Supersonic Projectiles with internal FINS? You Make it, We MACH it!

This video was filmed safely at a proper shooting range.
Many viewers have wondered if having internal fins would help stabilize a projectile. There are some rocket designs that use this principle, in fact. But will it have an effect at over Mach 1.2? Evan stepped up and sent in his design. LOTS of woulda-coulda-shoulda stuff for you to chew on here.

Any chance we could see this from a shotgun without rifling? If it's open all the way through, might it not straight-fin stabilize?

I think these slugs have more potential. If Evan would be kind enough to produce a couple more, I think reinforcing the wadding to make sure it stays separate would be a fun, interesting test to see. I don't know what you would load between the slug and wadding (maybe that shot disc thing Danny mentioned?) but I'd love to see round 2 with these "holie rollers". Great job on the video as always!

It's become pretty clear to me from watching your videos for awhile that you really need a nitro card (or 2 or 3) behind a hollow projectile if you want it to reliably separate from the wad. In this case, it might be worth seeing how you could keep the ward attached, however. Pool of hot glue, then add projectile?

can you try industrial diamonds? you need about 150 carats to make a good wax slug. they prolly way too small to be affective shot. unless you had to dispatch a mouse or snake with diamond shot. but if you know where to look you can get them at a good price. on ebay i see a 15 carot Natural Black Rough Diamond Bead necklaces for $3.25 you need about 141.7475 carats to make on ounce. so if hunt real real good you could get a diamond wax slug for around 35$. lol you can even play a jame bond song like diamonds are forever. a lil ridiculous but thats why i love you guys. ridiculous n entertaining is what you guys do best.

I dont believe that there was any appreciable air flowing through the internal "fins" . I believe they are simply a wadd-cutter style with internal features. The reason they are stable is the rifling, and the wad-cutter shape. As for the shot cup extruding into the cavities of the projectile, perhaps a buffer disk in the shot cup first then the weird slug. If the shot cup sticks as I see it doing, it will really throw off the flight. Great work. But the loads need a few adjustments and they may fly better... I cant wait for the next episode of Taofledermaus to pop up on my desk-top. By the way, What is the origin / meaning of "Taofledermaus" ????
@john-paulsilke893
@john-paulsilke893 6 жыл бұрын
Michael G I’m with Jeff in believing it’s a happy accident that the wads got stuck and created stability. In other words the slugs suck and the loading wasn’t very good but the combo was amazing, (understandable on all accounts considering the amazing happenstance that so often happens on this channel). The channel name means way of the bat, perhaps Jeff is a Batman fan or his real name is Bruce Wayne.
@fliegeesser4665
@fliegeesser4665 6 жыл бұрын
I dont believe the wads getting stuck caused stability. Just the opposite, they caused the wobble when they invoked a drag in an asymmetrical way. If they had released completely, they would all have flown true. On the several shots where they seemed to fly right and the wad appeared to be fused to the projectile, it might have been the "drafting" that kept the two parts together and not an actual connection between the two. But none the less, with a few changes to the way these things are set-up with shot cards, or other buffers and such, may make them all fly like wad cutters in a rifled barrel.. Once they are stable in a riffled barrel, it would be interesting to see how they fly in a cylinder bore... Regards Mike
@Islacrusez
@Islacrusez 6 жыл бұрын
I believe these should be fired strictly from a smoothbore, as the fins appear to be axially aligned rather than to any sort of spiral. If this is the case, imparting spin is actually counterproductive. Not that I think it would perform better, it doesn't look very aerodynamic.
@fliegeesser4665
@fliegeesser4665 6 жыл бұрын
Islacrusez A wad cutter dont look areodynamic, but they do fly straight with spin. One step at a time. Get the wads to not bind with the projectile, then try spin, or no spin.

[Caveat] I know nothing about ammunition or ballistics. I'm surprised that it worked at all - I'd have thought that it would have needed a shot card to create a gas seal, because it was hollowed out, and I'm also surprised that the rubber sleeve didn't cause any adverse effects. I thought that it might 'grip' the barrel. It just goes to show how little I know, but a lot of these slugs work counterintuitively IMHO. Very interesting design & as always a great video.
