"Goodbye, old friend. In the end the world didn't need a "Superman". Just a brave one." I have not stopped thinking about that quote for 26 years. There's an alternate take of the ending where many of Jack Kirby's creations were in attendance at Turpin's funeral. A lovely tribute to Kirby, the King of Comics.
@dg-my9pn18 күн бұрын
This is the "alternate" ending which is actually the original ending. When this episode first aired it used this ending with Kirby's characters; when the episode was rebroadcast and released on home media the ending was changed to remove the Marvel characters. It wasn't until the series was added to Max that the original ending was added back.

In future airings and DVD releases tho, I think due to copyright, some of the Marvel characters were edited out of the funeral. And for some reason, even the tribute to Jack Kirby at the end was removed as well. However I think they were restored for more recent releases. I could be wrong.

“In the end the world didn’t need a Superman, just a brave one…” That gets me every time, for decades now. The grave in the sunset and Shirley Walker’s amazing soundtrack just perfectly bring out the emotion. This one of my favorite Superman moments in any media and in the DCAU especially.
@thedefinitionisthis26 күн бұрын
“In the end, the world didn’t really need a Superman… Just a brave one.” Watching this one as a kid, it was definitely mind-blowing to see a main supporting cast member like Turpin killed off. And seeing Superman just pound that tank in anger was heartbreaking to watch. Definitely one of the best eps of the show/DCAU, which cemented Darkseid as THE archnemesis for Superman moving forward. And yes: Maggie Sawyer is gay. 90s kids cartoon meant they couldn’t outright say it, but it was clear that Toby was her partner, which was also the case in the comics.
@milkiassamuel78026 күн бұрын
Dan Turpin's death was so unexpected and heartbreaking as he once was apprehensive of Superman but soon grew to respect him as a loyal friend and ally so seeing Darkseid incinerate him just like that was so tragic and truly shows how much of an uncaring monster Darkseid is since he embodies God of Evil and Entropy, to the point of breaking Superman as we see him breakdown full of rage, hate, remorse and guilt that Dan had to suffer for him. Dan Turpin's character in this show was also based on renowned comic book artist and writer Jack Kirby. I believe Jack Kirby passed away during the debut of this episode, so the showrunners wanted to honour him by offering their condolences to a man who did so much for the comic book industry. You can even see cameos of other characters he made show up at the funeral as very well-hidden Easter Eggs, like the Fantastic Four in civilian clothing (who are part of the Marvel Universe), someone wearing an eye patch (who's meant to be Nick Fury back when the character was white in the comics), and you even see a guy with sunglasses who are intended to be Stan Lee since he and Jack Kirby were partners at one point. They practically created Marvel Comics, and Jack soon left to work at DC Comics. although the two had a falling out, they were still friends who made the comic book industry of Marvel and DC what they are today. Jack Kirby actually created characters like Darkseid and the New Gods as they are this underrated side of DC sort of like a cosmic biblical Game of Thrones drama of these god-like beings that represent good and evil but explore a lot of nuanced and complex themes surrounding family, war, nature Vs nurture with some truly incredible, psychedelic art by Jack Kirby. The flashback of Darkseid and High Father exchanging sons is canon to the comics and while Orion is Darkseid's birth son, where as High Father's birth son is a superhero called Mister Miracle who shows up in the Justice League Unlimited show and has more complex character who grew up under the torment of Darkseids parenting and if you want to learn more about him Id highly recommend Mister Miracle by Tom King as it is one of my favourite graphic novels and a true masterpiece as one of the most complex, realistic character studies written for such an fantastical character as Mister Miracle from DC Comics diving into mental health, suicidal tendencies, and the difference of the nuances of reality and fantasy.

All I can say is: long live the king. Jack Kirby is, hands down, the greatest comic book artist of all time, and these episodes are just a treasure trove filled with his legacy. Even as a kid, I knew that he was something special, and I’m so amazed these episodes have given an entire generation someone to idolize long after his death. And yeah, Darkseid is absolutely heinous. A terrific despotic villain unlike any other, the perfect Jack Kirby creation, perfectly voiced by Michael Ironside. How crazy is the whole son exchange thing, btw? Also, Orion is voiced by DC veteran Ron Perlman. Between Orion, Clayface, and Slade (aka Deathstroke), he’s given us a wide range of vocal performances. Great reaction as always!

"In the end the world didn't need a "Superman". Just a brave one." I watched this when it originally aired, along with all the other shows in the DCAU. This is one of the quotes that I remember the most. It wasn't just the fact that this was the first major death in the story; it was the moment when you finally get to see Superman at his most vulnerable, when he couldn't save someone despite all his strength and idealism. It truly set this show apart from other cartoons at the time. And that end card is right; it's not the end. It's just time for the next chapter of a much bigger story...

To put things in perspective, Darkseid regards Orion as his favourite son. As for Highfathers son, he eventually escaped Apokolips, the only one to ever do so, and is now the hero Mr Miracle, married to a tall and powerful former Fury, Big Barda. So it kinda worked out. Minus the years of physical and psychological torture.

Orion actually looks a lot like Darkseid. His mother box is capable of 'atom weaving,' so he manipulates his own biology to look like the people of New Genesis. Remember this was a Saturday Morning cartoon and they had the bad guy off a character that was on the show from the beginning. Darkseid always has a favortism towards Orion because he slightly respects Orion has a spine unlike Kalibak he may see Orion as his enemy but its more he admires that the son he fights against isn’t a kiss ass like the son at his side. Orion unless you’re a comic book fan you wouldn’t know who he is when he shows up you know he’s at least an alien by the way he looks you’d never suspect that he was the son of someone so evil. As for his Omega Beams the lasers he shoots from his eyes Darkseid can either transport people anywhere he wishes or destroy them outright if he chooses Mannheim and Kalibak had purpose so he let them live but Turpin defied and insulted him and to break the hope of the people he had Turpin killed.

Jack "The King" Kirby is one of the seminal, most important artists in American comic book history. All those Marvel GOATS like Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic 4, Avengers, X-Men, Black Panther and so many more - he's the man who designed what they look like. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby built what Marvel is today. He also made The New Gods for DC - that's the whole pantheon from New Genesis and Apokolips. Ironically, the whole Fourth World and New Gods series flopped at launch and gained prominence and relevance later.

NEAT FACT: Jack Kirby who created the New Gods originally wanted these gods to be a reincarnation of the Norse Gods from Marvel. After Ragnarok, a New cycle would begin anew, and create the New gods, and the 9 realms, would become just Apokalypse and New Genesis. But Marvel did not want to kill of Thor. So he took his idea to DC and the rest is history. This explains Orion's red hair BTW. In Norse mythology Thor supposed to have red firey hair, not blond. so Orion is technically a reincarnation of the Proto-Indo-European God, Perkwunos(Donnor, Thor). High Father is a reincarnation of odin the All father. The Furies are a reincarnted Valkyries, Baldur became Lightray, Surtur and Loki became Darkseid, Lady Sif became Big Barda, Malekith became Desaad, Mimir became Metron, etc etc. At the time, the New Gods were very successful and influenced many creatives. George Lucas for instance took ideas from it and created some Star Wars lore: -"Darkseid" became "The Dark Side" -"The Source" became "The Force" -and the reveal that Orion was Darkseid's son is similar to the reveal that Darth Vader (literally meaning Dark Father) was Luke Sky Walker's son. Darth Vader is even burnt over his body like Darkseid.

@@Carn_Is_Done Yeah, it takes only a cursory reading between the lines to see that Ivy spent years trying (to varying degrees of temporary success) to help Harley get over her unhealthy and unrequited Joker obsession because she had a thing for (and sometimes with) her. I remember that the creators wanted the stakes to be raised because the villain is Darkseid. So they always wanted the end to be someone dies. Of course DC basically said no to all their characters. So the staff went with Turpin because they made him and DC can’t say no. It was also fitting it was for a character who had the same spirit as Jack Kirby. I think a lot of dialogue choices and his looks were supposed to be nods to Kirby? That part I’m unsure about. Basically every version of Darkseid that exists in comics, shows, and other media are basically extentions/vessals of that single Darkseid which have been imbued with like a fraction of his true power that it uses to interact with whatever multiverses that vessal exists in.

I know Meg. I figured this episode would leave you, somewhat, speechless. You are starting to see the VALUE of the SUPPORTING CAST of Superman. I could be wrong, but I believe that Kaliback was the other son in the exchange between Darkside and Highfather (just assuming).

No, it's another character. Kalibak is also Darkseid's biological son.
