Supernatual worked where Velma failed. (Scoobynatural Review)

Supernatural was a hit TV series that dealt with...well, the supernatural. And they had a crossover with Scooby Doo. These two properties have vastly different tones and target audiences but they made it work and we got a fun but creepy adventure. And they were very respectful to the Scooby-Doo franchise. Unlike a certain Scooby Doo spinoff show that's supposed to be for adults. Which is pretty sad when you think about it. Velma truly deserves it's reputation.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Scoobynatural came from a place of genuine love, even when it was poking fun at certain aspects of the show. The show also had plenty of callbacks to Supernatural itself (Dean’s crush on Daphne and even the sandwich gag was a call back to a Season 7 episode), and the ending was basically a twist on the typical endings of both shows (Scooby Doo had a real ghost rather than a regular human in a costume while Supernatual had a regular human as opposed to a real monster) without making it feel like it was tacked on at the last minute.

Id like to say this would of been a perfect way to add new life to scooby doo too The gang find out the supernatural really exists, from here they could of revisited the original series with a more grown up tone with this acting like the was the pilot Taking into account that they've done multiple series even for younger kids, this would of been a way for those that are a lot older It's certainly better doing it this way than reinventing the characters we've loved for decades

I like the multiple callbacks to "Changing Channels". The most direct reference is the brothers comparing it to the time the Trickster sent them to "T.V Land". The second reference is the sandwich joke making a comeback. In the start of the episode Dean is putting the finishing touches on a comically large sandwich and says "I'm gonna need a bigger mouth".

Even though SuperNatural did get worse as the show went along. It did try to maintain the wholesomeness between Sam and Dean’s relationship. Which given that Scooby Doo is a wholesome show, it worked out well. It is like taking two good concepts and smashing it together. It would be pretty difficult to mess it up, unless you are deliberately trying to do so.

Even non-supernatural fans can enjoy Scoobynatural, it's just amazing. The gang's reactions to being told about real ghosts crack me up every time. "I thought I was blind without my glasses, but I was just blind." "We've been stopping real estate developers when we could've been hunting Dracula?" "That means there's an afterlife. Heaven. Hell. Am I going to hell?!" "We told you every freaking time! But did you ever listen to Scoob and me? No!" Even Scooby's short little "We're doomed". It's perfection.

Supernatural had a lot of love put into Scoobynatural and I think it shows. Dean was always a fan of Scooby Doo throughout the series so it wasn't out in left field. All of them using their catch phases, the sandwich eating along Shaggy and Scoob, even Dean's own love of their characters that makes him want to do everything he possibly can to not traumatize them. I loved the episode and honestly would have loved another episode of it, but I believe it was pretty expensive for them to make (but they still felt like they needed to make the episode).

In each season of Supernatural there's always a single gag episode that is meant to be a little uplifting laugh episode, they've done musicals, movie references, recognising the fans and this one and every time they manage to be both hilarious in their insults to things AND respecting the thing they're mocking. Personal favourite is the constant argument of SamxDean shipping or DeanxCas shipping that is done in episodes like this as it's always been a thing with some of the fans lol

Perhaps one of the better ways to implement a child-friendly cartoon with a more adult-oriented show. It's like a better fanfic. Some things are changed but it's also to compliment the newer characters. And it's a fun experiment trying to bounce one character's personality off of another. By that point, Fred never really had someone to "challenge" him around Daphne. Sure, Shaggy was there but he was more interested in eating food with Scoob. So, it's fun to see an "altered story" because you have personalities of Dean going against Fred's and Sam's to Velma.

If Scooby Movies was still a thing, I imagine this would have been an episode. I imagine Sam and Dean meet up with them and they think it's a demon when in reality it wasn't. I'm not big on the idea of the gang being surprised they were injured, even if it's just a cartoon, it was still believable in a sense that they could, or they panicking about ghosts being real. In the first Movie That is why they got back together and went looking for more actual ghosts and hauntings - and Shaggy almost had his lifeforce sucked out and ended up another trapped soul of the island.

Fun is important. This advice can be given to almost all modern writers. Seriously, since the politicians took control over this industry, almost every modern show, with some exceptions, takes itself way too seriously. I blame mostly Rick and Morty for this. This show, more or less, started the trend of having a more cynical view of life and the world. And sure, we had cynical shows in the past, such as Garfield and Friends, but cynicism and pessimism were never the main focus of this show. The goal still was to give you and your loved ones a nice time. But to be honest, I sadly can not see, how this will get any better. Most modern writers are single, have no children, and spend way too much time on social media, and therefore all modern stories and characters will be like them: angry, cynical, probably also self-hating individuals that can't enjoy anything more in life and have no connection to real people and the real world any more.
@erikroman1880
@erikroman1880 Жыл бұрын
Yeah i mean back than writers had family and no social media so they needed to write good stories to have food on the table and thats why shows like bluey are popular because the writer has two daughters and likes cartoons so the writer made this as something all parents would watch with their kids heck the writers of supernatural who did this crossover probably love scoby doo and so this is a love letter to the series and is much better than velma

Love the video! I appreciate this being made in response to Velma. I remember when my friend and I were talking about Velma, I made a comment how even Supernatural was able to do it better in a one off episode, when the show itself had garnered many complaints towards its writing during its later seasons. Much like Dean’s own love for the show, you can tell the writers and actors had a lot of fun doing this and clearly had an appreciation for the source material. Velma feels like it’s a writer trying to make their own shitty ideas work, but couldn’t so had to use a famous franchise to springboard off it. Scoobynatural feels like a love letter to a show people grew up with. Even the comments towards the animation are fun and not degrading, where Sam points out how the newspaper doesn’t have any real words in it and Dean says the book they’re supposed to pick is the one not painted into the background. I believe another KZbinr once said how Velma feels like it was made by someone who not just hates Scooby-Doo, but hates animation. Like they feel trapped by the medium and genre they’re in (even though y’all didn’t HAVE to make a Scooby-Doo animated series). Also, I personally love that Scoobynatural implements troupes and personality traits from modern Scooby-Doo despite the episode’s plot being from the original show. It feels like a perfect blend and tribute to the whole franchise. We acknowledge where the franchise started by going way back to the original series, but we also see where the franchise is now by seeing the characters placed in situations they often find themselves in in the modern movies and shows (Scooby and Shaggy always being the bait, Velma denying the existence of the supernatural, Fred being an oblivious but really caring guy, etc etc). As many other commenters have said, many people who didn’t watch Supernatural or fell off the show came back specifically for the crossover and it’s universally really enjoyed. I haven’t heard anyone say they didn’t like it. And I think that’s because of its wholesomeness and fun energy. Supernatural is a more mature show, but has very fun and lighthearted comedy that’s not too mature or mean spirited, which perfectly matches the tone of Scooby-Doo. Scooby-Doo is not meant to be something like Family Guy or the many other mean spirited adult cartoons that are out there, and that’s something Velma and its writers will never seem to understand.

I remember looking for it after I heard of it’s existence with other Scooby doo programs resurfacing like voodoo and Scooby probject. Thankfully the episode was recently aired that same year by 4 months ago on the cw. So I didn’t have a hard time watching it. I enjoyed how it showed heart and care for the show and how to keep there Innocence even when the danger started getting real. Vs how they act today. This was during the time Scooby apocalypse was being made and I hade to accept that even if an edge version exists it doesn’t take away from the show I love and if it can bring more fans to the show without damaging the characters reputation then welcome aboard.

I watched the first couple seasons of Supernatural years back and it was pretty decent. But I caught this one episode later on for some reason, it was pretty great. So many good little jokes and not out to be preachy or malicious.

Yeah, I really don't understand how the people at HBO thought that Velma is how they'd bring Scooby-Doo into a modern era with more "adult/mature" themes.

Supernatural is such a great show to me. The crossover was so fun. LOL When Dean was flirting with Daphne. Too funny when he was checking out Daphne's rear end. LOL. Supernatural respected Scooby Doo, unlike Velma crap show. thanks for the video.

Supernatural was more respectful to Scooby Doo than anything Cw or HBO max did for any source material they have.

Most of Supernatural is extremely dark and gritty but it has enough humor to lighten the tone. Then sometimes they have what I like to call "wacky episodes" where just about anything can happen. They can usually be watched on their own by a new viewer but have plot relevance and can't be skipped. My favorite example of this is "Changing Channels" which is even referenced in this episode.

Yes, it was infinitely better, and the part that really scares 'modern writers' is that Velma was totally straight.

I've never seen Supernatural or Scoobynatural, but I can appreciate this crossover for at least one reason: They don't treat Velma like a Meg Griffin. Ugh. Too many recent versions of Scooby Doo do that to her... Yas girl, get you that kiss scene, you deserved it~ XD
