For those of you who say throw the 4 ft tarps and roll with it. That sounds like a great idea. But you will spend more time babysitting the load trying to keep your tarps from flopping around and tearing holes in your tarps. Also the storm that Dan drove through probably would have destroyed the tarps costing Dan a rejected load and possibly it’s contract with the company that he’s leased to. It’s better to complain about the tarps than to lose everything over a professional tarp job. And Dan is just that. Professional Business owner. Thank you Dan for your hard work sir.

@@buckhorncortez unfortunately many truck drivers don’t understand their worth. A good driver is offering a special skill and professionalism that company drivers can not offer. Not many people can do this work; that’s why the U.S. has a 70k short fall of drivers. A good brokerage will always evaluate each situation and be fair. Understand as owner-op, you’re not selling transportation but professionalisms and the knowledge/skill how to move product safety in a timely manner. Tarping a load and keeping it secure was one of the hardest parts of driving flat and low trailer loads. We would occasionally pick up machines at piers that came in crates and were sealed in multiple layers of protection. These were shipped and stored uncovered, outside, but the customer insisted they be tarped, even on short trips on sunny days. I also don’t miss handling snow-covered and filled tarps! Stay safe sir.

In the UK your trailer would be unusual. We have a general rule that means that the front of the trailer must restrain the load to at least 100% of the weight imposed by the load. So if the load weighs 20 tones then it must be structurally sufficient to hold that weight, it needs a headboard. The side and rear restraints must be strong enough to hold at least 50% of the load force. I've done ropeing and sheeting, as we in the UK call it. I would've crossed the straps at the front and the rear and also roped the sheets, or tarps as you called them to prevent blowing and bulging during transport. Our trailers have rope hooks welded underneath the chock rail for this purpose. The main law governing all aspects of road haulage is called Murphy's Law, this states that if it can happen you MUST always assume that it WILL happen. Take care.

The best way to handle that is to have the other person see your point of view by asking them "how" in a variety of ways. "How can I tarp it if I'm not being compensated?" Once they see your view it makes things easier. Or they know what they're doing already and just trying to screw you over. Also down speak helps. Lower the tone and rate of your speech during the end of a sentence. Helps to calm the other person and make them more reasonable.

The conestoga option looks very good right now. Can this be added to your Dorsey Trailer Dan?

I expect that agent's pocketing the difference, Dan, may not be much money but I'll bet it adds up on every job he sets up?

That happens to me all the time. They call for 4’ tarps, and have to cover with 8’ tarps. I just put it in my paperwork, and I never have a problem getting paid for it. I’m sure glad I leased onto a company that has a little more consideration.

Don't worry about calling them out. Their name is all over the load. They will start to find it more difficult to get trucks, if they keep it up. Keep up the fair work guys, as a lawyer friend of mine liked to say, when the opposition had a poor case. Best wishes all.

In Australia, we have different Tarps, canvas with shortener ropes. Strapping over a tarp is a no, no, it cuts the tarps. We carry our own tarps, packing, actually we carry all our own gear.

I ran a flat top for a week. The last straw was rolling up a wet tarp. So I went to tippers.

I woulda just put the 4’ tarps on like the ratecon said and went on my merry way. I’m too old to put up with silliness from brokers and shippers. I have a conestoga and they tried to tell me one time that they weren’t going to pay for tarping because I didn’t have to do any work. I told them I’d strap the cover against the bulkhead if that’s what they wanted to do and they changed their tune.

Even though your load to FLA is $1.xx more than the load out of the west, won't you be hard up to get a load out of FLA worth anything? Thanks for all the great videos Dan!

A better way of securing the tarp when is that loose is using rope. An old timer taught me that when I have to tarp especially when it windy..
