I'm back at the beach after a few weeks visiting with family and friends in my hometown. I have noticed many people may have the wrong idea about how to approach surf fishing in our area, so I want to address how you can do it in a more effective and successful way!
Also, this is my first video with the new GoPro Hero 7 Black. It's really cool but the audio from the GoPro isn't conducive for the beach because of all the mics picking up the noise from the surf. I have ordered a mic and hope this will solve the issue, but for now I apologize for the audio issues.

You said it just right, BBB, about TARGETING particular species. That's the key to fishing in the area, whether in the surf or from the pier. I've been catching them (whiting) up to 18 inches in December, mostly on pink fishbites and shrimp pieces - same as you're doing. Hoping for weather to calm down and for the water to clear up. Keep up the good videos. They're entertaining and instructive.

Where i'm at the primary species that is easy to catch is jacksmelt. I can usually catch 20+ of them in a trip but i only keep 10 of them. I usually smoke them and i eat 1-2 and the cat and dog love to eat the rest.

I got to go to Gulf Shores a couple years ago for summer vacation. I'm from Oklahoma and had never fished in the Gulf. Bought some fish bites from the store. My buddy and me caught enough of those whiting (the size you were keeping) to fill a small ice chest every day we fished. Only problem is we didn't know what they were since we had never been there before. Looked like something you'd throw back here in Oklahoma. Lol. Last day I was there I decided to sit down and look up what they were. Once I told my buddy we had been throwing away keepers we had a good laugh about it. Haven't made it back since to catch anymore.

You couldn't be more right. I live near Dauphin Island. When I surf fish, I always bring 2 setups. One for throwing out biiig chunks of bait in hopes of a massive Drum/shark or anything that gives a fight and another setup for basic surf fishing. Just yesterday, couldn't get any hits on live croaker, cut mullet, etc. Then I hoooked into my PB black drum on a Pompano rig with a size 8 J hook on 8lb test using a piece of a FishBites the size of a penny while trying to target whiting. The fight was crazy fun on that light tackle! The surf on DI has been rough..zero whiting. I definitely gotta try the surf in Gulf Shores. Tight lines, love to support a local YT channel!

Here in Texas, I started to tie 6 hook leaders. Using a video you had up about "how to tie Pompano rigs" I took that knot and just made the tag shorter and more hooks. I use a kahle hook on the smaller side and no beads on 30 and 50# mono with mainly fishbites. Dude I literally use this rig for everything in the surf. Reds love it, Pompano love it, Black Drum love it, I've caught 5 and 6 Whiting at a time and the same with Sand Trout in the bay. It works so good I have folks stop and ask me about the rigs. I make like 100+ of these rigs sometimes and sell them as I fish on the beach. I have one video up of a drum I caught with one of these rigs. I need to invest in a body cam to get my KZbin channel going. But yeah, Love your videos buddy.

have to be clear we're talking a specific area. maybe some newbies won't get that. the North Carolina coast for instance... definitely the bread and butter fish is going to be croaker/whiting, spots and pompano with some small flounder almost all the time except for dead winter... but the fall and spring run is well known for drum and bluefish and everyone is heading out with big tackle.
@BamaBeachBum
@BamaBeachBum 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s why I was specific when I said northern Gulf Coast. Fishing in other areas are obviously completely different. But same principle applies in the overall theme of the idea in that you need to target what is present and not try to force a square peg in a round hole.

Bama Beach Bum i have to admit I was doing it wrong back when I first started out. but finally figured out (NC beaches) that most of the fish I was hoping for were feeding close to the beach on sand crabs and other delicious stuff being turned up by the waves ...and I have to show up just before sunrise. oh yeah cut the bait a lit smaller. 1/3 inch pieces of shrimp or blood worms usually caught enough for a fish fry within a couple hours. now I'm in Bali and totally confused again. love your channel and hope your sub base grows a lot in the New Year.

You nailed it Bama Beach Bum Buddy! Like I been tellin folks for years "often 95% of the fish in the surf zone weigh less than a pound. IF you target those you will likely have much more catching action. And when you do hook one of those 5% fish, it will be an epic battle!" Even 'Potlickin' the pier can be fun sometimes ;-) lol

I target whiting with 9ft surf rods, 1/0 circle hooks, sometimes J hooks and usually 3oz weight....most days where I'm at they are a little farther off the beach and more current than a 2500 setup can handle ...

Do you every use those Steelhead/Salmon rods to throw lures in the surf? I know throwing a topwater would be close to impossible but maybe a spoon, soft plastics, jerkbaits, lipless crankbaits, or bucktails? I can only get to the surf a few times a year and like to throw lures and bait. Thanks. Great videos.

zero whiting here on the west coast.. we do have corbina, YFC, and a bunch of other vermin, I wonder if this rig would work on the open surf here. definitely not where I fish deep in the reefs along the kelp, but hey.. seem like a good rig to me.. and yes, the salmon/steelhead rod is the way to go for sure..

I’m curious about corbina. I believe you have told me before they look a lot like our whiting.

@@BamaBeachBum look very similar, get to around 30 inches, fight like hell too. They are VERY line and presentation shy though, unlike a whiting, most big ones are caught by guys sight fishing with a VERY gentle cast in extremely skinny water, sometimes you will see them eating sand crabs in just an inch or two of water.. pretty amazing fish..

It’s the best chance we’ve had in the last several days. The surf conditions look more favorable and there is less of a chance of storms.

Jeez, some people are so caught up in convention. "Are you doing it wrong?" is a rhetorical question and all my beach bum man is doing - apart from catching fish - is suggesting an alternative. I chuck light gear into a gutter, too. Great fun. People need to lighten up - literally and metaphorically. Enjoyed the video, thanks.

I don't know anything about fishing, but was considered for the lead as a piece of bait in a school play. Plan to move to Mobile County round August, was thinking of learning to catch Shrimp and Mullet (I throw a small net well (Physical Therapy), just don't fish). It would be a bonus to get a few Whiting while wading for mullet. If someone could help with some questions I wouldn't be so dumb. How far out/deep do these Whiting hang out? Can't see how far you are casting on my screen. Can they be seen in the surf? Are they fast? Could they be cast netted in the surf sight throwing, like for mullet? Will they gather at a chum tube in surf? Is a 1 and 1/4" mesh to big? Any info. appreciated. Thanks.

I catch them in South Jersey surf, not as big as the ones you caught. We call them kingfish, they call them whiting in North Jersey. Great eating.

Try a sabiki rig with shrimp or cut small pieces of whiting the size of your pinkie . Surprisingly whitings hit it hard. If you’re lucky you can get a red fish.

It looked like your circle hook was on the dropper loop from outside the bight, you will have a better hook up ratio if you push the loop in from inside the bight of the hook

I enjoyed the video brother! I am curious how does an Alabama freshwater fisherman become so fluent in Surf Fishing in such a short period of time? Who has influenced you the most? I know for me I have my Uncle, Captain Bill Sims who taught me everything I know about surf fishing. We are all passed down great information and I bet there is someone out there who has helped you.

I’m still learning so much. I’ve got a long way to go. I know guys around here that are light years ahead of me. But my start was learning on KZbin. I learned basics like knot tying, gear, where to start by consuming tons of KZbin content on saltwater fishing. Then I learned by asking questions and following groups on Facebook like a hawk! Lol I spent time with a local guide Dusty Hayes to help me put some things together. Then time on the water myself. Starting a KZbin channel and being committed to post 1 video per week rapidly slingshotted my growth by being consistent on the water. I’ve always been a leap first type personality so jumping into guiding wasn’t a scary thing for me. That’s only of course continued to expand my rapid growth. So I would point to 1. The digital age 2. Time on the water 3. Consistency, more than any one person. I didn’t have anyone to show me, I just had to figure it out everywhere I could.
