Almost half (49%) of British fruit and veg farmers fear they'll go out of business within the next year - and supermarkets are a leading cause. We're on a mission to tell supermarkets: it's time to get fair about farming. You can help by watching and sharing Guy's video and tagging in the supermarkets.
Find out more, and sign our petition via getfairaboutfarming.co.uk.

I have family in farming so know how hard it is. I no longer shop in supermarkets for anything. I go directly to the farmers or organisations such as Riverford or Farmacy Co Op. Big business has no interest in anything other than their profits and their shareholders. Cut them out. We have the power to change things with just a little effort and I encourage others I meet to do likewise. Stay strong, we can live without supermarkets, we can’t live without farmers.

I buy from Riverford and never buy from supermarkets. There is a very good book called 'Not On the Label: What Really Goes into the Food on Your Plate' by Felicity Lawrence which details the abuse of the farmers by the supermarkets and the obscene adulteration of the food. I defy anyone to read it and continue to support the supermarkets. Everyone who is awake must see the relentless drive to get rid of the small farmers globally so the giant corporates can take over entirely. It is vitally important to support the small farmers.

Even when we weren’t in a position to buy from Riverford what they and Guy have stood for has made sense. His narrative and commitment has never changed in many many years.

Well said. We’re one of the last traditional 100 acre mixed farms left in Cornwall, if not the last, I’ve been subsidising it from savings for 5 years which simply cannot continue much longer before I face bankruptcy. The only way we’ve kept going this long has been through changing over to a regenerative farming system which has cut our input costs dramatically. The downside is that we can’t produce the sort of uniformly perfect and identical produce that modern bulk buyers demand and which, apparently, modern people expect to see in shops. I think that we need to demand that the government and mass retailers embark upon a widespread program of education of the buying public into the fallacy that uniformity of fruit an veg is either natural or desirable. Also, as Guy said, to force the mass food chain outlets to pay fair prices and honour their damn contracts. It’s got to be a two pronged effort, both Supermarkets and the buying public being guilty and therefore the targets for re-education. If we go under, good luck to the rest of you, a hungry population becomes a dissatisfied population very quickly.

Really interesting to hear from other farmers Rob. Sorry to hear times are so tough. Brilliant you've found a better way to do business though, and even more of a plus that it's through regenerative practices! Are you happy for us to share your comment? We're collecting a few from farmers to share.

Agendas have been planned for centuries and we’re in one where we gonna eat bugs, soylent green and some other genetic abomination. Please don’t give up and don’t give in. Our children will have no future if farming fails. God bless you all

Exactly. The politicians and royals are in on it. Old Billy G@tes wants us all eating his GMO sweetcorn and crickets and the politicians have all been made rich by taking brlbes. It’s disgusting and people are too brainwashed and have no clue what is going on and most who do know something is wrong would rather stay ignorant because they can’t cope with reality. Unless we can get people to kicking out the supermarkets and buying locally or direct from the farmers we are all screwed 😢

Well said!! It’s abysmal how supermarkets behave. That was a stark reminder of just how bad things are. Every week I have my delivery from Riverford it arrives in great condition, fresh and tastes better than anything I can buy in the supermarket. Best of all my money goes straight to the farmers. Keep going! All the best!

As you have said before, the agenda driving our food policy in the UK is all about cheap food, which of course is not cheap at all when you look at the damage a lot of it is doing to our health, our environment, our rivers, our biodiversity etc The supermarkets are part of this, as are the government who have largely ignored reports like The National Food Strategy. Our only hope is that more of us will turn away from supermarkets for a lot of our food needs and use local box schemes and companies like Riverford - which have a good set of principles and standards guiding their business values and production methods. The trouble is that "cheap" is so attractive to many and we really need wholesale policy and cultural shift.

The milk marketing board set the price supermarkets would pay & represented most milk producers, when it was disbanded by the EU & gave the power to the supermarkets to pay what they wanted. Could the growers band together to create their own marketing board to broker all the national fruit and veg at a price that worked for farmers ?

I don't think Guy said it but I assume that supermarkets, by driving payments per unit down promotes high production which indirectly encourages the intensive use of artificial fertiliser, pesticides and herbicides.

I never shop at Tesco or supermarkets anymore. This is terrible news, will always shop from Riverford, The Government and supermarkets care nothing about people, ecology or the planet, their limited vision only extends as far as their profit margins, and anything beyond that is outside of their comprehension. Such short-sighted greed will have terrible, irreversible consequences. People have the power to vote with their wallets and support their local organic farmers. Am outraged at organic farmers being forced to struggle against such unfair bureaucracy and supermarket autocracy. May you flourish! Best blessed wishes and Bravo for the invaluable work you do against such odds. You are heroes.

Signed the petition and forwarded it. Thank you for your input. I was born in Eastern Europe. I have lived in the UK for a long time and buy most of my family food from local British farmers. I observe how this government applies the conquer and divide method and tries to introduce a totalitarian system with white gloves, but there is no way it will happen! Buy from your local farmers. No matter where you live or come from, support the land you live in.

My only criticism is having worked many years doing the this job on farms,is the amount of veg that is wasted either because it doesn't look right,or the quality is only little bit not so good, some of this veg could be helped to feed less well off people! And also ger the feeling thar this veg is sold to more wealthy people,my biggest worry is how people on lower incomes can afford to pay for quality local products! That's why they shop in the supermarkets!

“Your lettuces are going on promotion, we’re going to pay you half as much”. This says it all. But not just to farming. You sign a contract with your mobile phone provider for 2 years, or get a saving account from a bank, and it is legal for them to go :”yeah, we’re increasing our fees annually in line of inflation.” “But your increase is 30% and inflation is 10%!”. “Oh yeah? Didn’t notice”. And the banks change the terms of the saving account contract several times a year to their advantage to the point that you wonder: “but is this really a CONTRACT, in which both parties have advantages and commitments? Or is this just the customer being constantly screwed everywhere, everyday, in every possible way? Lazy and corrupt law makers. 😡

I really like Riverford Organic Farm and what theyt stand for. I think Famers Markets and selling direct is the answer. I do not think British Agriculture is on its knees as such. I think the way its run and governed is on its knees. I mean how does this work. You say the super markets are offering less and less for your produce, but on the Super market shelves the costs are rising. How can they be offering you less but charging their customers more? What has happened to the super markets moral compass? I refuse to buy any product with a fake farm names on the packet. That is deceptive and dishonest. Makes me think what else on the packet is not true??? I want to know exactly where my food comes from. Bote with your pocket and choose wisely where you shop. Support honest farmers.

Guy, Surley you know whats going on by now. This isn't about profit as much as its about control. Look what has been going on in Holland over the last 2 years. They have shut 3000 farms against some of the biggest protests in europe, which by the way was never shown on the MSM. Look into the WEF and you will seen what is planned for Europe concerning farming. I could go on with example to demonstrate what is planned but you really need to look for yourself.

Climate change is another one; lie that is. Monsanto, Weather manipulation, DEFRA ... and others, all have a hand in this ludicrous reality. Everyone needs to wake up ... FAST. The alarm bells have been going off since the early 70's for me, when they introduced plastic bottles, decimalisation, synthetic fabrics and the ending of apprenticeships. Manufacturing went abroad to make things cheeper ("never mind the quality; feel the width" ... remember that mind controlling tv 'program'?). And everyone is sicker with lives that are anything but healthy or better. Yes, everyone needs to wake up; FAST.
