When I used to draw I was decent, but I stopped because I can't draw from my mind and that annoys me, I could only draw if I was looking at a picture of what I was drawing and that felt more like accurate copying not drawing

Well.. Da Vinci made the Mona Lisa and got very VERY famous for it. Guess what? He had a girl pose for him so he could paint. What about those famous fruit bowl paintings? Artists sat in front of a fruit bowl and painted it. Van Gogh painted a nice scenery picture. Guess what? He painted that from looking at his window. Using a reference isn't bad at all. Not even the best of the best can make great paintings from memory.

Chris H same but I use a combination of pictures to make my drawing my own. I might use a picture of a fish. Then I might use a different picture of a coral reef. Then I might add one of those old diver suits. And then I'll mess around with the lighting.

Half of the time, I fuck up drawing stick figures, how does one even draw the Don't side
@AVKryshtal
@AVKryshtal 7 жыл бұрын
The don't side looks like it was drawn by a 10 year old or a talented kindergartner. I seriously doubt you could draw 5x worse than that. If you did, it makes me wonder why art would be an interest to you. All the people I know who aren't interested in art, can't draw. But the ones who at least show some interest, could at least draw something fairly well. Drawing is a skill you earn, not something you're born with. If you take time to study an object or person, you'll start to notice details that you didn't before, and those little details help your drawings to look more real or just better in general. Good luck.

Hey Rae! Thanks for making these videos. I have a request/suggestion - I love the 'Do' sides of your videos and learn a lot from them, but I feel the 'don't' side is a bit of a missed opportunity to pass on more of your awesome wisdom! It would be amazing if the 'don't' side had more realistic common errors that people make, rather than just showing the huge difference between the two images. Thanks again for your videos & much love!

As a beginner artist I found the quote "draw how it seems, not as it is" on point! I remember myself trying to draw a face from an image. It turns out to look like a realistic face but usually didn't look very alike to the original picture... but then I said to myself, just draw! Always look at the picture and not try to make up anything. And it made a huge difference!

Try starting put by drawing every day, maybe even the same Object. Just do your best each time and set aside a certain amount of tjme each day to really sit down and relax while drawing. Use this for example, (don't judge but) I liked my little pony a LOT in 4th-6th grade, and I still do but not as avidly. I was so obsessed with the show that I drew ponies whenever I could and i got REALLLLY GOOD at them (cartoons. Not real ones tho) Now I'm trying to work on my humans because they absolutely suck. But I don't draw ponies as often anymore and still whenever I draw a pony it's very good because I practiced it so much. Do your best and good luck!

SuperRaeDizzle actually what most people should understand is that pointing out what not to do more than what to do leaves very little cons so there is nothing left to grasp but pros, you may not get it on the first few trys but you will involuntarily better your skills, because now you know what not to do and naturally your mind will begin to make sense of what you're trying to convey.

There's something about the way that psychopaths function which causes me to think that maybe they have a much easier time drawing still life and things like that. The factor involved is actually the absence of the natural thought processes that occur in the minds of real human beings with empathy when we look at something. We immediately and automatically begin, as you mentioned, filling in blanks and forming a conception of the thing overall, including its significance, etc. whereas the psychopath doesn't regard anything as having any innate importance besides itself, and so would seemingly be tremendously more capable without practice of just seeing things as they actually physically look and replicating that. This has also occurred to me before in terms of 3D modeling, as the significance of people and organisms otherwise seems to be lost on many who just jump into it and demonstrate no reverence for such things and people as beings of value. For this reason I think that many of the most famous and touted portrait artists of the past and present may have been and may be psychopaths or at least sociopathic, and maybe narcissism could also account for it.

I like the drawing. I was always taught that there should be no line from the pencil or, pen to make it more realistic. A object, in reality, has no lines to demarcate its existence.

a suggestion- when i was in college my drawing prof. (amazing realist artist!) emphasized finding your light source. i found that extremely helpful when drawing, especially when trying to "cast" shadows.✌💜

Note: this is not referring to race. It's referring to the literal colors black and white. Black takes all in terms of light White gives all in terms of light. The average human gives some and takes some, so we're all grey. This is Matthieu, and this was today's episode on the science of colors.

A piece of advice for shading and coloring I have (idk if you have mentioned this) is that always shade with the curve of the thing you are drawing (if that make sense). Like an apple has curved lines so color it and shade it with the curve of the object (it's a basic piece of advice but I see a lot of people coloring and shading with straight hard lines even tho the object is curved)
