I think the mosy tragic part to this story is that this is actually the first time Cas really follows his own path. First he struggled with his sense of obedience and loyalty to Heaven despite his gut telling him that something was wrong, then he broke away from Heaven, he searched for God and felt lost when he learned that God wouldn't help them, and he largely followed the Winchesters' lead as they faced the Apocalypse. Now he opposes the authority of the last Archangel, God still won't give him a sign, and he is acting on his own. Dean tells him to just trust him and follow his lead, but Cas stands by what he thinks needs to be done. This is Cas being truly independent, using his free will, and there is this sense of doom to it. "Freedom is a length of rope - God wants you to hang yourself with it"

Fantastic episode. Misha really, really shined in this one. Plus, Jensens showcasing of the heartbreak of his best friend betraying him for a Demon instead of coming to him….❤ oh I cannot wait to see your reaction for the next one…

This is probably my favourite episode of the entire show Castiel not knowing what to do and Dean faced with another loved one refusing to listen to him as they seemingly head down a dark path... The acting is absolutely incredible, and the writing is outstanding as well. Made me truly appreciate Ben Edlund as a writer. Pretty sure he took inspiration from s5 finale, Swan Song, with this perspective change, and it was the right call, absolutely. Cas' narration gives me the same feeling as when Chuck talks about the Impala, and it's a mix of extreme warmth from thinking back to the journey and overwhelming grief from the knowledge of how it all will end Just. 10/10. The dynamics, the characters - not a thing out of place I absolutely agree, it is honestly very hard to see Crowley as an antagonist. Mark Sheppard brings such incredible charm into his performance that I am willing to justify basically anything he does, and yes, that is a problem lmao

I love your nails. Anyhow, yes, this was a fantastic episode. This was the first Castiel-centric one done to date on the show. Also very significant was we see how Crowley completely rearranged Hell, made it much more orderly, very business-like, almost like a corporation. In some ways, this was reminiscent of Wolfram and Hart on Angel, where they corporatized evil. Well, wait till you see the next two episode where everything in this season comes to a dramatic, shocking head.

This is my favorite episode of tv in general, cas is my favorite character and this episode is a masterpiece, my heart breaks for both cas and dean 😭, they're both hurt, i love them so much The hypocrisy of dean yelling at cas "we don't go around and make a deal with the devil" when dean himself worked with Crowley last season 🤦🏻‍♀️ cas has been screaming at the winchesters since the beginning of the season about how he's fighting a civil war and they didn't give a shit, they've just been all help us cas, drop everything and help us with every small issue the whole season, demanding he leaves everything and come to their aid, and now are all like why didn't you tell us!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Loved your reaction to this episode! Season 6 gets a bad rep because people compare it to seasons 4-5 (which were upheld as peak when they first aired) and lump it in with season 7 (which genuinely has a pretty shaky arc). But it's really well done in retrospect and I'd argue this episode is one of the top 5 SPN episodes overall. Giving us Cas's perspective was a stroke of genius on the writers' part and Misha KILLED it showing us this more uncertain, human side of the character. Also, I just wanted to say: even as someone who does have strong opinions on the characters and story, I love that you approach the show with an eye toward understanding the characters' motivations and seeing their perspectives rather than just picking a side. Your reactions are always so heartfelt and your discussion at the end is always thoughtful and interesting.

Well, the start of season 6, like the entire Soulless Sam/the Campbells arc was pretty bad, including the monster of the week episodes. I was just rewatching the show for the first time in a decade and was very tempted to drop it right there The second half totally floored me though, hands down some of the best episodes of the entire show

I was always 100% after Cas during this season. He did what he had to, there supposed to be also other big pluses for that kind of alliance, having Crowley which was someone predictible ruling hell, not some savage bastard or psycho. Winchesters really pissed me up not even trying to understand, like they were always so holy and didn't cooperate with evil for greater picture.

I mean they all made deals with demons at some point. Sam started the apocalypse goddammit. So I don't get why they're so stubborn towards castiel. He told them Raphael was going to start the apocalypse again and they barely avoided it the last time. Cas just needed some trust, just like he trusted them, but the boys were to selfish again, because they make the rules and everybody has to follow.

I'm kind of on Cas' side to be honest. It feels like all Dean does is make glib comments about "we'll deal with it" without actually doing anything to deal with it. Cas is actually trying to stop the apocalypse again and it feels like the others don't take it seriously. Dean's view is far too black-and-white while Cas is doing the hard thing, being caught between a rock and a hard place. Also, I appreciated Crowley saying the word "jacksie" in this episode. Even in British shows, I don't hear it very often. I think I heard it in Red Dwarf a few times but that's it. Also, I'm new to Supernatural but share your exact thoughts on season 6; the fandom talks about season 1-5 being the only good era of the show but season 6 is my favourite season so far. More Bobby, some interesting twists and turns for Castiel and less bickering between Sam and Dean. This season has a lot of my favourite episodes so far too.

Dean was right there in the garden raking leaves. Cas could have asked him for help, but he chose Crowley instead. I think this is another case of Cas meaning to do good, but making the wrong choices.

@@e.d.m3076 Dean was out of hunting at that point. Even Sam and Bobby didn't want to pull Dean out of his normal life. Plus, with Raphael being so powerful, Cas likely didn't want to risk Dean being killed and thought he stood a better chance with a powerful demon. Crowley is more disposable to Cas than Dean is.

@@e.d.m3076 Dean is quite the hypocrite when they trap him. Giving Cas shit for working with Crowley when they did it *twice* so far. And even then, at this point nothing had been ''broken'' yet. Purgatory hadn't been opened yet, all they had to do was put their differences aside and stop Raphael, which would have ended up as a suicide mission the next time they ran into him without some kind of insurance.

@@Da1337Man When Dean et al worked with Crowley the first time, it was under duress, and they did not go behind their friends backs to do it. Cas was not under duress, and he went behind his friends backs to do it. He even lied to their faces about it. That's quite a big difference.

they needed souls to open purgatory, he was already feeling betrayed that cas was working with a demon to steal souls, its not that much of a reach for sam to think he'd take his in a moment of hurt, he let it go the second cas said no which would mean even sam didn't believe it

@@Meghancita512 I get what you mean, but can see the brother's reasoning here. Because Sam was brought back soulless, he was obedient, complicit, and unquestioning on everything Samuel did. So it actually does make some sense that Cass might've done it on purpose from their pov. Plus at this point, they knew Cass had broken their trust, so it threw everything he said and did from the end of season 5 until this point into question. I don't even think they completely believed that he brought back same on purpose, and that accusing him of that was an emotional response since he had just revealed that he was behind ANOTHER one of the biggest mysteries this entire time and actively pretended he had no idea how Sam came back.

They just assumed that Cas did it out of pure malice for no good reason, which is just totally unreasonable to even consider. Cas' behavior when they trapped him was clearly that of a desperate man at the end of his rope, not an evil bastard who does horrible things just because he can.

my fav version of hell anywhere depicted. no one likes waiting in line. also this is probably my fav Castiel episode. If he had went to the boys before this and told this to them like he did here I think the outcome would have been so different because it is understandable. He is in the wrong for his plan overall but for the right reasons just like Sam in season 4.

So I'm late to your videos but I love them. And after seeing this episode again, as well as reading some comments (Man some of you are harsh) I just realized something. Cas went from a very controlling, manipulative relationship with "heaven" Got out of it and clung to Sam and Dean and the purpose of saving the world. After the apocalypse he tried to bring Sam back to repay the brothers. Raphael tried to re-enforce the abusive relationship between the angels, Which Cas recognized and refused. Crowley, another abuser, took advantage of that to manipulate Cas, who fell into another abusive relationship. I've watched this whole series a million times, but this time, honestly....I sort of relate Cas to an abuse survivor who, while trying to fight one form of abuse, fell victim to another when the stability and purpose he had during the apocalypse was no longer there. I see why The Boys reacted the way they did. I get it. I don't agree with Cas' actions or choices...but I feel bad for him. Still so new to the whole free will thing, of course he's gonna mess up. (Also before anyone replies, I just want to say this is my own opinion, based off of a lot of my own experience being in abusive environments. Other people may see it differently and that is great! That's why I love talking with fellow fans, to hear other people's takes. :D ) I love your reactions. Can't wait to keep watching them. :)

If you had actually watched the series, you would know that he was the boys' best friend. Ever since Castiel took Dean out of Hell and resurrected him, the only thing he did was follow Dean's orders and do everything to keep him safe. He is a powerful angel who decided to give up all his glory and respect in heaven just to protect and be by Sam and Dean's side. Castiel gave up EVERYTHING just to be with Sam and Dean. He is the Winchester brothers' most loyal friend, and as you probably know, he even died to save them. Before you open your mouth to say a bunch of crap, watch the series carefully and learn how to interpret it.
