 1930s, when xenophobia and antisemitism was very much on the rise around the world. It's not a stretch at all to call Superman an immigrant story. Part of the point of Superman was to stand in contrast to alien invasion narratives that played into those fears.

Superman was created by the sons of two Jewish immigrants in 1938. The way you describe how you feel in this video is exactly the same way they felt when they created Superman. Superman may not be as "relatable" as Batman, but he is an example of the best a person can be, not because of his superpowers, but because he's Truly... Definitively... Good. Because even if he didn't have powers, he'd still be saving lives. You should check out some of the animated movies, too, like Superman VS the Elite, Superman: Red Son, All-Star Superman, and Superman Unbound! Enjoy!

He’s the closest thing DC has to Wolverine and I would argue Lobo is just overall written better (except New 52).

_"He’s the closest thing DC has to Wolverine"_ I think Timber Wolf is arguably closer.

Excuse me, but you're missing a episode before Metallo, Braniac, and Lobo ones. Feeding Time of Parasite's first appearances and such. :( But it's fine. I'm sure you'll post it up since you did with this one. Also a very good two parter one. :D So please post it when you have the chance and the rest of Superman the Animated Series. Thank you. And keep it up on it of DC Animated Universe as well.

It is a great immigrant story, since Superman was created by Jewish immigrants coming to America... I think he was intended to represent the possibilities of new beginnings!
