The year is almost over! First I want to thank everyone for an amazing year and I’m so excited for 2019! I want to wish everyone a wonderful new year! I do have a few personal resolutions: 1) I want to improve as an artist. I want to better my skill and I want to experiment more. Not only do you guys deserve it, but I also owe it to myself. 2) I want to spend more time on the art aspect of my channel. Sometimes I only limit myself an hour to make art due to KZbin’s tough upload schedule. But I want to focus more on putting my all in art, even if it makes a video a day late. 3) of course I want to always better myself and I’ve decided to enroll in some community college classes for finance and for art just to brush up on some stuff. I love you guys so so much and I can’t wait for the 2019!! 🤠

USE THE FANCY PENCILS! You're not wasting $90 by using them-- you've ALREADY wasted $90 if they're just going to sit, unused, in a drawer.
@askialuna77175 жыл бұрын
But you can waste it, if you fill a sheet of paper with a pen because you have no colored paper and just need one, instead of buying colorful paper. Or just scrawling with such pencils as someone who has never held a pen in his hand.
@straystars24925 жыл бұрын
@@askialuna7717 The thing is, Rae does art and is pretty decent at it. She would be using them for art... not to create a piece of colored paper. Therefore, the pencils go to more waste just sitting in her drawer doing nothing. It's liking buying a $100 steak and saying, "I'm not going to use this on my dinner," and then letting the steak rot in your freezer. It's more wasteful to not use something at all then to use it for it's intended usage.

Right? I just bought my very first set of Copic Sketch Markers after being into sketching & art for my entire 28 years of life with cheap supplies. No way in hell am I letting those bad boys go to waste, I feel like I deprived myself of quality art supplies for years as it is & I don't even make money from my art. Could you imagine if LethalChris were to let all his expensive supplies sit in a drawer never seeing the light of day? I'm sure he'd still do great artwork but certainly not to the level of clean near perfection work that he does currently.

I made the mistake of wasting $15 on a set of prismacolors when I didn’t even know how to use them. Now they’re just sitting in my room, unused. Crayola may not be the best but they’re good enough to start with.

Something that you always skip that kinda gets to me is the lightfastness of the supplies you go over. Usually what makes art supplies pricey is the ability to retain its quality over many many years. The supplies you normally use and praise such as prismacolor and crayola do not retain their color and richness for very long. Only about a third of prismacolor colors retain its quality for longer than a few years and none of the crayola last longer than a year. The same applies for the paper, graphite, paints, ect. When you get more expensive supplies, not only are to getting the higher performing and more durable stuff, you also get that lightfastness. Almost all of the lumanince pencils last for over a century, and in some cases more than 2. Once again, the same applies for other mediums. So for beginners, it's perfectly fine to learn on the cheaper stuff. no one is denying you cant make good artwork on the cheap. However, if you're professional you absolutely cannot sell your customers commissions made with those supplies. The artwork will not be of the same quality as initially sold over a year or 2, which is a terrible business practice for freelancers and often hurts your brand if people are unsatisfied with the product overtime. Just food for thought to whoever wants to become professional artists
@rachelb11195 жыл бұрын
This! Also the cost of the supplies before discounts was $254, that wasn't the cost of making the drawing. She bought every one of the supplies at a significant discount I'm sure. The 20 set of Luminance pencils is $50, not $90, maybe retail of 90 but nobody pays that, lol, and the drawing didn't even eat up an entire pencil, so the cost of the materials was probably $150ish but drawing was probably more like $3 worth of supplies. Those supplies can all be used more than once.
@rachelb11195 жыл бұрын
@@sukiosartchannel3689 Light fastness for Luminance is indicated right on the pencil and according to everything I have read, not many of the Prismacolor pencils are lightfast. If you pick up a Prismacolor pencil you have no idea whether that one is actually lightfast or not. I wish I knew what your sources were because I cannot find anywhere which Prismacolor colors are supposedly lightfast. They used to have a lightfast set back in the early 2000s but it was only 48 colors. I like Prismacolors and they are fine for most of what I do but there are several other points in favor for the Caran D'ache if someone is making high end art to sell. They aren't as prone to breakage as Prismas, and the wax bloom that Prismacolors often get isn't something that the Luminance pencils do. I think the more you pay for pencils, the more diminished your returns are, however. The leap from $2 crayolas to $20 prismacolors is huge, but the quality difference between $20 prismacolors and a $50 set of luminance may not be worth it, depending on who is forking out the money.
@carolann47145 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the quality control of prismacolor, i know plenty of people get good batches or you can buy open stock to check for no warping but why should you have to if spending money on a product? Disregarding lightfastness even, you pay extra for the experience. Yes the Luminance are comparable to copics in price but they are a strong durable lead that will not break aa often as prismacolor. If uou need to purchase cheap materials well its better than no art supplies but if you're a professional then the extra cost really speaks for itself and makes the experience so much less frustrating.
@rachelb11195 жыл бұрын
@@sukiosartchannel3689 I found the lightfast chart for Prismacolor. Woot. Woot. Dick Blick has it on their website.
@rachelb11195 жыл бұрын
@@sukiosartchannel3689 One problem for me is that Prismacolor has nothing in the violet/purple range that is lightfast. I wish they would mark their pencils. Not a deal breaker, I have both as well and I am fine with Prismacolor for most applications.

I feel like, if I had Caran D'ache supplies, I'd also never use use them, because I'd be afraid I'd screw up the picture, and it would be a MASSIVE waste. If I knew I'd love every piece I ever made, it would be one thing. I got Deco markers for my stepmom for Christmas, and she LOVES them. I got them super cheap (they were at Winners. On clearance even. The 5 pack was $8 and the 3 pack was only $3!! I couldn't pass it up!! Now that I know how expensive they can get, I totally made the right call!!
@thenerdybunny12965 жыл бұрын
Same, however, as I've stated in many other comments, I'm tempted to get them because I find it funny that Carendache means pencil in Russian.

Happy New Year! I'm always glad to hear artists say that you don't need all the really expensive supplies to create good artwork :) because I love colouring and painting and I just don't have the money to buy supplies that are overly expensive. The most expensive item I have is a set of Faber Castell's Polychromos in a wooden case. I bought them used, so I paid maybe half the price. My resolution for this year, and it's only this one and probably the only one I'll ever have is to paint and draw more this year :)

The Faber Castel artist pens are my absolute favorite for line art! I use them on a daily basis because they just have really nice lines and the black is very nice and dark so. I do buy them individually though and they are a bit cheaper when doing so I think.

With something like the Caran D'Ache pencils you're paying for lightfastness. The higher price tag that comes with fancy paper and pens and ink and pencils and paints means it has higher archival quality. When an artist sells the original it won't be destroyed by light and age. You're paying for your work to last.
@thenerdybunny12965 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I just think that most people are disheveled by the steep price tag that comes with Carendache pencils. While they do look nice, personally, If I were to get professional supplies and make money off of art, I'd buy maybe 1 set of Carendaches and do the rest of my work in less expensive supplies. Like you said, the main problem is lighfastness, but, if you put a frame that uses actual glass to cover the artwork, it would slow down the effects of UV rays. While it may be somewhat expensive to buy the frame, wouldn'y you buy a frame for something you did in Carendaches? But, as someone who does art as a hobby, I'm tempted to buy the Carendaches anyways because "Carendache" or карандаш as it is spelled in Russian, literally just means pencil. Am I the only one who finds this funny?

Expensive art tools can't compensate lack of skills, but they can help to make art that lasts longer, is more pigmented and richer in color and applies better on surface. I'd say that cheap materials are great for practicing and some of them are still great for making art, but quality that more expensive materials can bring to finished art is something to consider, especially if the artworks are later on being sold.

Lightfastness. Crayola isn't formulated for superior light fastness. That is what you are paying for with the Caran D'Ache pencils. I wouldn't use then for practice, but that's what I would go for with something I was going to sell. *edited in light of different thread* Prismacolors has a good amount of lightfast colors, but their pencils still break a crap ton and have wax bloom.

Prismacolor can't do everything Caran d' Ache. I have both. 1. Prismacolor pencils are not very light fast. Most of my old drawing's with Prismacolor have faded. My old Caran d' Ache drawings look as pigmented as when I made them. 2. Prismacolor pencils have really bad wax bloom. Caran d' Ache does not. 3. Prismacolor pencil leads break all the time. Caran d' Ache does not. 4. Caran d' Ache last way longer than Prismacolor because they're more pigmented and break less.
