One of the best emotional whiplash episodes in TV. This also clearly shows how emotional unstable Sam actually is. It's not something we normaly see, but whitout Dean Sam is a mess. ALso for everybody who didn't see it, in his solo hunting time, Sam still ordered food for two, a burger for Dean who isn't there to eat it

the color grading in this episode is fantastic; it starts off bright and colorful and as more and more tuesdays happen and sam gets more desperate, the color and light gets dimmer and kinda muddy similar to season 1. and the fucking transitions! omg lmfao "dean?" *choking* "dean." Also, love the line "Whoever said Dean was the dysfunctional one, has clearly never seen you with a pointy object." or however it went... Because it *is* true! Sam is a lot more unstable than you'd think. He's better at masking it, because of his intense desire to be normal, but he's just as unstable as Dean, if not more so... People are often so surprised when Sam goes kinda dark or gets angry, acting like it's so awful and he can't be trusted. But Dean is always like that, he's often angry and takes pleasure in hunting. So some people get annoyed when people bring up Sam's anger, ignoring Dean's. But I think it's because of these facts. That Sam hides his most of the time, and Dean just lets it be. With Sam, it's almost like he's trying to trick you into this false sense of security, before blowing up. And with Dean, you know about the anger going in, so you know to expect it. It takes you by surprise when Sam cracks, but with Dean, it doesn't. And I think that's why people react more strongly when Sam gets angry or loses control a bit, to when Dean does. But it's also because of the fact that he has Demon Blood in him, as we learned at the end of S2. He's got this demonic thing in him, so we know that it could play a part in some things and could get out of control... (I say all this as a Sam Girl... It's actually something I love about him in a way... I have a soft spot for the sweetheart characters who have this darkness to them that they can't explain, that terrifies them...) This episode is really good though and I love it. How it's funny, but at the same time you can't help but feel so bad for Sam as he watches his brother die over and over again and he slowly loses it. Then all of a sudden, it just stops being funny when Dean dies on the Wednesday and Sam holds his body, closes his eyes, and when he opens them he's still there and Dean is still dead and he says "I'm supposed to wake up." It's like this horrible realisation to him that he'd rather watch Dean die continuously but still get to see him again and talk to him, than to lose him forever... And then he goes full on obsessive mode over the Trickster and it's so heartbreaking! Also, people correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was around the filming of this episode or one of the ones close to it that Jared was diagnosed with Depression. Or at least when he had a depressive episode and wouldn't leave his trailer so they can to call a therapist or something onto set to talk to him, they told him they thought he might be clinically depressed and production was shut down for about 5 days... @@Limpass610 Yup! And I love that about him! I love the moments where he surprises Dean because, idk, I just do... It's good to see Sam surprising people with how brutal he can be... Especially Dean because he still sees Sam as his kid brother who wouldn't hurt a fly, he's got this false image in his head about him (which is definitely a big reason for half of their issues tbh...) and so seeing him get this really surprised look on his face when Sam says or does something brutal or sadistic, there's something satisfying about it...

There are so many little touches you miss on a first and even second watch, like in the "six months" montage part, when Sam is eating, you can see he still orders food & sets a place for Dean, but it remains uneaten~~~ This episode just hits different every single time I watch it! When you have context from future episodes, you need to go back and rewatch it! It's honestly an episode that's near perfection. It's an episode, instead of crying less every, time you watch it, it makes you cry more~~~

Spoiler Warning (just in case she sees this post) There's quite a few episodes in this series that changes the way we view certain episodes on a rewatch, which is one of the many things that I love about Spn. Things that alude to future events, others that connect back another, and so on. Supernatural is definitely a show that's worthy of multiple rewatch binges!

As I see it, this is a common fandom misconception. Sam actually orders a chicken sandwich and doesn’t want the carbs, so he takes the chicken out of the bun and cuts it up on the small side plate. damn poor Sam got mentally tortured. Imagine watching your loved ones die over and over again over 100 times, and you being able to do absolutely nothing to change it. The only thing you can do is watch how many endless ways there are for them to be killed. Jesus...this episode is truly messed up, but Dean's humor makes the audience kinda forget how dark and horrifying this situation really is.

The Trickster is the best re-occuring bad guy. The actor is awesome too, he's also a great director too. This episode is so tragic yet so funny. I loved your reaction to the 'six months later' bit... Imagine how many times jensen and jared had to redo the scene when sam wakes up post-dean death. Jensen was a good sport about doing all of dean death scenes. He definitely had alot of fun doing it. Lol.

Officially, the SuperWiki (a great resource for any research about the show) puts Dean’s death toll in this episode at 106, so yes Sam probably remembered each and every one of them. Each time I watch this episode, I’m reminded of how both John and Dean have said how much like John that Sam truly is. And you can really see it in his reaction to the last death. I don’t know if you noticed, but when we see Sam eating his dinner so robotically, there is a cheeseburger sitting on the plate at the other seat. (I’ve always called it “the dead brother burger”) The obsession we see Sam exhibit is almost frightening. The details they put into the episode are amazing as well. My favorite is how the color saturation changes as the episode progresses until in the final scene with the Trickster, it’s almost completely desaturated. I mean, Supernatural has never been a bright, sunny show, but the difference between the beginning and end of the episode is a subtle but really effective reflection of Sam himself. BTW Whenever Eric Kripke (or Jensen Ackles) is asked about his favorite death of show, his answer is usually the “death by taco” bit. I love that!
