In 2016, Papua New Guinea's Parliament, led by Speaker Theo Zurenuoc, was ordered by the Supreme Court to convene an extraordinary session. (Zurenuoc was the member of the ruling PNC Party under Peter O'Neill). The court's directive was to introduce a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister, a move initiated by Opposition Leader Don Polye. This unprecedented intervention by the judiciary into the legislature's affairs was seen as a breach of the separation of powers.
Despite the controversy, the Parliament complied (not complying mean contempt of court, with carries a sentence of up to 10 years), introducing the motion and adjourning for a week. However, the Parliament also sought to challenge the court's authority to mandate such breaches of the Constitution. This event marked a significant moment in PNG's political history - between the Supreme Court (Judiciary) and the Parliament (Legislature), especially the Speaker and the ruling coalition government.
The session concluded with the introduction of the no-confidence motion, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in PNG's political landscape. This event underscores the role of the judiciary in ensuring the accountability of the country's political leaders, speaker and the Parliament Private Business Committee in matters Pertaining to the VONC.
