Alternative theory: they have always been softcores but the cores have dried/hardened over time Note: I have a set of eagle prismacolors and they are just as soft as my new ones, but they were in an old protective tin when I bought them. Maybe air exposer over time changes or impacts the cores

They are more for sure. I work in mostly vintage pencils and they seem to me to be the best of both worlds. Best of Polychromos and of Prismacolor. I thought it could be age but I like the older than Midpoint. There is a version before Eagle and that is when it was Eagle “Turquoise” Prismacolor colored pencils. Eventually it dropped out and Turquoise was meant for the graphite alone. Canada had factories as well and their versions kept up the quality much longer than US.

I get your point. The breakage has lead to many a fit in my own household. I do think they are trying to walk a fine line between being soft and to hard to layer the way we want them to. I find if I sharpen mine with a knife instead of a pencil sharpener they go farther with less breakage.

Material do get old and brittle over time. I remember those pencils being soft. Like when you have new crayola crayons their better than the old ones. They do expire at times even though they shouldn't. My american prismacolor still don't break and their butter smooth still but I keep them in a not so dry but dry area. So if your pencils came from texas or other silly hot states like California... they might be not the best reputations of what they were long ago. Just to edit and add. It's because things still have moisture in them even wax unless their are products like dry pastel that they wont loss their consistence. Wax actually have moisture and when it loses it in products it cause them to not work well but to much of it can hinder it too.

The packaging from the 90s era Prismacolor set had a stiffer cardboard box inside the thin cardboard cover with two flocked plastic pencil trays. The top folded down to prop the case up, similar to Staedtler fineliner cases. I purchased the large set in 1997, the lead is very soft. The Prismacolor Verithin colored pencils have a harder lead that is harder to blend.
@aceyriot4 жыл бұрын
excellent video! I want to let people know of some interesting additional information: The original name of the company was VERA-Bleistiftfabrik or "VERA pencil". A bleistift is generally translated as 'pencil' but this was not the generally accepted formal word for pencil in german until the turn of the 20th century. pencils as we know them were more commonly called Zeichenstift (pens) until the name bleistift was more widely adopted. It is commonly (perhaps ostensibly) considered that "Bleistift" was a term coined by the Berolzheimer family. Of note, There was a swiss physician and philologist named Conrad Gessner who lived in the 1500s, A philologist is someone who studies language...which is interesting to me since he didn't come up with the name for his invention *the pencil*. Anyway, In 1856 "Eagle Pencil" was founded in New York after Daniel Berolzheimer and his son Heinrich expanded to the United States. They made many writing instruments besides pencils so the "pencil" in the name was already somewhat limited in scope to their actual company, despite its intrinsic link to the family legacy. The Headquarters was moved to England shortly after the Death of Daniel Berolzheimer and began expanding expeditiously. When they expanded the business they partnered with other companies, diversified their products, and acquired many new brands as their own. They soon adapted many of the new techniques they learned to Eagle Pencil products and many of the classic EP products were replaced and rebranded entirely as said classic EP products instead of new EP lines in order to prevent redundancy. This is one of the many reasons why Eagle Pencil products varied so wildly in performance as each iteration was a refinement of the process of many companies coming together over these years. Eagle Pencil itself, interestingly, didn't become an acquisition of a separate company or through a purchase or buyout. I don't say this as a correction to the video as it is correct that the Eagle pencil company was absorbed in some respect to the larger company that it created. Pencils were far from the primary focus of the company so the name Eagle Pencil was no longer appropriate. Similarly the family name Berolzheimer may have felt stigmatized by Americans as some pretense to Nazis and Germany could be percieved. In 1969 the name of the entire company name was changed so that all of the acquisitions could be held under one big brand. As to why the company didn't just drop "Pencil" from the name and become simply "Eagle" it was perhaps because the words were considered to be intrinsically linked. A name that widened the scope of the company while paying tribute to the family legacy was considered the better choice. As the family name Berolzheimer was shortened to Berol, the new name of the family became the new name for the brand. hope you found that interesting :)

This is so cool! Colour pencils are a damn mystery to me so its awesome to see someone use them who actually knows about them!

I don't know about the quality, being a very new beginner, but I can tell there's a difference. I inherited almost a full set of Berol Prismacolors when my dad passed and I can tell a difference between them and modern ones.

Me: Hmm, it’s been a while since Rae made a video based around colored pencils... Rae: LETS GO BACK TO THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF PRISMA COLOR COLORED PENCILS Me: ...Alright... Can we also appreciate the mean girls reference at 6:24? I love it. Also, also, Rae if you read this, I just want you to know that you’re an inspiration. You’re not afraid to be yourself and I’ve learned so much about art from you! Please never stop being you! 😊

On the final drawing, was she just using the 30s ones and the 2019 ones, or the 30s and the 80s together and the 2019 and the 90s together, or 30s, 80s, 90s together and the 2019 one for the new?

Miss "Nancy Drew's" rudeness aside...I wondered the same thing. She didn't clarify that and it could be any of things you mentioned. I personally thought original & 80's vs 90's & now. But it could have been just the original vs now and skipped the 80's & 90's since 80's was similar to old and 90's similar to new. Anywho, doesn't really matter to me...idk why I watch these videos, I'm not an artist. Not a good one, anyway! 😄 I guess I still find it interesting and I like Rae's personality.

Sweet Insanity I’m not an artist, either, but I was curious. Haha. There’s also the fact that she said the formula most likely changed around the 90s area, so I didn’t know if she was comparing formulas, either 🤷🏻♀️

I used the 30s/80s and the modern (skipped using the 90s since they’re the same as the modern) 😎🎉

Love this video....as a 62 year old artist, I got my first set of Prismacolors around 1970...and it really breaks my heart to see how the quality of this loved art supply has plummeted. In fact, I actually still have a few of my original Prismas in my collection (I can tell because 1) they say BEROL Prismacolor 2) the color FLESH instead of the now pc LIGHT PEACH and 3) they are stubs....The fact that these older pencils are still being used and haven't shattered into a million bits, while my brand spanking new pencils shatter if I stare at them too long...tells the tale. It's also the reason why I switched to Polychromos pencils...I had that wonderful set of 48 with the self standing packaging. It was the best. .Prismacolor...I hardly knew ye.....(lol) Keep it up Rae...I've been around the art world for a long time, and your videos are some of the best!! BTW...one more thing...it's not just an uneven core, or that the pencils are a softer formula...I'm fine with that...BUT the pencils break because the pigment cores are not glued onto the surrounding wood. Because of this, whenever a pencil is dropped (either in shipping or whatever) the core shatters into a million bits and that is why you often cannot sharpen them. I have tried heating up the pencils to soften and "heal" broken cores...but unfortunately, until the makers of this wonderfully buttery soft core start gluing those puppies in place...this will never stop. And I just couldn't justify paying good money for a pencil that I used once because every time I used it, it would break, and then break in the sharpener, again, and again, and again.......on infinitum....you get the picture.

In March 2017 I purchased 132 prismacolors for $57 on Amazon. This same set of 132 prismacolors is being sold on Amazon today for $110. Amazingly right now the 150 prismacolor set is selling for $112. Lots of interesting price shifting. Your video here Rae was especially interesting for me, I've been a dilettante artist all my life, but also poor. When I get to purchase some prismacolors it's a big deal for me and I really appreciate them in my humble state. In the past I have had one or two prismacolors that would sharpen by leaving a piece of wood on the side of the sharpened tip, ( side effect of off center core ). Only thing I dislike about prismacolors is the wax blooming. Once I lightly sprayed my prismacolor artwork with a layer of "workable fixative", and, SHABANG! Lots and lots of my intricate details vanished instantly and we're lost! Also I've noticed, if you don't spray your prismacolor artwork with a sealer like workable fixative, over time the prismacolors will oxidate and form a cloudy- like transparent film over the work. Small nuisances, but overall prismacolors are Little Miracles! I loved your video Rae!!

I had a set gifted to me in the 90s (I'm thinking 1994- because that's when I created my first OCs and used them for concept art) like when I was in 5th grade (god..) and I remember them being so much better. There are pieces I have from back then (when I sure as hell didn't know how to use them LMAO) and there's NO waxbloom, and if it's there, it's not that bad. Fast forward to pieces I did in 2015, and it's all over the piece. I gave up on them and moved on to Polychromos by Faber Castell- more expensive but well worth it!!

That's actually really impressive, especially when you consider that chemicals do tend to break down / change with time! The old ones might of been just as blend-able, had they not been as old as they were. ;-)
