That monologue at John’s grave had grown men on the crew crying. That’s how good Jensen is.

There is always one thing that stayed with me from this episode. In Dean's subconscious Sam gets in the car to go with him, " because you're my brother" So deep inside he feels Sam is there for him, and with all they are going through in the real world, he feels he can count on that. He might not have his mom or dad anymore, but he still has his brother. He still has a family.

The thing about this episode that breaks my heart the most is that in Dean's "dream world" the djinn still made him a borderline alcoholic who steals from his family, even though there is nothing about who he is as a person at his core that would indicate he would *ever* end up like that if he grew up in a stable home with both his parents. But in order for him to believe it was real even for a little while, he had to see himself as a "loser."

One of the best Supernatural episodes from early seasons for sure. That ending scene is heartbreaking, but actually shows how much Sam means to Dean, because he was willing to give up from that life just to have the relationship with his brother back.

This is one of my favorite episodes of season 2. Through this episode we can see how Dean thinks of himself, since it's his mind that is driving most of what happens in it, and the relationshios. It also seemed clear that it was Sam that really got Dean to leave the dream. That. And saving people.

I think there is a LOT of Dean's psychology, at this point of the show, in this episode. Djinn (at least this type) want you happy, pacified. They dig deep and find a scenario that's supposed to make you contented. One that you'll accept because you WANT to accept it. And (my theory) it's also kinda like the Matrix, in that if it is too idyllic, you'll buck against it as being fake and it won't work. And since it is coming from the dreams, imagination and ideals of the person, there are limits of what it can portray. So, it becomes interesting not only in what it gives Dean, but what it DOESN'T. I don't think his dad isn't back because he's dead, after all, his mother is dead too. I think Dad is dead (though in a different way) because Dean lived WITH his real father, for decades, and a dad that doesn't act like the dad Dean knows would feel 'fake' and throw him out of the illusion. He can't even IMAGINE his father as the 'apple pie life' Dad. Maybe John could've been if things hadn't happened, but that's not the dad he actually knew. It's easier to have dad die, though in a way that explains why they aren't hunters. Why is mom alive? Because Dean's memories of his mom are a 4 year old's memories of mom. Soft, distant, somewhat idealized. Though still with enough edge to still feel somewhat 'real'. Sam had a real girlfriend, so Sam being with Jessica is Dean's ideal. His entire world up to this point is 'Keep Sam safe, keep Sam happy'. (Not a fair thing to put on a child, when they are 4 years old,). So, Dean's ideal is Sam who got to STAY in Law school, who got to keep his girlfriend. They are distant because I think it wouldn't feel real to Dean, given the conditions Sam left for law school under, for them to be close after years apart. Even if THIS Sam had no reason to leave that way. But the things that had to stay in to feel 'real' are also things that would eat at him, being the person he is. He isn't just Sam's caregiver, he's Sam's brother and he WANTS a real family relationship with Sam. He does feel satisfaction and fulfillment from his hunting, or at least the good it does, and too much of a sense of responsibility to just let that go. Even if it has taken so much from him. A stand-in girlfriend who just fits his ideal of both 'hot' and respectable, even an idealized, but NOT real relationship with his mother just isn't enough to keep him drawn in. The things that seem to make him happy, should make him happy, can't. And that's how he breaks free.
@rockracingfan3 жыл бұрын
I love this episode. Dean's relationship with Sam is what makes him figure out it's not real. Dean's such a complex and loving character that it often gets disguised by his humour that he uses as a defense mechanism. This episode was an importat episode for Dean's character development - as you mentioned he even opened up to Sam at the end of the episode, which is a rare thing as you've seen. Speaking of writing papers on Supernatural, I did a Media and TV uni course and wrote my dissertation on representations of masculinity in Buffy and Supernatural. This episode got a lot of mentions in my dissertation!

With this show I figured pretty early on that when they give you a couple of those fun/filler episodes in a row they are either trying to give you a break after some heavy trauma/drama, or preparing you for what’s to come... most of the time it’s an emotional rollercoaster with having your heart ripped out by the end of it all... so yeah, you know, just a heads up :) they do that to you, for sure 🙈 Anyway, thank you very much for the work and respect that you put into these reactions, we appreciate it and love that you’re in this fandom, too 😻

The woman who was being held captive by the Jinn alongside Dean is played by Melanie Scrofano, star of the Syfy channel series Wynonna Earp, which I like to describe as being like Supernatural if the brothers were sisters and the monsters came to them instead of them driving all over the country to hunt them. I feel like people (me included) forget that their father was in the war, and therefore even if Mary lived, he would still have demons to fight, no matter how sweet he may have seemed in that past episode. The fact that Dean's wish still included his death, that Dean and Sam didn't talk, that everyone assumed Dean was drunk (implying he had a drinking problem) etc. I believe this still all points to Jon being an abusive father regardless. Imo. And that even with that, their life would not had just been perfect.

That irony that that perfect life dean wished for had the most critical flaw, he and Sam's damaged relationship, and the twist was that reality so full of pain, loneliness and suffering that he chose to return too, had that one perfect moment, that Sam and Dean would die fir each other. I think if a Djinn like the one in this episode crossed paths with me in real life, I'd have a much harder time busting out of the trance. This episode is like _"It's A Wonderful Life"_ except it isn't how life would have been if Dean didn't exist, but how he perhaps wanted it to be, even though his father, John, wasn't alive, he wasn't a hunter and he died of natural causes. As he said himself, it was better than the alternative and Dean had gotten to know his father in reality, but in this alternate reality, he was getting to know his mother. However, like _"It's A Wonderful Life"_ Dean got to see what a difference being a hunter made to other people's lives. The Winchesters are heroes who have saved lives, although their personal happiness was sacrificed to do so.

I'm new to Supernatural and think this may be my favourite episode so far. :) Reminds me of "Turn Left" from Doctor Who, although this came first. There's one thing I don't get though; Dean makes a point of saying that it was just one wish that was granted, "what if mom hadn't died?" So how did he end up married to a nurse, who was a model for a beer advert in the real world? Did Sam and Dean's mom talk her into the medical profession?
@katlynneb87593 жыл бұрын
I think that was to show it wasn’t real. The jinn didn’t find an alternate dimension that is what would have truly happened but used Deans own memories and thoughts to build an ideal. Dean likes the idea that he could be with a respectable nurse and likely had recently seen the beer commercial and the two things were combined in the dream world.

1 John's quest was about protection not revenge. That's what Sam assumed not what was. John left everyone in their beds then gets woke by Mary's scream. Logic says if Mary wasn't where he left her in the main bedroom she was in the nursery because Dean was big enough to come to Mary. He'd naturally assumed Sam fussed and she went to check on him and found something that made her scream in terror. That's means whoever it was was after Sam and wasn't concerned that John knew there was a intruder they just didn't want Mary describing them and was willing to resort to murder to stop her. He was protecting his kids from that intruder. Was John perfect? No. But he was a loving father trying to find the truth to protect his kids and Dean's a lot like John. The very definition of a hero. Carrying the burden, defending innocents, putting others before themselves.
